| The General Synod,
General Council and United Synod of the South were cooperative bodies
consisting of member synods. Synods could join or leave these bodies
at their discretion. The General Council was formed in 1867 from a
dispute in the General Synod, so a number of their members had been
associated with the General Synod prior to 1867. The General Synod of
the Confederate States of America, predecessor of the United Synod of
the South, was created in 1863 by those General Synod member synods in
the Southern states. In addition to the synods listed above, who were
long-term members of the cooperative bodies, other synods maintained
membership in the General Synod or General Council for short periods.
The United Lutheran Church in America, followed by the Lutheran Church
in America and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, retained
the terminology and structure of the synods, but were formal church
bodies with more control over their synods. Some of the ELCA's member
synods consider themselves to be in a direct historical line from the
above synods. The dates listed above end with the creation of the LCA
in 1962, though some synods, especially those in the South, saw little
change in the mergers of 1962 and 1987. Other predecessor bodies of
the ELCA had districts or conferences that served the same
administrative purposes, but these were not separately incorporated. |
