Texas-born and has a proud heritage. You may know us by our "Randalls" and
"Flagship Randalls" stores in the Houston and Austin areas, and our
"Tom Thumb", "Flagship Tom Thumb" and "Simon David" stores
in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. We employ more than 18,000 people in Texas, each one
committed to ensuring your shopping experience at our stores is pleasant.
The trademark of every one of our stores is our commitment to
offering the highest quality products, while providing courteous and friendly service.
That commitment has guided Randalls Food Markets for more than 30 years as it grew from a
small two-store operation into a premier grocery retailer.
A look back
Founded in 1966 by Robert Onstead, Norman Frewin and R.C.
Barclay — all humble men from close families and small communities — the trio
opened two outlets the first year, another one two years later and a fourth in 1970. By
the end of the decade, the three entrepreneurs owned 15 stores and had established
themselves as key players in the market.
The ’80s was a decade of growth for the company. The
chain expanded to 42 stores with convenient locations, quality products, competitive
prices and a strong commitment to customer service and to the community. By 1991, Randalls
had passed the billion-dollar mark in sales, making it the fastest-growing company in
Houston, as well as the leader among supermarket chains in Texas.
Adding to that growth, in August 1992, Randalls purchased
Cullum Companies, a Dallas-based supermarket retailer and owner of Tom Thumb and Simon David stores in Dallas,
Fort Worth and Austin. The purchase of Cullum Companies doubled the size of Randalls Food
Markets with more than 100 stores statewide, and the company became a dominant player in
the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. A year later, the company reopened nine former AppleTree
and Tom Thumb stores in Austin under the Randalls banner, giving the company a significant
presence in the Texas Hill Country. In recent years, new store construction and
acquisitions have broadened its base of operations and strengthened the company's position
even further.
In 1999, Randalls Food Markets Inc. merged with Safeway Inc.,
making us part of a $30 billion publicly-held supermarket chain — the world's leading
grocery retailer with some 1,650 stores in the U.S. and Western Canada. Our new
relationship with Safeway brings an incredible buying power, helping us bring our
customers more high quality products at an even greater value.
Our stores
Our more than 115 combination food and pharmacy stores appeal
to a broad customer base by offering shoppers an extensive variety of products and
services, including large produce departments, in-store bakeries, delicatessens,
full-service meat and seafood departments, salad bars, banks, pharmacies, full-service
floral departments, expanded cosmetic departments, video rental departments and film
processing counters.
Many of our stores emphasize expanded food-to-go departments
with open preparation areas to create a farmer’s market atmosphere and highlight
product freshness for our customers. Flagship Randalls stores offer a wider variety of top
quality gourmet and specialty selections and an expanded array of premium services,
including expanded bakery departments, a wide range of freshly prepared foods (including
made-to-order pizza, pastas and barbecued meats), home delivery and catering.

products and a variety of specialty departments.

In-store services such as bank branches, ATMs, one-hour photo
processing, full-service pharmacy, video rental, and in some locations drive-thru pharmacy
windows, fueling stations and dry cleaning services make shopping at Randalls and Tom
Thumb truly convenient.
In addition, customer service centers in each store provide a
wide array of services, including the purchase of lottery and movie tickets, check
cashing, and payment of utility bills and car licenses.
Our selection of beef, natural poultry and pork, fresh
seafood, and local produce differentiates our stores from others. In addition, many of our
stores offer daily selections of pasta and dinner entrees, as well as made-to-order
pizzas, rotisserie chickens, quiches, hot and cold sandwiches and salads. And every store
contains a full-service floral shop with many of them staffed with a master designer.
Our wide variety of products is supplemented with our own
private-label brand items, which provide high quality at lower prices in comparison to
national name brands.
