Stolen cars, medieval thieves, and hot, flaming rocks pounding against the Earth's atmosphere...

November 16, 1998

  • One Million Cars Stolen
Take-Two said today that it has now shipped over one million copies of its crime-themed action game Grand Theft Auto to retailers around the world. The one million total spans two platforms, the PC and the PlayStation. Grand Theft Auto was originally released by BMG Interactive in December 1997; Take Two acquired BMG Interactive in March of 1998.

  • Thief Goes Gold
Speaking of crime games, Looking Glass Studios has gold-mastered Thief: The Dark Project and expects to get the game on shelves by the end of November. The game, a first-person action/adventure game set in a medieval world, differs from other genre games in that the emphasis is on stealth, pilferage and avoidance of the in-game characters, rather than out-and-out combat. Thief: The Dark Project will be published by Eidos.

  • Asteroid Hits Activision
Activision sent final versions of Asteroids to stores today. The new Asteroids is a remake of the classic arcade and Atari 2600 game, released to arcades in 1979 and to home consoles in 1981. Activision has timed the game's release with the Leonid meteor shower, an astronomical event that happens only once every thirty-three years.

  • Snowboarding Game Ships
Electronic Arts released ESPN Digital Games' X Games Pro Boarder over the weekend. The lengthily named game is a 3D action game focusing on the exploits of professional snowboarders, those terrors of the ski slopes who surf, not ski, down the mountains.

  • Acclaim Goes Down Under
Acclaim has bought an Australian distribution operation owned by Digital Leisure. The operation has been renamed Acclaim Australia PTY Ltd, and will operate as an arm of Acclaim's worldwide sales, distribution and marketing network. It will distribute all Acclaim products in Australia. International markets like Australia are a "an area of growth", according to Acclaim, and this acquisition should help boost overseas sales.
