I see a lot of people complaining about the storytelling in Japan Sinks 2020 but let me just remind y'all that culturally, there are differences in how characters respond to situations as opposed to Western storytelling- especially in this particular style of narrative which is called “Ma” or “Negative Space”- where the focus is on the characters themselves, and the events unfolding around them as they see it. That’s why other characters pass and go with no dive into their backstories. It’s unnecessary to the two main characters’ journey through this place and these events.
Not to mention, artistically, pacing was probably intended to give whiplash. The soundtrack was probably intended to be discordant to the visuals playing onscreen.
So, it’s not “bad” storytelling. It’s just not “western” storytelling. It’s not something us dumby poopoo brained foreigners are meant to understand without prior knowledge or exposure.
