Ofcom has released their latest forecast, predicting that 91-97% of the UK will be covered by gigabit-capable broadband by January 2028. 📈 This is significant for businesses and consumers alike, as faster internet speeds can drive productivity and innovation. For context, as of January 2025, 74% of UK homes are within reach of a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, up from just 3% in 2017. The gigabit-capable coverage currently stands at 86%, heavily boosted by both FTTP and Virgin Media's DOCSIS 3.1 powered network. Despite these ambitious plans, operators have revised their build plans downwards due to rising build costs, high interest rates, and strong market competition. Still, the projections indicate a promising future for the UK's digital infrastructure. 🏠 Urban Areas: Coverage to rise from 90% (2025) to 98% (2028). 🏡 Rural Areas: Coverage to rise from 58% (2025) to 89% (2028). Last week I spoke at the FS Tech Summit in Edinburgh last week, hosted by DIGIT.FYI and the inimitable Ray Bugg, about how to build a future ready infrastructure. Really impressed with the content and the people I met. Just intimate enough to have thought provoking conversations but big enough that the content was varied and interesting. Special shout out to my fellow panelists, Peter Crouch and Simon Hull. Peter's talk on how he is building innovation at Lloyds was inspiring and Simon's case study of the using AI native processes to help a customer showed the art of the possible. All in all, a brilliant day.

We posted two new roles last week to support the growth of the business, and based on some of the applications we received, I wanted to share a small piece of advice. If you’re applying for roles, it’s really worth taking the time to read the job description and screening questions. You don’t need to be a 100% match, but having some alignment with the core skills is necessary. Why’s is there so much fancy wording in telecoms? Honestly who really knows. Customers are out there being baffled by fancy wording when all they really want is fast broadband & phone systems that improves their business. Instead they get bandwidth this, latency that, symmetrical speeds, SLAs. This just leaves people frustrated and annoyed. Just tell them what it does. Well I prefer a different approach, the simple kind you can explain over a brew or a pint down the local. So, here’s goes: A Leased Line – Really fast broadband only for you. No sharing, no delay just the dogs b*****k's of the internet world. Bandwidth - How much your internet can handle - determines what works in the office. Latency - Simply how long it takes for something to start once you press go. VoIP – Fancy way of saying “your phone calls run over t’internet” SLA – How fast we deliver your solution or how quick we can fix an issue. Cloud – Not the ones that bring the rain. Just a fancy way of saying a big computer somewhere else that keeps your stuff safe. Firewall – Your internet’s bouncer. If it doesn't belong its not coming in. At the end of the day your not bothered about fancy words. You just want things that work for you. Fast internet. Reliable phones and someone to pick up the phone if you need support.
