Anna Bateson shared thisIt is great to see the SPUR telemetry standards being used for the first time by AskNews. These common standards for measuring and reporting allow the Guardian to understand the value our work brings within the AI environment and take decisions on where to focus our energy and resources. Thank you !Anna Bateson shared thisAskNews is delighted to welcome The Guardian to our publisher programme! Research and high-stakes decision platforms rely on high quality source material from publishers like The Guardian. Meanwhile, publishers deserve a clear view of how their journalism is being used and the value that is being extracted. This is precisely the relationship AskNews aims to foster. This agreement wasn't one of our typical licensing engagements. The Guardian helped shape important technical and contractual decisions that other publishers in our corpus will benefit from for years to come. The SPUR Coalition telemetry component is central to tracing how reporting is used inside AskNews, from retrieval to grounding and citation. Our publisher dashboard and API make that activity visible to the publishers behind the journalism. A warm welcome to The Guardian 🤗 A special thanks to the very thoughtful, forward looking individuals, who saw this through to completion including Carlos Rodriguez, Ross Paterson, and Robert Hahn from The Guardian's side, and Wagner Costa Santos, Elin Törnquist, and Robert Caulk from the AskNews side for implementation of technical SPUR requirements.

Anna Bateson shared thisIt was a treat to join Brian Morrissey at The Rebooting Audience Summit last week to discuss The Guardian's goals for the next 5 years: grow our audience, deepen engagement and support, deliver even more journalistic impact, and further capitalise on our success outside the UK. Anna Bateson shared thisWe have just published the Guardian Media Group’s annual review for 2025/26 while this year we have continued to make strong progress against our strategy, continuing to grow our digital reader revenues and our international revenues and reach. Of particular note is the fact that last year total revenues increased to £282m - the highest ever for the Guardian's news operations - and 41% of overall revenue is now generated outside the UK. It is an incredible reflection of the huge amount of work and effort of Guardian colleagues around the world who deserve huge thanks. We are intentionally making further investments to maximise the impact of Guardian journalism around the world and ensuring our business remains financially sustainable for the long term.

Anna Bateson shared this“The tragic death of Jason Arday raises serious questions about race, institutional authority and what happens to people in a society increasingly organised around public reputation. Arday, who resigned earlier this month as a professor at the University of Cambridge, was found dead at his home last week. He was 41. His family and friends have lost somebody they loved and cared for. Arday had publicly said that the scrutiny of allegations concerning his academic work and claims he had made about his life was taking a profound toll. That he then died amid an intense and continuing media examination of his life is deeply troubling. [...] “The Guardian sought to establish what was true. That is the proper function of journalism. Reporters were contacted by Arday over a year ago and worked extensively to verify what he had told them. In many instances they could not. It was right for the Guardian to publish its investigation, and it is wrong that the journalists who did their job responsibly are now being subjected to an onslaught of abuse. Cambridge, which has many of its own questions to answer, announced that it would hold an internal inquiry. In its journalism, the Guardian sought to meet tests of importance and proportionality, covering the issue with nuance. This could not be said of much of the rightwing media and its social media outriders.” https://lnkd.in/e3R4M39vThe Guardian view on Jason Arday: a tragedy that demands reflection | EditorialThe Guardian view on Jason Arday: a tragedy that demands reflection | Editorial

Anna Bateson shared thisOur editor-in-chief on the Guardian's history in Manchester, and why being rooted matters so much to us. As she says to be of many somewheres, even as the Guardian has become one of the world's largest news organisations in the world.Anna Bateson shared thisThe new UK prime minister Andy Burnham is making the devolution of power away from London central to his programme — and he's also made a permanent PM base in Manchester, at No 10 North. It has made me reflect on the Guardian’s own deep roots in the city. When I became editor-in-chief 11 years ago, the Guardian had just one permanent reporter based in our Manchester office. I felt we weren’t connected well enough to the city in which we were founded, and indeed to the rest of the north, or the UK, so one of my first decisions was to expand the team. We now have six reporters based in our office in Manchester, and several other journalists too. A couple of years later I set out to explain the Guardian’s purpose in the 21st century, in an essay called A mission for journalism in a time of crisis. I started that essay by exploring the Peterloo massacre in 1819, a tragedy that is a vital part of Manchester’s radical history, and played an important role in the foundation of the Manchester Guardian. I also explained the principles of the Guardian’s longest-serving editor, CP Scott, who in 1921 set out a set of values we still abide by today: “honesty, cleanness [meaning integrity], courage, fairness, a sense of duty to the reader and a sense of duty to the community.” Part of Andy Burnham’s appeal appears to me to be the idea that politicians have to stay much more connected with their communities, what some call the “politics of place”. I care about this very much, and it's an idea that underpins Guardian journalism too. The Guardian is now one of the world’s largest English-language news sources, and having journalistic impact across the world is an important part of our strategy. Our job as we get more global is to connect our international audience together: not by flattening the world out and presenting the bland view from nowhere, but by illuminating many somewheres. The urgent issues and crises the world faces have little regard for the differences between our cities, towns and counties, or indeed for national borders. They affect us all. In recent years, as well as increasing the size of our Manchester office, we have also hired many more reporters based around the UK, outside of London, including our first Wales and Midlands correspondents for decades, a correspondent in West Yorkshire, and our first-ever North-East correspondent. At the same time, we have increased our reporting teams across Europe, North America and Australia, and hired new reporters in Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean. Being on the ground matters. Many somewheres. As I said in a lecture on journalism and technology earlier this year: we are global. But, at the same time, we have roots. You have to be rooted to rise. Although the 'Manchester' part of our name was dropped in 1959, I have this old sign on the wall in my London office as a reminder of those roots.

Anna Bateson posted thisThis is a great piece from my brilliant colleague Imogen Fox about the unique opportunity trusted news publishers like the Guardian offer advertisers around global events like the World Cup. The fact is these moments are about more than just the match or event itself: there is an abundance of news happening around them which people want to know about. That is why the Guardian not only delivered our biggest, most global World Cup coverage ever, but also our most successful from a commercial perspective. Whether it is the millions of readers from almost every country in the world who followed our renowned live-blogs, the 28% growth in the Soccer with Jonathan Wilson newsletter, or the more than 100m combined views of our reporting across Instagram, TikTok & YouTube, it is clear that audiences value our offering. And its important to call out the huge success of the Football Weekly team, who transformed into the World Cup Daily and broke into US sport podcast charts for the first time. As a further signal of popularity, Football Weekly’s subreddit has been a break out success with 15,000 weekly visitors — a self-sustaining fan community who dissect every moment, including Barry Glendenning’s socks-on pool dive on TikTok. Our belief in covering the whole picture means we brought our audience the surprising details you can’t plan for around the matches, on-the-ground analysis, and the reporting the Guardian is so well known for.
