Australia lost an estimated $87.39 billion to money laundering in 2024-2025, according to the Napier AI / AML Index. AI could help recover some of that, but only if it's used properly. In his latest blog, Jeffrey Jones, Strategic Product SME, looks at why detection is struggling to keep pace with AI-enabled crime such as smurfing, synthetic identity fraud, and stablecoin layering, and why bolting AI onto legacy AML systems won't close the gap. He sets out what responsible AI in AML actually looks like: risk-based assessment, human-in-the-loop decision-making, and continuous validation, and why AUSTRAC's expanding obligations make getting this right more urgent than ever. In FinanceX, Sean Murphy speaks with Dr Janet Bastiman, Chief Data Scientist at Napier AI, about how a method borrowed from environmental science is reshaping anti-money laundering detection. Dr Bastiman describes how equations used to trace river pollution can be adapted to trace laundered funds moving through the financial system. Key takeaways: · Banks rarely see where illicit money enters the system, only the disturbance it leaves as it flows through connected accounts · The method watches networks rather than individual accounts, spotting laundering as changes in the amplitude and frequency of transaction patterns · An AI risk layer surfaces coherent patterns worth investigating, cutting the false positives that overwhelm compliance teams · Refined in the FCA Supercharged Sandbox as Project Theseus, the technique reached market in March 2026 as Insights AI Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/edYQ-RdE #FinanceX #AML #RegTech #Fintech #FinancialCrime #Compliance #AI #Napier

AI has the potential to transform AML, reducing false positives, improving detection and uncovering patterns traditional systems miss. Yet many firms remain stuck in pilot programmes. Why? Because trust, not technology, is becoming the biggest barrier to adoption. In this latest blog, Dr Janet Bastiman explores why explainability, governance and auditability are now essential requirements for scaling AI in AML, and why "glass box" transparency is replacing black box models as the foundation of regulatory confidence. Michael Joseph, CAMS featured in American Banker today, discussing the final rule issued yesterday, which permanently exempts domestic companies and U.S. persons from beneficial ownership reporting requirements. "Banks still have to know who owns their legal entity customers, and they have always built that picture themselves, because the registry was designed around law enforcement and never opened to financial institutions" "The United States will now have no federal record of who owns its companies. The record each bank builds is the only one there is, and its accuracy comes down to how well an institution sources ownership data and resolves it to the right people, because sanctions and [Politically Exposed Persons] screening can only be as good as the names it runs." FinCEN's Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) asks a different question than our industry is used to: not how much time AI saves compliance teams, but how much crime it actually helps identify. Michael Joseph, CAMS unpacked this recently with Samrat Jain, MBA, CAMS (PwC), Murat D. Dagli (Remitly), and moderator Christopher Phillips at the ACAMS New Jersey Chapter. Most AI in transaction monitoring today sits on the efficiency side: faster alert triage, better Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) drafting. Valuable, but the rules already did the detecting. The harder, more important shift is putting AI on the detection side itself. It also changes the build vs buy calculus, since this is something you run in production for the next decade, not a project you finish.
