It occurs to me that most of my stories that people claim are the most fucked up ones came about for stupid reasons
Angel -- from a goosebumps book
Original Sin -- from a random greentext I ran into about a star
How to Escape the Well -- danganronpa
So Danganronpa 3 has this execution in it:
and I was watching somebody play the game on youtube (this is how I wean off games that impact me after I've finished playing them myself) and somebody in the comments mentioned, offhand, that it's based on a Japanese story about somebody trapped in hell who finds a cobweb leading out. I have not read the story in question, but I was struck by the image of somebody trapped in hell with such a fragile escape route offered to them, something so fragile and so chancy, something that would almost certainly fail if they tried it but that might, MIGHT work. For someone in such a position, what would be the better use of their find? A desperate escape that would almost certainly (but only ALMOST certainly) fail, or an eternity of hope of success that could give them the strength to endure?
So I wrote that story.
