HERE LIES: HEATHERSANIMATIONS

@boxheadpaint / boxheadpaint.tumblr.com

If you contact me for the past week or next full business day sorry as always

anyway going to fully harness my lethargy and turn it on its own ass by sleeping the whole day so I basically time travel to surgery AND miss out on being hungry for the 8 hours beforehand. It’s early early morning on the 13th currently, in theory 24 hours from now I’m gonna get [looks around] totaly awesomesauce with my life

april is sjögren’s disease awareness month

sjögren’s is one of the most common causes of dysautonomia.

sjögren’s is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease that is commonly considered 'just' a disease of dry eyes and dry mouth.

and this characterization of sjögren’s being just dry eyes and dry mouth (although those alone can be very disabling!), is wrong.

in the US alone, it is estimated that 4 million people have sjögren’s disease (millions more than lupus!), and 75% of those patients are undiagnosed. and a lot of this is because too many people only think of sjögren’s as dry eyes and dry mouth. a LOT of patients do not complain of dryness, or only have dryness after other major damage.

sjögren’s disease can affect anyone at any age. it can harm the nervous system, eyes, ears, skin, muscles, joints, mouth, teeth, brain, liver, gut, lungs, and way more. it can cause chronic pain, fatigue, brain fog, infections, loss of vision or hearing. sjögren’s is NOT just dryness. it can be profoundly disabling and it can fucking kill you.

and there is no real diagnostic criteria. the guidelines were designed for research purposes only, and a lot of patients test negative based on those guidelines. the blood test for sjögren’s, by itself, is negative in 30%-40% of patients who have sjögren’s.

which is especially fucking bad since sjögren’s patients are 40 times more likely to develop cancer of the lymph nodes, or lymphoma. sjögren’s patients are more likely to have strokes, heart attacks, miscarriages. sjögren’s patients often have or develop another disorder of the immune system, like another autoimmune disease.

sjögren’s is everywhere. it is not curable and it is not taken seriously enough. it can cause major problems, it can be deadly, it can be monitored, and it can be treated.

I want to tell you a really important story. once upon a time there was an attorney who loved snowboarding. she was very active physically. one day, she went from snowboarding and practicing law to being bedridden. she had major fatigue, pain, chest pain, and was blacking out when she stood up. and a lot of other symptoms. so she started to go to doctors.

the doctors did not believe she was as sick as she said, and sometimes even that she was sick at all. tests and scans came back 'normal'. blood test came back 'healthy'. doctors said it was all in her head. and even when doctors did believe her, they could not figure out what was up. one doctor told her, to her face, that she was faking her symptoms for her husband's attention because she did not have babies yet. as a 31 year old attorney!

it took over 100 doctors before someone screened her for sjögren’s disease. these were top doctors, specialists, experts. it was doctor #116 that finally looked for sjögren’s. it turned out that sjögren’s was attacking her autonomic nervous system and causing dysautonomia. but she was not having any dryness! and because there was no dryness, nobody even considered sjögren’s until then, even though it was causing so many problems. even though sjögren’s was destroying her body and her life.

she got treated, and she got way better.

this patient went on to found an organization in the hopes that other patients could have it better than her some day. the name of that organization is dysautonomia international. this is the story of lauren, the founder and leader of dysautonomia international.

most patients cannot afford to see 116 fucking doctors to get a sjögren’s diagnosis. awareness of sjögren’s disease changes and saves lives.
