In a surprising move, Red Bull has announced the immediate promotion of Yuki Tsunoda to their senior F1 team, replacing Liam Lawson just two races into the 2025 season. The decision, which comes ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix, marks a significant turnaround for Tsunoda, who was previously overlooked for a Red Bull seat in favor of the New Zealander.

Yuki Tsunoda finally earns Red Bull promotion and shares his thoughts on the career-defining move

Yuki Tsunoda, 24, will now line up alongside multiple-time world champion Max Verstappen, making him the fifth driver to partner the Dutchman since 2018. His promotion not only secures his F1 career but also comes at a crucial time, with Honda—his longtime backer—set to shift its allegiance to Aston Martin in 2026. Meanwhile, Lawson will return to the Racing Bulls team to race alongside French rookie Isack Hadjar for the remainder of the season.

Following the announcement, Tsunoda shared his gratitude in a heartfelt message to his former team and supporters. Speaking in a video posted by Racing Bulls, he said:
"Hey guys, Yuki here! I just wanted to say a massive thank you to the team and to the amazing VCARB fans for such an incredible ride and so many special memories. I'm staying in the Red Bull family so I won't be far. I'll see you guys around the paddock."

In a separate clip, now donning the Red Bull team colors, he expressed his excitement about debuting for the senior team at his home Grand Prix in Suzuka:
"I'm looking forward to running in my home GP with Red Bull Racing."
The timing of his promotion couldn't be more fitting. The Suzuka circuit, owned by Honda, has been instrumental in Tsunoda's career development. With Honda's direct support, this race presents an ideal stage for him to prove his worth in front of home fans and Red Bull’s decision-makers.

A Chance to Secure His Future in F1

Tsunoda's path to Red Bull hasn’t been straightforward. After joining Formula 1 with the team’s junior outfit—previously known as AlphaTauri—in 2021, his long-term potential has often been questioned. However, his solid performances at the start of the 2025 season, including a P5 qualification in Australia and a sixth-place sprint finish in China, may have convinced Red Bull’s management to give him a shot.

With Honda’s future in Red Bull uncertain beyond 2025, Tsunoda must seize this opportunity to prove he belongs in the top tier of F1. A strong showing alongside Verstappen could solidify his place in the team and silence doubts about his long-term capabilities. For now, all eyes are on Suzuka, where Tsunoda will take the next big step in his career.
