University field station newsletter told me giant millipedes are particularly active this time of year “when they’re on the move for important millipede reasons.” I think that might be scientist secret code for “nobody really knows why.” All we know is the millipedes are moving for some reason and it must be important or they wouldn’t do it. Important millipede reasons.

Are Humans Self-Aware?
Ants have often tested humans for self awareness. They placed objects in our homes and were shocked we didn’t cover them in sand.
“Although humans build interesting nests & show signs of cooperation, can they really have rich inner lives like ants? Unlikely.”
They laid pheromone trails & we ignored them.
“Even a newly eclosed callow or a termite could have followed these trails! Human intelligence is perhaps similar to that of a lichen… or perhaps an aphid at best.”
“Is higher reasoning or self awareness really possible in a creature without the ability to express herself using pheromones? A creature without antennae?”
“Humans do seem to have smell receptors. They respond to some pheromones.”
“But aren’t those responses simple stimulus response? Spray a human with formic acid and she will squeal. But we can hardly call this evidence of thought or a theory of mind!”
“Humans may communicate with sounds.”
“Stridulations?”
“Simple ones. Yes.”
