lines is the answer you’ll usually get if you ask someone how psychedelics work.

The thinking to date has been, when a non-ordinary state of consciousness is induced by a psychedelic molecule, part of the brain goes quiet or shuts off. That quiet space is where the experience comes from. It’s a clean story, however it’s also not entirely accurate.

The Default Mode Network (DMN for short)

The default mode network is a system in the brain that runs your sense of self. It’s your inner narrator and the voice that’s constantly narrating who you are and what just happened to you. The DMN is active almost all the time, which is why the “shut it off” story is so appealing. If you can quiet the narrator, you might be able to get some peace. With that peace you can have the opportunity for new perspectives and insights that can be solidified into new behaviours, thought patterns and habits.

Robin Carhart-Harris is one of the most prominent researchers in the field of psychedelics. He’s spent a lot of time studying the brain with specialized imaging equipment under the influence of psychedelics. He has a different take on the theory and says parts of the brain shutting off is not what’s actually happening.

Not off. Disorganized.

Instead of switching off during a psychedelic experience, the DMN disorganizes. Its usual tight and coordinated patterns break apart. Researchers say that during the experience, brain entropy goes up. Entropy just means disorder. When the brain system is in disorder, there are more possible states and less predictability. That’s a different claim than “quiet” or “shutting off”. A disorganized system isn’t absent. It can be doing more and the key to this, is that its not doing it in its usual tidy pattern and structured way.

The new theory is that mental health conditions like depression aren’t chemical imbalances, they are a brain caught up in rigid, repetitive patterns of thinking and belief. This theory on brain entropy supports why psychedelic sessions may be so profound for people stuck in these rigid patterns.

Unzipping a compressed file.

A useful way to think about brain entropy increasing under the influence of psychedelics is “like unzipping a compressed file”.

Nothing gets deleted or switched off. What’s already in there, all the material your brain normally keeps folded up and out of view so you can function, becomes visible instead of staying compressed.

This thinking reframes the entire experience. It’s not about escape or numbing out. It’s access. Everything that surfaces in a session was already there. The medicine didn’t put it there. It just stopped keeping it zipped up and compartmentalized.

This matches what I actually see in the room.

I’ve watched a lot of sessions and sat in a fair few ceremonies at this point, and “shutting down” was never the right description for what I was seeing. People don’t go blank. If anything, they go the opposite direction. More comes up, not less. Old memories surface, feelings buried for years bubble up to the surface, and connections start to appear between things that have never been put together before.

That always looked like more brain activity to me, not less, just organized differently. Turns out that’s closer to what the research actually shows.

Why this distinction actually matters.

A lot of marketing in this space still leans on the idea of ego death, blankness and escape. That correlates with the theory of psychedelics shutting the brain down or parts of it going quiet. It’s pushing the goal of less thought, less self and a kind of dissolving.

But if what’s actually happening is disorganization, the goal looks completely different. It’s not about getting less of yourself. It’s about getting a less rigid version of yourself, one where the file that’s usually kept zipped up and inaccessible is finally sitting open on the desk in front of you.

You still have to do something with what’s in the file. But you can’t do anything with it while it stays compressed. This is why preparation and integration practices are so important to the psychedelic experience. The prep work helps us become emotional ready for the experience and the integration phase helps us move through and process the material that came up. This is what helps altered states become altered traits.

Healing is not a mystery. It’s a method. And the method starts with what gets unzipped, not what gets shut off.

If you’ve ever assumed psychedelics work by numbing you out, share this with someone who needs the correction.

What if Depression Isn’t a Chemical Imbalance?

On Robin clinic, watching people move through some of the hardest weeks of their lives. If there’s one thing I keep coming back to, it’s this: brain chemistry alone doesn’t explain what I see in that room.

Robin Carhart-Harris has a new book coming out, How Psychedelics Work: The Hidden Mind and Our Power to Heal. I want to talk about it, because the idea at the centre of it is one I’ve been trying to articulate for years.

For decades, the working theory of mental illness has been chemical. Depression is low serotonin. Anxiety is a dysregulated stress response. Fix the chemistry, fix the person. It’s a tidy story, and it sold a lot of prescriptions, but it always felt incomplete to anyone who’s sat with someone in the middle of a depressive episode. Chemistry might be part of the picture. It isn’t the whole picture.

Subscribe now

Carhart-Harris’s argument, from what he’s shared so far, is that illness looks less like a broken chemical and more like a mind that’s gotten stuck in rigid patterns. Beliefs and narratives about yourself, about what’s possible, calcified to the point where new information stops getting through. You can hand someone a stack of evidence that contradicts their self-story and watch it slide right off. That isn’t a chemistry problem. It’s a structural one.

This tracks with what I watch happen in our clinic. People come in carrying a story about themselves that’s often years old, sometimes decades old, and the story is doing more damage at this point than whatever originally caused it. The event or events happened. The narrative about them runs on a loop indefinitely, reinforcing itself every time it fires.

Where psychedelics come in, is that they loosen that rigidity. Not permanently, not magically, but for a window, the mind gets more plastic. New connections form. Old patterns lose some of their grip. That’s the mechanism Carhart-Harris has spent decades testing in clinical trials, and it’s a different claim than “psychedelics make you feel good.” Feeling good is easy. Getting a rigid brain to entertain a different story about itself is the actual work, and it’s the part most casual coverage of this field skips over.

I keep thinking about the etymology he leans on, too. “Psychedelic” comes from Greek for soul-revealing. Something that was already there, uncovered, rather than something new bolted on. It’s a bold and unusal thing for a scientist to build a book around, but I think it’s the right frame. The people I’ve watched go through this work rarely say they became someone new. More often they say they can finally see who they’d been the whole time, underneath the loop.

Which points at the bigger question sitting underneath the clinical framing. If a few hours of altered consciousness can hand someone a clearer view of themselves than years of talk therapy sometimes manages, what does that say about how we construct a sense of self to begin with? That’s not a small question, and I don’t think this book is going to settle it. I don’t think it’s trying to. But it’s the first time I’ve seen someone with Carhart-Harris’s research background connect the clinical mechanism to that bigger question without flinching away from either side of it, and that combination is rare enough that I wanted to flag it before the book is even out.

The Scariest Thing About Psychedelic Therapy is Also your life through glass, I want to talk about why that might be happening.

SSRIs work by turning down the volume on your emotional life. That’s the design. You stop feeling the worst of it. The panic eases. The despair gets quieter. And for a lot of people, that breathing room is genuinely life saving.

But here’s what nobody tells you on the way in: the volume knob doesn’t have a setting for “just the bad stuff.” It turns everything down. The grief gets quieter, but so does the joy. The anxiety fades, but so does the excitement. You stop drowning, which is good. But you also stop feeling the water at all.

A lot of people describe this as watching their own life from behind glass. Present, technically. But not really there.

Psychedelics do the opposite.

They don’t turn the volume down. They turn it all the way up.

Everything you’ve been managing, suppressing, holding at arm’s length, it comes forward. Sometimes gently. Sometimes like a wall of water. You don’t get to choose which feelings show up or in what order. The medicine puts you in the room with all of it.

That’s the part people are most afraid of. It’s also the part that works.

Processing doesn’t happen when you’re numb.

We’ve built an entire treatment model around reducing symptoms, which usually means reducing what you feel. For acute crisis, that makes sense. When someone is in danger, you stabilize them.

But stabilization was never supposed to be the whole treatment. It was supposed to buy time for the deeper work. Somewhere along the way, we started treating the pause button like it was the cure.

The feelings didn’t go away while you were numb. They just waited.

Feeling is the mechanism.

Psychedelics work because they let you feel what’s actually there. The grief you skipped. The anger you swallowed because it wasn’t safe to let it out. The sadness you medicated before you ever got to understand what it was about.

In a session, that material surfaces. You sit with it. You let it move through your body the way it was always trying to. And when it moves, something that was stuck for years starts to shift.

That’s not a side effect. That is the medicine.

A note here.

Some people need SSRIs. Some need them long term. I’m not a doctor and this isn’t medical advice.

But if you’ve been medicated for years and still feel like something is missing, like you traded pain for a kind of flatness that doesn’t feel like living either, that experience is real. It’s worth paying attention to.

There’s a difference between managing your feelings and processing them. One keeps you stable. The other is how you actually heal.

The feelings you’ve been holding at a distance are not your enemy. They might be the most important information your system has been trying to give you.

At some point, you have to let yourself feel them. That’s where the work lives.

Healing is not a mystery. It’s a method. And the method requires you to feel.

If you’ve been watching your life through glass, share this with someone who gets it.

Your Brain Isn't Broken. depressed because your brain doesn’t make enough serotonin. The antidepressant corrects the imbalance. Problem identified. Problem solved.

It’s a clean story. A medical story. One that made millions of people feel less crazy and more treatable.

There’s just one problem.

It was never true.

The study nobody talked about

In 2022, a major umbrella review published in Molecular Psychiatry concluded there is no consistent evidence that depression is caused by low serotonin levels or serotonin activity. The lead researcher was a professor at University College London. Not fringe scientists. Not a conspiracy blog.

Not weak evidence. Not mixed. No consistent evidence.

It made the news for about 48 hours. Then the world moved on.

Most people on antidepressants still don’t know this.

This doesn’t mean the pills don’t work

Some people get real relief from SSRIs. That’s documented and I’m not here to tell anyone to throw their prescription in the bin.

But “it helps some people” and “we know why it helps” are two different claims. Psychiatry has been confidently making the second claim for thirty years while only being able to prove the first.

The honest answer: we don’t fully understand why antidepressants help when they do. And for roughly a third of people, they don’t help at all. For that group, the chemical imbalance story doesn’t just fail medically. It fails in a deeper way.

It says your brain is broken in a way the drug should fix. When the drug doesn’t fix it, the only conclusion available is that you must be even more broken than the doctor thought.

People carry that story and yt does real damage.

So what is depression, if not a chemical imbalance?

Research coming out of the psychedelic therapy field suggests depression is better understood as a signal than a deficiency. Not a broken brain, but a mind under pressure it can no longer absorb. Not a serotonin shortage, but a system that has run out of ways to adapt to pain, loss, or a life that stopped fitting a long time ago.

Psychedelics don’t flood the brain with serotonin. They loosen rigid thought patterns that trap people in loops of rumination and self-criticism, opening a window where the brain can form new connections and reach emotions it had walled off.

It’s a genuinely different model. And it explains something SSRIs almost never can: why people come out of a single session reporting not just relief, but a different relationship with themselves entirely.

The story we tell about illness shapes the story we tell about healing

If you believe you have a chemical imbalance, you wait for a pill to correct it. You are a patient. Someone else manages the problem.

If you understand that your nervous system has been trying to tell you something, through pain, through shutdown, through the depression that showed up right when your life stopped making sense, then you have a say in your own recovery.

The chemical imbalance theory didn’t just fail scientifically. It failed people by locating the problem inside their biology instead of inside their life. It pointed in the wrong direction for decades.

Your brain isn’t broken. The theory was.

And knowing that is actually a place to start.

Healing is not a mystery. It’s a method. And the method starts with an honest diagnosis.

If this changes how you see your own story, share it with someone who needs to hear it.

Always Healing, Never Healed

When the work becomes the of us have turned healing into an identity. And it’s keeping us stuck.

Here’s how it happens.

You do your first ceremony, therapy deep-dive or breathwork session that cracks something open. And it’s real. Genuinely transformative. You see yourself clearly for the first time. You feel things you’ve been avoiding for years. You cry the kind of tears that actually change something.

And then you think: I need more of this.

So you go back. Another ceremony. Another retreat. Another modality. Another practitioner. Another book. Another podcast about shadow work. Another 90-day integration program.

And somewhere along the way, so gradually you don’t notice, the healing stops being a path and starts becoming a place you live.

The spiritual community has a problem it doesn’t talk about.

We’ve built an entire culture around the idea that you’re always a work in progress. That there’s always another layer. Always another wound to excavate. Always more shadow to face.

And that’s partly true. Growth doesn’t stop. Life keeps presenting new material.

But there’s a difference between growing and never allowing yourself to be whole.

At some point “I’m doing the work” becomes a way of saying “I’m not ready to live yet.” The healing becomes a holding pattern. A sophisticated form of avoidance dressed up as depth.

You’re not avoiding life by watching TV anymore. You’re avoiding it by doing another plant medicine ceremony.

Subscribe now

Healing was never meant to be a permanent address.

It’s a bridge. You cross it. You get to the other side. And then you live.

But we’ve romanticized the bridge. We’ve built houses on it. We’ve made it our whole identity, the healer, the seeker, the one who’s always doing the deep work.

Meanwhile life is happening on the other side. Relationships that need your presence, not your process. Work that needs your energy, not your latest breakthrough. Joy that’s available right now, not after the next retreat.

The ego hides in healing too.

This is the part no one wants to hear.

The ego doesn’t just live in your ambition, your anger, your need for control. It also lives in your spiritual identity. In the subtle pride of being someone who “does the work.” In the quiet superiority of being more conscious, more aware, more healed-but-still-healing than everyone around you.

If your healing journey has made you feel more special rather than more ordinary, more separate rather than more connected, that’s worth looking at.

Real healing doesn’t make you feel above anyone. It makes you feel like everyone.

How do you know if you’re stuck?

Ask yourself honestly:

Am I using the next ceremony to avoid making a decision I already know the answer to?

Am I processing the same wound for the third year because it’s familiar, or because there’s genuinely more there?

Am I waiting to feel “healed enough” before I let myself be happy?

Have I made healing my personality?

These aren’t judgments. They’re invitations to be honest with yourself, which, ironically, is the deepest healing work there is.

At some point you have to choose to be whole.

Not because every wound is resolved. Not because every shadow is integrated. Not because you’ve completed some invisible checklist.

But because wholeness was never something you had to earn.

The seed doesn’t heal its way into being a tree. It just grows. It lets the sun in. It reaches toward light and it lives.

You’ve done the work. Maybe it’s time to trust that.

Maybe it’s time to stop preparing for your life and start living it.

Always healing is still never healed.

And never healed is just another story you’re telling yourself. The most spiritual thing you can do might be the least spiritual thing you can imagine:

Put down the tools. Walk off the bridge.

And just live.

Healing is not a mystery. It’s a method. But a method is only useful if you know when to stop using it.

If this hit a nerve — good. Share it with someone who needs to hear it too.

Feel It Before You Figure It Out

Your visions aren't puzzles. Feel them.

The images that show up in an expanded state aren’t puzzles waiting to be solved. They’re not instructions. They’re not code you need to crack before the medicine wears off.

They’re the language of something deeper than thought, and they don’t speak through logic, they speak through sensation and feeling.

So when a vision arrives, resist the urge to figure it out. Instead, ask yourself: how does this feel in my body? Tight? Open? Soft? Heavy? Where do I feel it? Chest? Throat? Gut?

That texture, that physical response, holds more wisdom than any intellectual breakdown ever will. As one guide put it to me: the image isn’t the message. The feeling is.

Your thinking mind will try to take over. Let it wait.

This is where most people go wrong. The vision appears and immediately the analytical brain fires up: what does this mean? Is this about my childhood? Is this a metaphor for my relationship?

That instinct makes sense. But it gets in the way. Cognitive analysis in the moment can actually block the deeper knowing from surfacing. You end up with a story about the experience instead of the experience itself.

The better approach is a feelings-based inquiry. Don’t interpret, notice. Let the images sit with you. Let the information rise on its own rather than pulling it out by force.

The thinking mind gets its turn later. Just not yet.

Subscribe now

Meaning takes its time. Let it.

One of the most consistent things I’ve heard from experienced practitioners is this: don’t rush.

Don’t make big decisions based on what you saw. Don’t tattoo the symbol on your arm the next morning. Instead, see what sticks. If a vision stays with you, days later, weeks later, that’s a signal worth paying attention to.

Think of your visuals like pieces of a puzzle that won’t make sense until you have more of the picture. One image on its own might mean nothing. But three journeys later, placed next to everything else you’ve experienced, it suddenly clicks.

Integration isn’t instant. It unfolds in ripples, sometimes for weeks, sometimes months. Journal about what you saw. Sketch it. Make music. Sit in silence with the memory and let it breathe. Don’t force it into a neat box. Give it room.

You are the best interpreter of your own experience.

This is the part people forget.

The visions came from your psyche. Your body. Your life. Your unconscious. Which means no one else, no guide, no book, no AI, is better positioned to understand them than you.

You shortchange yourself the moment you outsource your meaning-making. A symbols dictionary will give you someone else’s framework. An overeager guide will give you their interpretation. Neither is yours.

The visuals are symbolic representations of aspects of your life, past, present, or future, that are asking for your attention. They’re deeply personal. Honour that.

And here’s the most liberating thing anyone ever told me about this work: not everything needs to make sense. You don’t have to interpret every image. You don’t have to assign meaning to every feeling. Some things are okay to just be. You don’t always need to recruit your logical mind for an experience to change you.

Meaning-making is a creative act.

It’s right there in the name. You’re not hunting for some objective truth hidden inside the vision. You’re not solving for X. You’re making meaning. That’s fundamentally creative.

During the journey, you let go. You surrendered to the medicine and it took you where it wanted to go. Now it’s your turn to take back the wheel. You get to decide what that geometry or images meant and how you want to carry it forward.

This isn’t about getting it right. There is no right. It’s about getting it useful. What meaning serves your healing? What interpretation helps you grow?

Your visions are ink waiting for an artist.

Pick up the pen.

Healing is not a mystery. It’s a method. And sometimes the method is fire.

If this stirred something in you, share it with someone standing at their own threshold.

The As the medicine takes hold, the first veil to part is the endless chatter of the ego.

The endless loop. The narration. The voice that tells you who you are, what to worry about, what to protect. The ego, that tireless narrator, finally goes quiet.

And then the flood begins.

What rises can be pretty or confronting.

Geometry first. Fractals. Kaleidoscopic imagery that feels beautiful, ancient and overwhelming in equal measure. Then something deeper can emerge, the weight of personal wounds you thought you’d buried. Living doorways that ask one question: are you willing to keep going?

To be taken apart by the experience is not failure. It’s transformation. Future on the right. You in the middle, dragging everything that happened behind you and bracing for everything that hasn’t yet.

This feels like reality. It feels like the only way experience can work.

But what if it’s just a structure your mind built, and mistook for the world?

Psychedelics bend time.

Not metaphorically. Experientially.

Seconds stretch into what feels like hours. Years of memory collapse into a single breath. The neat line your brain draws from past to present to future, before, now, after, starts to warp. And then, sometimes, it dissolves entirely.

What’s left when the timeline drops away isn’t confusion. It’s presence. Raw, unfiltered, startlingly alive.

Most of your suffering lives in time.

Think about it. Regret lives in the past. Anxiety lives in the future. The two places you spend most of your mental energy are the two places that don’t actually exist right now.

The present moment, this one, the one you’re in, is almost never the problem. The problem is the story your mind is telling about what already happened or what might happen next.

Psychedelics reveal this directly. Not as a concept you read in a book. As something you feel in your bones.

There’s a version of you that exists outside the story.

Not the character navigating the plot of your life. Not the one keeping score, tracking wins, losses, failures, progress.

Something underneath all of that. A self that isn’t defined by what happened to it. That isn’t waiting for the next chapter to feel okay.

Call it consciousness. Call it presence. Call it whatever you want.

It’s the part of you that was there before the story started. And it’s still here now, under the noise, under the narrative, under the endless mental motion of past and future.

Fully awake. Unbound by time.

You don’t need psychedelics to taste this.

But they make it hard to miss.

And once you’ve glimpsed it, once you’ve felt what it’s like to exist without the weight of your own timeline, the question stops being philosophical and becomes personal:

How much of your suffering is actually happening right now? And how much of it is just your mind, insisting that time is real?

By temporarily letting go of chronological constraints, we glimpse a timeless self, one that is not bound by stories, but fully alive in the present. Imagine living not as a character in a story, but as consciousness itself, awake, free, and unbound by time.

Healing is not a mystery. It’s a method. And sometimes the method is remembering that this moment is the only one that exists.

If this bent your thinking, share it with someone stuck in yesterday or bracing for tomorrow.

The Courage to Go In

Expanded states don’t give you answers. top of you, there’s an original self. Whole. Unscathed. The one that walked into childhood expecting the world to be safe and people to be kind.

Expanded states of consciousness can be a tool to let you find that self again. Not as a concept, but as a lived experience. And from that place, you can look back at the child who endured everything and meet them with the compassion they never received.

That’s where healing starts. Not in understanding what happened. In feeling it and choosing love anyway.

Talk therapy has limits.

I don’t say that to dismiss it. Regular psychotherapy can be deeply rewarding. However, expanded states access something different. Something visceral. Something that goes straight to the core, especially the preverbal wounds that words can’t reach.

It’s not a shortcut. It’s a direct route.

And yes, that directness demands more care. More integration. More attention to what happens after. But the depth is unmatched.

You don’t always get what you ask for. You get what you need.

Some people say this work is spiritual bypassing, that the bliss of oneness just masks the pain underneath. And that can happen. If you chase the peak and skip the process.

But connecting with something larger than yourself isn’t avoidance. For someone in despair, it can be the first glimpse of hope they’ve had in years. The spiritual doesn’t replace the personal work. It fuels it.

You don’t need a substance to go in.

Expanded states come in many forms. Meditation. Breathwork. Movement. Ceremony. The depth you reach depends on the method and on your readiness.

Someone just beginning might start with a day of silence. Someone further along might sit with a plant medicine and a trusted guide. The entry point matters less than the willingness.

Because that’s the real medicine, the willingness to look inside.

It’s not about what you’ll find. It’s not about resolving everything in one sitting. It’s that you showed up for yourself. That act alone is healing.

Subscribe now

The two fears.

I once heard that there are only two real fears: madness and death. These two fears are at the bottom of everything, every other fear is just one of those two wearing a costume. These are the fears that meet you at the threshold of every deep inner journey.

And the two things you need to walk through them? Faith and surrender.

Surrender isn’t passive. Faith isn’t certainty. It’s the quiet knowing that the process is intelligent. That your intention matters. That even when things feel stuck, something is moving beneath the surface.

Every time you surrender, you learn.

You learn that you can endure more than you thought. You start to see that your life, even the hardest parts, has a strange coherence to it. That your struggles weren’t random. They were invitations to grow.

Pain becomes suffering only when it has no meaning. Give it meaning, and the relationship changes entirely.

The courage to go in is the liberation.

Not the destination. Not the vision. Not the breakthrough.

The courage itself.

Each time you face the fear and go in anyway, you come back a little more free. A little more trusting. A little more willing to meet life without armour.

That’s the practice. That’s the path.

And it doesn’t end. It deepens.

Healing is not a mystery. It’s a method. And the method asks one thing of you — the courage to look.

What If You're Not Who You Think You Are?

Psychedelic therapy doesn't just treat symptoms. A useful fiction. A loop that runs so constantly you forgot it was running at all.

That’s not a theory. That’s what neuroscience is increasingly confirming. And then you see.

In a psychedelic therapeutic session, something happens that ordinary talk therapy can’t replicate. The boundaries of the ego, that narrator, that defended sense of “I”, temporarily soften. Sometimes they dissolve entirely.

This isn’t a breakdown. It’s a seeing-through.

In that space, the material that lives beneath the story starts to surface. Unresolved trauma you thought you’d processed. Ancestral patterns you inherited without knowing it. Cultural conditioning so deeply embedded you mistook it for your personality.

It rises. Not to overwhelm you. To be witnessed.

The visions are not noise.

People in psychedelic states encounter things. Spirits. Archetypes. Geometries. Ancestors. Scenes that feel more real than waking life.

The clinical instinct is to call these hallucinations. But that word implies meaninglessness, random firings of a disrupted brain.

What if they’re something else entirely?

These experiences function as symbolic gateways. They’re the psyche’s language, older and deeper than words, pointing toward truths about connection, mortality, belonging, and the nature of consciousness itself. They don’t need to be literally real to be profoundly true.

Shadow becomes clarity.

Jung called it the shadow, the parts of yourself you’ve exiled. The anger you buried. The grief you skipped. The desires you learned to be ashamed of.

Psychedelic therapy doesn’t let you keep hiding from these. It brings them forward into the light. Not to punish you. To complete something.

This is the alchemy. When you stop running from the parts of yourself you’ve rejected, the energy you spent defending against them gets freed. What was a labyrinth of avoidance becomes clarity. Empathy. Creative insight. A capacity for honesty that wasn’t available before.

Confronting the shadow doesn’t destroy you. It integrates you.

You are not a fixed thing.

This might be the most important shift psychedelic therapy offers. Not a cure. Not a fix. A complete reframe of what you are.

You are not a person with a set identity moving through a fixed world. You are a process. An unfolding. A node in a vast and interconnected web of consciousness, relationship, and meaning.

The self you’ve been defending so fiercely isn’t a fortress worth protecting. It’s a cocoon worth outgrowing.

Psychedelic therapy doesn’t just treat mental illness. It invites you into a different relationship with being itself, one where you stop clinging to a story and start participating in something much larger.

That’s not just medicine.

It’s a philosophy of being alive.

Healing is not a mystery. It’s a method. And the method begins with questioning the one thing you never thought to question — yourself.

If this cracked something open in you, share it with someone still living inside the story.

The Four Laws of a Good Life

A Shipibo shaman’s framework for living in alignment, and why the to put down. The 4 laws of living a good life.

Not commandments, not rules, but a sequence. An architecture for living a good life, one where each element holds up the next like stones in an arch. Remove one, or place them out of order, and the whole structure shifts.

I’ve thought about it almost every day since.

The First Law: Ceremony.

Not religion. Not ritual for the sake of ritual. Ceremony, the practice of tending to your inner world.

This can look like plant medicine. It can also look like meditation, prayer, journaling, silence, time in nature. The form matters less than the function: you are turning inward, deliberately, and caring for your spirit the way you’d care for your body.

Why does this come first? Because everything that follows depends on it. You cannot pour from a life that is running on empty. You cannot offer real love, real presence, real service if you haven’t first found your own balance, your own clarity, your own peace.

When we honor ceremony, we care for our inner world and tend to our spirit.
It gives us balance, clarity, and peace. Because only when we feel whole inside, can we truly give to others.

Ceremony fills you. So that what comes next has something to draw from.

The Second Law: Family.

The people closest to you. The inner circle.

When ceremony fills you with light, with genuine wholeness, that light doesn’t stay contained. It radiates outward, naturally, starting with the people nearest to you. Your patience grows. Your presence deepens. Your capacity to love without condition expands.

This is how families heal. Not through fixing each other, but through one person getting right with themselves and letting that shift the atmosphere of the home.

Your love, your groundedness, your joy, these become the foundation the people around you stand on.

The Third Law: Work.

Not your job title. Not your salary. Your work, the thing you do in the world with your hands, your mind, and your time.

When ceremony has centred you and family has grounded you, work transforms. It stops being about survival and starts becoming an offering. Something done with intention. Something that helps. Something that reminds you, daily, that you are here to serve, not just to earn.

Aligned work doesn’t drain you. It confirms you.

The Fourth Law: Community.

The widest circle.

Through community, you give back what ceremony gave you. You weave connection. You create belonging. You participate in shared purpose, the kind that makes a society worth living in.

Community isn’t networking. It’s the natural extension of a life lived in alignment. When your inner world is tended, your family is loved, and your work is true, community becomes the place where all of it means something beyond just you.

The order is the teaching.

This isn’t a list. It’s a sequence. And I think the order is where most of us go wrong.

We start with work. We grind until we’re depleted. We come home empty and wonder why our relationships suffer. We try to show up for community from a place of exhaustion. And ceremony, the inner work, gets pushed to “someday.”

The shaman’s teaching inverts everything we’ve been told.

Start inside. Fill yourself first. Let that fullness flow outward to family, to work, to the world. Not as obligation, but as overflow.

Ceremony. Family. Work. Community.

When all four align, in that order, you’re not just getting through life.

You’re living your purpose.

Healing is not a mystery. It’s a method. And sometimes the method has been held by others for centuries — waiting for us to listen.

If this framework shifted something in you, share it with someone who’s been starting from the wrong end.

Healing Happens in the Present

It’s not a destination. us.

That it’s a project. A finish line. A version of yourself you arrive at after enough therapy, enough ceremonies, enough books, enough work. That one day, if you do it right, you’ll be healed. Past tense. Complete.

It’s a beautiful idea. It’s also not how it works.

Healing isn’t separate from life.

It’s not a place you go and come back from. It’s not a checklist you complete and file away. It’s not a future state waiting on the other side of more effort.

Healing happens inside of being.

In the breath you’re taking right now. In the moments you sit quietly with yourself without needing to be productive. In the way you let yourself actually feel something instead of immediately moving to manage it. In the small, almost invisible moments when you stop trying to fix yourself and start listening to what’s already there.

That’s where it lives. Not in the peak experience. Not in the breakthrough. In the quiet, present, ordinary moment of being honest with yourself.

Presence is the practice.

When you’re fully here, with your body, your emotions, your truth as it actually is in this moment, something interesting happens.

Healing and being stop being two different things.

You’re not healing toward a better life. You’re not waiting to feel okay before you can live. You’re not postponing your existence until the work is done.

You’re here. You’re listening. You’re letting what’s true be true.

And from that overlap, that simple, radical act of being present with yourself, life genuinely starts to change. Not because you forced it. Because you finally stopped getting in its way.

This is the work.

Not the dramatic version of healing. The quiet one.

The breath. The pause. The willingness to feel what’s here without trying to make it something else. The small daily decision to stop running and start listening.

You don’t need to wait for the next ceremony, the next breakthrough, the next big shift.

It’s already available. It’s available right now.

Healing is not a mystery. It’s a method. what to become, or shown a diagram of an oak tree, or coached on how to grow. The full intelligence of the tree is already inside it, patient, encoded, waiting.

It just needs the right conditions. Soil. Light. Water. Time.

The rest unfolds on its own.

We are no different.

There’s something inside you that already knows.

Not consciously. Not in a way you can always articulate. But somewhere beneath the noise of daily life, a quieter intelligence is tracking the distance between who you are and who you’re meant to become. And it speaks, constantly, through your body and your emotions.

Tightness in the chest. A restlessness you can’t name. Anxiety that arrives without an obvious cause. A heaviness in situations that should feel light.

These aren’t malfunctions. They’re signals. They’re the cost of being untrue to yourself, your inner system telling you that you’ve drifted from your own path.

Healing isn’t becoming someone new.

This is the reframe most healing modalities miss.

You don’t need to be fixed. You don’t need to be optimized into a better version of yourself. You don’t need a new identity, a new personality, a new philosophy bolted on top of the old one.

You need to come back.

Back to the intelligence that was always there. Back to the body that’s been trying to speak to you. Back to the intuition you learned to override. Back to the version of yourself that existed before you started performing a life that wasn’t quite yours.

That’s what healing actually is. A return.

The right conditions.

Like the acorn, what you need isn’t more information. It’s the right environment.

You need space where the noise quiets down. Where fear and doubt and the restless monkey mind get gently moved into the background, not destroyed, just no longer in charge. You need support that doesn’t try to teach you who you are, but helps you remember.

This is what we’re doing with Odyssey Therapeutic Experience.

We’re not installing anything new in you. We’re using the combination of psychedelic medicine and skilled therapy to clear the conditions, to quiet the static, soften the defences, and let the deeper intelligence rise back to the surface where you can hear it again.

The medicine doesn’t give you the answers. It gets you out of the way of the answers you’ve always carried.

Out of the head. Into the heart. Back to the body.

This is the movement.

Out of the looping mind that’s been running the show. Into the heart that’s been waiting to be felt. Back into the body that’s been holding the truth all along.

You already have the potential. You always have.

The seed always knew how to become the tree.

Healing is not a mystery. It’s a method. session is a single event. A weekend. A ceremony. A peak experience you walk into, walk out of, and carry with you forever.

It isn’t.

The experience is the doorway. What happens before, during, and especially after, that’s the actual medicine.

What actually happens in the room.

In an Odyssey Therapeutic Experience, the work begins with intention. You sit with a trained therapist. You arrive with something, grief, depression, a pattern you can’t seem to break, a question you’ve been avoiding.

Then the medicine comes in.

In our case, that medicine is legal ketamine. And what it does, neurologically, is profound: it loosens the grip of the default mode network, quiets the inner critic, and softens the rigid edges of the self you’ve been defending for years.

In that softening, you gain access. To memories you’d buried. To emotions you’d outsourced. To perspectives on your own life that the everyday mind simply can’t reach.

This is the non-ordinary state. And in it, real material surfaces.

The therapist is not optional.

This is where so much DIY psychedelic work falls short.

Without a skilled guide, the experience can feel powerful but goes nowhere. With one, every wave of emotion becomes something you can explore, name, release, and reframe in real time.

Pain becomes information. Information becomes insight. Insight, with the right support, becomes lasting change.

The therapist isn’t there to interpret your experience for you. They’re there to make sure you don’t navigate it alone.

And then comes the part most people skip.

The journey doesn’t end when the medicine wears off.

In fact, that’s where the most important work begins. Integration, the slow, deliberate process of weaving what you discovered back into the fabric of your daily life, is what separates a meaningful experience from a passing one.

This is the part the underground scene often gets wrong. People have a profound session, return to the same job, the same relationship, the same patterns, and wonder why nothing changed.

Without integration, insights fade. With it, they become structural.

We help you take what surfaced and build something with it. New habits. New boundaries. New choices that align with who you actually are. The medicine shows you the map. Integration is how you walk the terrain.

The full arc.

Preparation. Experience. Integration.

Three phases. One process. Done well, this is some of the most powerful psychological work available to a human being right now.

It isn’t a trip. It’s a transformation — and like any real transformation, it takes time, skill, and the courage to actually do something with what you find.

Healing is not a mystery. It’s a method. This is the method.

If someone you know is curious about psychedelic therapy but unsure what it actually involves, share this with them.

The Trojan Horse Is Already Inside the Gates

Psychedelic therapy isn’t coming to Canada. Waiting on regulators. Stuck in trials. Somewhere off in the future, behind a long queue of paperwork and political will.

But here’s what most people don’t know.

It’s already legal. It’s already available. And it’s already working.

Meet ketamine.

You probably know it as an anesthetic, the drug they use before surgery. Clinical. Cold. Not exactly what comes to mind when you think about inner healing.

But in the right setting, with the right intention, ketamine is profoundly psychedelic.

It dissolves the default mode network, the part of the brain responsible for your inner critic, your fixed beliefs, your loops of rumination. In that dissolution, something opens. A spaciousness. A softening of the story you’ve been telling yourself about who you are and what’s possible.

Clinically, it’s approved for treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and PTSD. But what’s happening underneath the clinical language is something more interesting: people are accessing states of consciousness that shift deep patterns. The same patterns that psilocybin, MDMA, and ayahuasca have been shown to move.

The mechanism is different. The door it opens is familiar.

This is the Trojan horse.

Ketamine got in through the medical system, approved, insured, prescribed. And once it was inside, it began doing what all these medicines do: showing people that the mind is far more malleable than we’ve been told. That healing isn’t always linear. That consciousness itself is the frontier.

Every person who sits in a ketamine clinic and comes out different is a data point. Every psychiatrist who watches a patient’s depression lift after years of failed antidepressants is paying attention. Every researcher tracking the mechanisms is seeing what the medicine traditions have known for centuries.

The evidence is accumulating. The culture is shifting.

And what comes next is already in motion.

Health Canada’s Special Access Program has been quietly granting exemptions for psilocybin therapy since 2020. MDMA-assisted therapy trials are underway. The regulatory landscape is moving, slowly, but unmistakably, toward what many in this field have believed for a long time.

These medicines work. Not because they’re magic. Because they’re methodical.

They meet the nervous system where it is. They create conditions for insight, integration, and genuine change. And now, for the first time in modern history, the system is beginning to agree.

The revolution isn’t waiting for permission. It’s already happening in clinics, research centres, and living rooms across this country.

Ketamine opened the door. Others are walking through it.

The healing isn’t a mystery. It’s a method. And the method is becoming medicine.

If this opened your thinking, share it with someone who still thinks this is years away.

The Medicines Don’t Change You

They show you where you need Light. Clarity. A dissolving of the weight you’ve carried for years. You emerge convinced that something fundamental has shifted, that you’ve been healed.

And then, slowly, life returns.

The depression creeps back. Anxiety shows up at work. Anger rises from nowhere in the middle of an ordinary Tuesday. And you start to wonder: did I do something wrong? Did it not work?

You didn’t. It did.

The medicine didn’t fail you. It told you the truth.

Here’s the reframe I keep coming back to: what if we’ve been using the wrong word? We call it healing, but maybe it’s more accurate to call it alignment.

The experience in ceremony, that expansive, luminous state, isn’t a destination. It’s a mirror. A high-resolution scan of your life, showing you precisely where you are living out of alignment with who you actually are.

And then it hands you back to your life. And the work begins.

The medicines speak through your discomfort.

Do you feel extreme anxiety at work? That’s a signal.

Do you feel heavy and sad around family? Signal.

Do you feel chronic anger with your partner? Also a signal.

These aren’t signs that something went wrong after your ceremony. They’re the medicines still working, still turning up the volume on the parts of your life that are asking to be seen, felt, and addressed.

The medicine shows you the map. Walking the terrain is yours to do.

This doesn’t mean blow up your life.

It doesn’t necessarily mean quit your job, cut off your family, or leave your partner.

But it does mean something. It means you’re being asked to stop bypassing what your emotions are trying to tell you.

We’ve been conditioned to treat emotions as inconveniences, things to manage, suppress, medicate away or power through. But emotions aren’t the enemy. They’re data. They’re the language your inner world uses when it needs your attention.

The real post-ceremony work isn’t chasing the next peak experience. It’s developing the willingness to sit with discomfort and ask: what is this trying to show me?

Alignment is an ongoing practice.

Many of us believe the ceremony was the work. That now life will simply be easier.

But what the medicines are pointing at is something quieter and more demanding: a life lived in honest relationship with yourself. Where your work, your relationships, your daily choices are actually in service of who you are, not who you’ve learned to perform.

That’s not a one-weekend shift. That’s a practice.

And the emotions you feel after ceremony, the hard ones, especially, are not setbacks. They’re the method.

Healing is not a mystery. It’s a method. This is one piece of it.

If this resonated, share it with someone who’s been wondering why it’s hard after the ceremony. They need to hear this.

Thanks for reading The Citizen Scientist! revolution is coming from inside.

When the Industrial Revolution took hold, it reshaped the outer world. Steam engines powered factories. Railways connected cities. Entire economies reorganized themselves around a new understanding of energy and production. Life accelerated. Distance shrank. The modern world was born.

But the revolution unfolding now feels different. It isn’t primarily about what we build outside ourselves. It’s about what we discover within.

You could say psychedelics are a kind of new steam engine. Not of industry, but of awareness. Tools that don’t build outward, but open inward. They have the potential to propel us into a new era of human growth and understanding, one where the focus shifts from controlling the external world to understanding the internal one.

And that shift matters.

Because for all our technological progress, we’re still facing the same core human struggles, anxiety, disconnection, meaninglessness, suffering. We’ve optimized the outside, but we’ve barely begun to understand the inside.

As science begins to catch up, through research on psilocybin and other entheogens, we’re starting to see just how much we don’t know. These substances are showing us that the brain is far more flexible, more interconnected, and more dynamic than we once believed.

And that opens the door to bigger questions.

Could our understanding of consciousness reshape how we think about reality itself? About perception, identity, even the nature of existence? It’s not unreasonable to think that as this field develops, it could influence everything from psychology to physics.

Maybe not overnight. But over time.

These experiences aren’t new. They’ve been part of human history for thousands of years, held in ceremony, passed through cultures, described in stories of visions, realizations, and transformation. What’s new is that we’re now trying to understand them through the lens of modern science.

And that creates an interesting tension.

Because the big question still remains:

Are these experiences happening inside us… or are they connecting us to something beyond us?

Science may eventually give us frameworks, models, even evidence. It may help translate these experiences into something the analytical mind can hold onto.

But even then, there may always be something just beyond explanation.

And maybe that’s the point.

Just as steam reshaped the outer world, these tools may reshape the inner one.

Not by giving us all the answers, but by changing the questions we’re willing to ask.

Holistic Healing and Spiritual Realization

There's a process people discover when they begin working with process many people discover when they begin working with psychedelics.

Over time, two gifts tend to emerge. They’re different, but they often walk side by side.

One is holistic healing.
The other is spiritual realization.

Holistic healing is perhaps the easier one to describe. It’s about restoring balance across the many layers of a human life: physical, psychological, emotional, and sometimes spiritual as well.

People often arrive carrying patterns that once helped them survive but now quietly limit how they live. Old stress responses. Protective stories. Emotional wounds that were never fully metabolized.

Healing doesn’t mean erasing those experiences. It means gently unwinding them and coming to peace with them.

Sometimes that looks like releasing grief that has been held in the body for years. Sometimes it means seeing a painful memory from a new perspective. Sometimes it’s simply feeling safe enough, for the first time in a long while, to relax.

Bit by bit, the system begins to recalibrate.

The second path, spiritual realization, is harder to define. And importantly, it isn’t guaranteed, nor does it appear the same way for everyone.

For some people, it arrives as a quiet recognition rather than a dramatic revelation. A sense that the self they’ve been defending so fiercely, the identity built from roles, fears, and expectations, is only one layer of who they are. Beneath it there may be something wider, less rigid. A deeper presence.

People sometimes describe it as realizing they are not only a body, not only a mind, but part of something larger moving through them.

That recognition can shift how life is lived.

When people begin to experience themselves as connected rather than separate, small changes start to ripple outward. Habits soften. Compassion deepens, both toward others and toward oneself. Decisions begin to feel less forced and more aligned with something intuitive.

Not perfect. Just more honest.

What’s interesting is that these two processes, healing and realization, often reinforce each other. As emotional wounds begin to loosen, there is more space for insight. And as insight deepens, it becomes easier to meet the wounded parts of ourselves with patience and grace rather than resistance.

The work moves in both directions.

But in the end, the journey isn’t really about becoming someone new.

It’s about remembering.

Remembering the parts of yourself that were pushed aside. Remembering the capacity for connection that existed before the defences were built. Remembering that beneath the noise of the mind, something steady has always been there.

The medicine doesn’t give you that.

At best, it helps you recognize what was already waiting.
