Tumblr has apparently decided disservice the majority of its users with its new zero tolerance policy for adult content. While I absolutely do not support child abuse, I do stand in solidarity with sex workers, curious minds, and people just generally looking to get their consensual perv on.

(I’m also against any kind of policy that aims its persecution at “female presenting nipples”.)

So with that in mind, while I don’t (at the moment) create work with adult content I’ll likely be leaving Tumblr when the changes go into effect that impact many of the people I admire.

I am dead serious: If you are a Walmart employee, at any level and in any store — like if you are a high school kid with a part time job stocking shelves — message me any question you have about unions. Like ask me “What’s a union” if you want. I will explain it to you.

I am a grievance chair for a white collar union whose workplace only unionized within the last five years and whose management fought as every step of the way, but in the end we fucking won. It can be done, and I can tell you how.

I like how it’s described as a union could “cripple American Capitalism” when more precisely it’s just that a union would be so powerful as to force WalMart (or any other company) to pay their workers like human beings. That’s not going to break Walmart. They’ll barely notice.
They’ve successfully convinced us that the unions are the greedy monsters. For so many years, the companies have painted unions as “we want you to pay janitors three million dollars a year and if you don’t we’ll set your stores on fire”.
But it’s more like “We want you to take an almost imperceptible fraction of your bountiful profits and use it to make your employees’ live marginally better, and maybe give them medical benefits, y’know, so they don’t die”.
Big companies did not stop hiring ten year olds to work in coal mines because they just woke up one day and said “my god, we’re monsters”. They did it because their workers stood together and said “really, enough of this crap”.
Companies are not going to give people raises unless it’s economically necessary that they do so. Anything they can do to lower their expenses, and raise their profits, they are going to do. And no one person can stop them.
But thousands of people, millions of people? Better chances.

September 24 2019 - Thousands of protesters clashed with police at the parliament building in Jakarta. They are protesting corruption, repression of activists and the oppression of west papuans, and proposed changes to the criminal code, which include penalties for sex outside marriage, insulting the president’s dignity, a four-year jail term for abortions in the absence of a medical emergency or rape, and a prison term for black magic. The laws they’re trying to pass infringes on many Indonesian citizens’ rights.

Article 417 punishes extramarital sex (even between two consenting adults) by up to one year in jail or 10 million rupiah in fines.

Article 419 states that couples who live together without being legally married could be sentenced to six months in prison or 10 million in fines.

Article 414 Outlaws the ‘blatant’ displaying, offering, broadcasting, or showing how to obtain contraception to minors. Up to 1 million in fines. The latest draft prohibits anyone except “authorized personnel” from disseminating information about contraception to children, which activists say will curtail attempts to provide sexual education.

Articles 415, 470, and 471 state that only doctors have the right to decide to perform an abortion. This conflicts with the 2009 Health Law, which says a woman can seek an abortion in “a medical emergency,” which could be interpreted to include health reasons or rape. A woman who aborted her pregnancy could be sentenced up to four years in prison. Anyone who helps a pregnant woman have an abortion could be sentenced up to five years in prison.

Article 218, 219 criminalizes ‘attacks on the image’ of the president or vice president being spoken or shared on any media, punishable up to 4.5 years in prison or up to 200 million rupiah in fines.

Article 240, 241 Bans the broadcasting, displaying, posting, or online distribution of writing or pictures that contain ‘insults agains the legitimate government’, punishable up to 4 years imprisonment or 500 million rupiah in fines.

Article 432 Bans homeless and disabled people from being on the streets or other public places for ‘disturbance of public order’, with up to 1 million rupiah in fines.

Article 432 also bans women from being out on the streets at night time for any reason, including work commute and night classes, with up to 1 million rupiah in fines.

This is getting out of hand.

Please help us spread awareness on this! A lot of my friends are out there on the streets, fighting the bills, getting tear gassed. I can’t be there with them, but I can at least do this.

To clarify: the extradition bill has been suspended, and most experts agree it’s all but dead as nobody wants to stir up the hornet’s nest by voting for it. However, most protesters still consider this insufficient, and want the bill fully scrapped. They are also calling for the removal of Carrie Lam and her administration’s leadership as they are still backed and favored by the mainland Chinese government.

They will certainly be out in force on the 12th, and I can’t emphasize enough the quality of the work they do and their devotion to it. The US is refusing to let the UN investigate the concentration camps.

The federal Canadian government is refusing to adopt the UN’s Indigenous Rights ruling. Also refusing to improve housing and provide clean water to all the indigenous people while buying a pipeline that cost a billion more upfront (and upwards of another $10 billion to get it running and deal with legal challenges) that they plan to build on unceded land without consent.

Canada knows how to look better to outsiders, and being next to the US makes it all the easier. People pay attention to a dozen cops pulling guns on a black man walking on the street which is filmed. They don’t pay attention to serial killers targeting indigenous women, forced sterilization with infants being taken away, the suicide outbreaks, the thousands of missing and murdered women, starlight tours, and so much more.

And that’s not saying the US isn’t bad, that’s saying Canada is just as bad it’s just not as “flashy” and targets a group that a lot of people don’t care about. Plenty of Canadians will call others out for using the n-word but the next minute they’ll call indigenous people several slurs and don’t understand how that’s bad and they “aren’t really racist” because they don’t hate black people.

I know Trudeau has a lot of issues but I am really happy about and supportive of the single use plastic ban. I don’t know a lot about politics so I’m probably missing some angles but ultimately I think taking concrete steps to help the environment is the right way to go :)

I’d be more optimistic about the Trudeau government intentions about the plastic ban if not for the following:

1.) The NDP proposed doing this exact thing 3 months ago and nobody in the media even paid any attention. Now suddenly Trudeau is this groundbreaking person for literally stealing NDP policy.

2.) The Liberals stalled an NDP bill calling for this to happen until the bill ran out of time and died.

The Liberals literally prevented what they’re proposing today from happening 3 months ago. How sincere are they that they’ll actually follow through if they’re re-elected?

I agree that this is a good thing, but it feels like cynical politics in an election year and nothing more.
