The Smothering is Back
YouTube let me cut out the track, I’m told it take ages to process videos and whatnot.

The segment now has some emotive music track I spent roughly 30 seconds picking over the top of it. Better than nothing.

The Smothering is a Fan-made episode of Steven Universe; made by fans, for fun because we love the show.
The Smothering is a ‘Mumswap’ story. For those who are unaware Mumswap means a fanfiction where you imagine what Steven Universe would be like if Peridot, Jasper and Lapis were Steven’s caretakers instead of Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl.
They’re used to explore the personalities of the characters in a different setting.
Hey guys my episode’s almost out.
Do you remember when it looked like this?

Is there a torrent of the original The Smothering? Or a vimeo?
I put it up on my Google Docs.
The full length SU fan episode is finally here! It’s taken a while and we’re so glad you stuck with us ‘till the end. We really hope you enjoy the episode.
Episode’s finished.
‘Phew’, that took a while.
All of the roughs of the Smothering are finished.
The remainder of the work is polishing all of the images, editing the images into a video file and adding audio.
I’m not so sure how long that will take, but hopefully it won’t be too long now that the vast majority of the work is done.
As far as colouring goes I’m considering a few different options.
Full colour might be too much of an investment. I don’t want to burn out half way through or end up adding another 6-8 months to the release date.
No colour might be a little sad. I do want it to look nice.
I’m going to try out a few different things but currently I’m considering block colours for the characters and backgrounds along with simple shading where necessary.
So this is the shot directly after the shot which ends the test footage. Steven and the Gems have just warped into their first mission with Steven.
Steven’s excited and Jasper looks down at him smiling, enjoying seeing him happy. Lapis looks outward and her stance is more open, she’s focused on moving as soon as possible.
Peridot meanwhile is tense and nervous, looking around for anything that could pose a threat to Steven. She’s also cradling something.
After I drew the lineart for this rough I moved on, but upon glancing back over it I noticed a few issues. I wasn’t happy with Jasper’s face and Lapis had some weird proportions going on. Steven and Peridot were fine, but I changed the other two. A friend also pointed out that jasper doesn’t have a crotch. Initially I avoided drawing the line where her crotch would be because it would look messy behind Steven’s silhouette, but she looks much more correct with the addition of the line.
Even after making this update post I see things I want to fiddle with. perhaps I’m too much of a perfectionist to make over a 1000 images look good.
I’m going to ask for help colouring The Smothering soon. So stay posted if you’re interested. It’ll really help us out.
Progress report: Roughs and Line-art
Some of my old roughs are pretty terrible; I got a lot better at drawing the characters as I went on.
While my later roughs are really nice, and require little more than a mild polish to be used, my early ones are mostly crap and need to be redrawn. Sometimes completely, as we see with Jasper’s curiously flat face in example three. Usually I’ll repose a shot if I don’t think it fits well enough, like here where Lapis is surprised at Peridot’s outburst, now she merely finds it tiresome
Progress will be faster the further ahead I get in the roughs.
Hope you all enjoy it.
I’m sure you’re all invested in what I’m doing and whether it’s about Surge.
Rest assured I’m writing a really long video about Tower Defenses.
