im trying to get back into researching things im interested in so im reading this paper on fungal endophytes and WHOAHHHH this is so cool

So, in addition to mycorrhizal fungi, basically all plants have fungi that live completely inside them that are symbiotic with them and confer various benefits to the plant. And it's WILD

Some highlights of this paper

  • in a tropical forest, trees can have dozens of fungi species living inside a SINGLE LEAF, and different leaves on the same tree can have completely different fungi
  • Some endophytic fungi can switch to free-living lifestyles without a host?? they evolved to grow symbiotically inside another organism but they can just decide to live by themselves no problem???
  • endophytic fungi in grasses cause Effects on animals that eat them. for example there is a grass called sleepygrass that makes horses that eat it sleep for 3 days. A similar grass with a similar symbiont is called drunken horse grass and grows in Asia
  • Dichanthelium lanuginosum, a plant that grows near super hot geothermal pools, is inhabited by Curvularia protuberata in all its tissues. By themselves, neither plant nor fungus can survive heat of more than 40C, but when in symbiosis, they survive up to 65C
