Ice cold takes from a Transgender Woman:
- Not all Men are evil
- Everyone has the capacity for evil
- Transgender Men are men
- Transgender Women are women
- Excluding Cisgender Men from your spaces requires Transgender Men to out themselves if they want to engage (Same for Women)

the captives in west germany, in east germany they were freed
east germany and west germany didn’t exist til several years after the war, and once east germany did exist only a small amount of those particular prisoners were released before their terms were otherwise up. (similarly a small number in what became west germany also were released early). so no there was no special soviet occupation zone leniency to people imprisoned in the camps for homosexuality compared to in the american, british, or french zones of occupation (similarly there was no difference between the occupation zones in Austria on this topic)
east german general enforcement of laws against homosexuality did not end until 1957 and there was no formal decriminalization until 1968 there. similarly gradual de-enforcement of laws against homosexuality in west germany started in the late 50s and the first formal wave of decriminalization came in 1969 (with disjoint age of consent of both partners for gay sex being over 21, as compared to 14 for heterosexual sex at the time).
when i refer to enforcement of laws here, I mean that just being gay stopped being something that get you sent to jail just on its own, but in the period between general enforcement ending and actual levels of decriminalization occurring, many people in both Germanies were still getting charged with it as a crime if they were also getting caught and charged for some other crime - including relatively minor ones. It’s basically the same thing that happened in all sorts of other European countries in similar timeframes.
there’s also some other peculiarities here which is that much more of the Nazi system of camps were present in the subsequent Soviet occupation areas than in what became West Germany, because that Soviet occupation area covered many whole countries! so there will be greater numerical amount of people released early from any of the other things that were still very much crimes in post war poland, czechoslovakia, etc from the sheer greater numbers of prisoners of all types.
and we also must remember that the Soviet Union itself had recriminalized homosexuality in its borders in the mid-1930s and would continue this policy with heavy enforcement into the late 50s, with it taking until the early 70s to really start cutting back on official policy against homosexuality. so they weren’t exactly excited to preach gay liberation in the soviet zone of occupation either!
You kill your birds? I thought you loved animals...
I do love animals. I breed quail for meat and eggs, and that means that yes, I kill some of my birds, just as I kill some of my mice who are unsuitable for pet homes or unnecessary for breeding, just as I have sent overtly aggressive peafowl that would be dangerous to other birds or humans home with someone to be dinner.
Loving animals and understanding meat source animals must be killed to be eaten and that domesticated husbandry requires some amount of hard culling for the benefit of the breeding program and species as a whole are not mutually exclusive ideas. It is my job to give my animals good, proper care, enrichment, and love until their time in this world is over (for some that’s sooner than others), to ensure that death is as humane as possible, and to ensure that as little as possible goes to waste after.
And almost nothing here does go to waste; offal or unusable parts goes to the crows and other scavengers I feed at the front of the house (and in turn they chase off nosy hawks and eagles), meat gets eaten, bones get used to make stock and then composted for the garden. Mouse culls and quail feeder culls (quail hatched specifically to be feeders for other animals) almost all go to reptile owners who want ethically sourced animals kept in better conditions/fed better feed (the exception is when Bug eats some of them instead). And the two times I have ever had to cull aggressive peafowl, they both went to a hunting family that made use of the meat.
Additionally, on several occasions now, I have been called upon by others to help euthanize their fowl friends. Strangers who couldn’t afford a vet bill but wanted to put an end to their bird’s suffering. Strangers that knew it needed to be done but couldn’t do it themselves, or that didn’t know how. I have taught others how to do cervical dislocation in case the need arrives ever again, so the bird doesn’t have to wait. I have held sobbing owners who thanked me for being able to do what they couldn’t even when they knew it was necessary. And yes, I have demonstrated the butchering process to folks who want quail meat, so that I know they’re giving a quick, humane end to their birds.
Death is a part of life. When you raise purpose animals, death is going to be a part of the deal at some point.
It doesn’t mean I love them any less while they’re here, or in general.

Mahmoud Khalil calling the issue of campus antisemitism “manufactured mass hysteria” reminds me of this something that really stuck with me from the second report from the Columbia antisemitism task force:
In some cases, students relayed that when they complained about antisemitism, some school
administrators tried to steer them to mental health counseling. One student reported, “I tried to reach out to the school but they made me meet with the school social worker before I could meet
with the Dean of Student Affairs.” While mental health services should be available to anyone
who wants or needs them, administrators should not medicalize a student experience of
discrimination in lieu of addressing it. (Page 32)There is this prevalent and unshakeable idea that antisemitism is all in the Jews’ heads, that the issue is really the Jewish inability to cope. That if someone thinks they’ve experienced antisemitism there is something wrong with their head.
To “yes, and…” this, I have to wonder if… no, not if, I wonder how this ties into the extremely prevalent excuse where people committing antisemitic attacks and crimes are dismissed as having mental illness. To list a few examples:
“Mentally ill”
“Mentally ill”
And, of course…
“Kanye’s just having a mental health crisis!”
And most egregiously of all…
“I’m not responsible for killing an old Jewish woman because I was high.”
So I have to wonder–how do these two factors tie together? Where Jews are viewed as being mentally ill for saying they experience antisemitism, and people who act on their Jew-hate being medicalized as mentally ill?
Btw trying to convince Jewish students they’re afraid because there’s something wrong with their mental health is textbook gaslighting.
You are trying to trick the victim into doubting their own perception of reality and discredit them as mentally unstable in front of a wider audience.
We can read the statistics. Stop lying.

I understand the “I will die for you” ship dynamic, but what about the “I will not let you die, I will not let myself die- we will, at any cost, survive” kind of couple?
hey we wanna re-think this at all or

gehe-lihiyot-androgynos-varda:
I generally think resorting to targeting a person’s religion, ethnicity, race, gender, disability etc… shows a lack of character and imagination, no matter how powerful the group or individual you’re taking umbrage with.
These things are low hanging fruit, you superficially feel better but you didn’t actually make a point.
It’s more important to be ethically consistent and demonstrate your values, than it is to bang out a zinger at nameless internet goober of the day.
