Of Surnames & Mandalorians
So I have no clue if this has already been posited, but I have a working theory as to why Grogu is now Din Grogu and not Grogu Djarin.
As we know Din Djarin was born in a village in Aq Vetina but grew up on Concordia, where his family had taken refuge. Based on the clip we've seen, he was around 7-9, at the time of the Great Purge of Mandalore and that his name was registered in the database. Upon losing his family, he is adopted by the Children of the Watch. We also know that the Mandalorians assimilate elements of other cultures into their own.
Therefore it is possible that Din Djarin comes from a culture, where the surname comes before the first name (as it is in Korean and Chinese cultures). Given his age and likely level of awareness at the time of the attack on Concordia, the Watch adopted him as is and didn't give him a new identity. Acceptance is part of their creed. So while the Mandalorians use the first name-surname order, it doesn't mean they would erase Din Djarin's past or give him a new name.
Since Din Djarin is the one who has adopted Grogu, it stands to reason that they are continuing the cultural practices of Din Djarin's home world.
