If nothing else, as a historian every time I get scared at the state of the world I have to remind myself that "uninteresting times" is a myth.
The world has always been in the throes of chaos and violence and fear, just in different ways and to different degrees. The anxieties of the past are no less real than our own, and we can learn from them. Normality and peace are fleeting, but we can always strive to increase those moments. We have to keep hoping and working for a better future. It's all we have. We may not succeed, but if we don't try, what are we living for?
A rare white piqué cotton pregnancy jacket, French, 1810-13
The wide collar with frilled edge, gathers to shoulder seams with drawstring at centre back waist, underarm gussets, triangular gores to side seams, bust approx 82cm, 32in; together with an associated under-dress of modern white cotton; applied with early 19th century muslin woven with sage green sprig repeats (an altered directoire period dress originally); together with a square wool shawl, French 1825-35, with botehs down one border only; a goffered double-layer collar with vandyke hem; and a leno gauze cap with whitework sprigs and tulle frill to front, long ties.
