okay, so it’s bothering me a little how a lot of people are talking about ryan’s acting, and i wanted to give my two cents on it.
for me, it’s pretty clear where ryan is going with his acting choices, especially after what he said on the podcast. but for some reason, people are acting as if eddie’s lack of emotion is just ryan being a bad actor. i might agree with that in other scenarios, but this time? no. i’d say that even though his performance isn’t oscar-worthy, he’s still doing a great job portraying what’s happening with eddie.
which is: he’s repressing the hell out of his feelings.
and we can see that—there are a few instances where his mask slips.
when he learns that buck is going to sublet his house, he can’t keep his emotions at bay. in my opinion, he realizes in that moment that he has someone who genuinely loves him and would do anything for him, which just makes things even harder. so, he tries to repress his feelings even more.
when buck brings up the subject of him moving again while they’re searching for maddie, his façade almost slips when he says, “it isn’t nothing.” but again, he pushes his feelings down. it’s obvious he’s exhausted from thinking about it and fighting about it with buck.
and finally, when they say goodbye, ryan does something so subtle that if you blink, you’d miss it—eddie’s smile falters just a little, and his eyebrow twitches while they’re hugging.
so yeah, it’s obvious that eddie is going through it and trying his hardest to keep his feelings locked away. to really understand eddie right now, it’s important to keep in mind what ryan said in that podcast about reading between the lines—and also remember that while buck is really expressive with his feelings, eddie is the complete opposite.

Personally, I think Buck’s realization moment should be during their roommate era. Him, Chris, and Eddie are all at the table eating dinner. Chris and Eddie are yapping about their days or what have you, and Buck thinks that he never wants this to end. I think that that will be his little ~~(big)~~ moment, his oh moment, and he’ll panic about it because Eddie is his best friend and he can’t lose him!!

On the opposite end, I think Eddie’s realization moment should be when he’s still in Texas. He can’t stop talking about Buck, and finally someone (maybe one of his sisters, maybe Pepa) is like “it’s so nice to see you in love” and something just. Clicks in his brain, like everything finally makes sense. And he smiles about it because, yeah, he is in love with Buck

friendly and loving reminder for any fic writers unfamiliar w the American southwest: El Paso is not the verdant, lush and woodsy entirement a lot of fics depict. it’s the desert, it’s dry and hot and the only things that grow out there are cacti, palm trees, a solid handful of dead-looking but native brush, and the forcibly planted flora from other climates that really shouldn’t be there but alas. it’s not gonna look anything like places that get actual rain on a regular basis. grass? only exists on golf courses or VERY dedicated lawns. otherwise if its there it’s in a constant drawn out anime death scene, withering before your very eyes. you only see green when it’s recently rained and itll be back to brown in a week.
this isn’t to say that the desert doesn’t have it’s own beauty and charm, but esp in this part of Texas there isn’t going to be a ton of ponds and lakes around Eddie’s house.
to better depict what I mean:
this is what a lot of folks describe the world looking like around eddies house
this is a more accurate portrayal of the neighborhood his parents would live in. his new house might be a bit less suburb since he seems to have more land around the house so he’s further from civilization

this is the major city of el paso vs the nice hiking trails you’ll find in the mountains

plenty of plant and wildlife, but very different from the forests and green hills of more northern parts of Texas.
And additional note: LA isn’t too different from this, except it is greener w way more hills and yknow. the ocean.
Hopefully this is taken as a helpful reference and not a criticism! and ofc you can always ignore this and rewrite geography to suit the narrative. its ur fic write whatever the hell u want ur enjoyment is what matters

considering the poker date and 704 happened maybe four months apart I’m starting a (true) rumor that Buck’s feeling realization started happening after the date -> he tried with natalia but realized he really wasn’t feeling it and actually he would much rather hang out with eddie anyway (go cart date that never was my beloved) -> his feelings for eddie were rising to the surface, he was getting butterflies and becoming even more obsessed with him than usual (literally all of his behavior 701-704) -> until it all blew up with the basketball scene and tommy kissing him. in conclusion, it was his actual first date with a man that set off his realization about his bisexuality
