naturally-naive asked:

I think it makes perfect sense to include joke characters! With people's tendency to make initially silly things serious and vice versa, it's nigh impossible to distinguish a joke character from a serious character, especially in a fun, lighthearted series like Mario. The only reliable way would be self-selection during the submission process, and that seems like the type of thing people would lie about, or get confused over.

janmisali answered:

right like even if I thought the bracket having “joke characters” was in any way an undesirable quality (all of this is just for fun so excluding some characters for being the “wrong kind” of fun feels like a horrible way to go about it), excluding joke nominations is just not something that can be done practically. I’d either need to make people self-report if they’re doing a joke (would not work), politely request that people not do jokes (would not work), or manually exclude characters that I think are probably jokes (and who am I to be the judge of that.)

The thing is you could very reasonably argue that people submit characters like Waluigi or even Luigi for “joke” reasons, like part of why people love those characters so much is that they are funny and offbeat characters that are fun to rep for! If you were literally first finding out about the Mario franchise, the idea of Luigi being someones favorite character might be kinda funny to you at first, then when you learn more about it you might find the idea of picking Waluigi or Wiggler or Lanky Kong or Boshi to seem silly in a similar way, why stop this logic from extending all the way to Plato or Big Bertha or George Washingtoad, they are all Mario characters after all! Them being more obscure might make them seem more silly in comparison to Waluigi, but we all love Waluigi cause he’s a silly fun guy who it’s funny to talk about. There’s no real way to draw the line here, so it’s only fair to let everyone have a shot.
