As a former librarian I'm actually required to remind you that many libraries that subscribe to Libby are opted into a program that lets you subscribe and access magazines for free with no wait

And that this is actually a really fun, low cost way to not only access news and larger cultural magazines, but also to get free patterns for many different crafts that you can screenshot if need be and that lower the financial barriers to entry for trying new things

From my experience working in both academic and public libraries, many libraries are use it or lose it funding-- I have to say this because a lot of patrons feel guilty for how much they use the library and how often they're using it funny enough, but the worst thing you can do for libraries is not try out new features and not use what's already given to you as much as possible.

The numbers that come as a result of your patronage are how most libraries justify their continued existence in times of financial hardship, which sucks but, go check out some magazines on Libby!

for a website who talks about reading comprehension so much, no one has any idea what its like for animal videos. so here you go, sincerely im tired of your fucking bullshit.

1. are they applying human emotions to animals, and especially bugs? (ie, my spider/mantis/millipede wants uppies!, this coyote is smiling / showing affection in x way that humans do!, this reptile loves cuddles! (and the reptile is hissing, arching their back, etc etc, or is being anthropomorphized in any way or being held unstably?)
2. is the source actually good? cmon guys we learned this back in fucking middle school. is it a rehab? are they petting rehab animals / zoo animals etc? is this by an official account or a member of the public? check whether theyre an AZA accredited source here.
3. does the space theyre in look large and relatively clean? are they in a house? (generally a bad thing) are there stacks upon stacks of enclosures for huge reptiles? are the snakes in bins? etc
4. IS IT AI. do the babies look identical to the parents. is it smooth. please
5. are the clips different areas? does it seem like a video of animals showing "gratitude" (ie "otter brings a shell to human who saved her baby" (that video was 2 sp of otter btw))
6. is the animal domesticated / in the pet trade? or is it largely wild? (ie, otters, mustelids other than ferrets, komodos, etc)

It took me forever to work on in short bursts while still injured, but sometimes and idea just sinks its teeth into you and won't let go. 🦁

If the only valid queer rep is explicit queer rep, that's a huge problem. There are lots of old books that simply could not include explicit rep. There are lots of new books that it wouldn't make sense for the rep to be explicit. There are a lots of settings where they're not going to take a moment and go "by the way, I'm bi, not gay."

There has to be room for subtextual and interpretative queerness, even when discussing a canon where queerness is never acknowledged as existing.

There also has to be room for people to disagree with those interpretations, and of course some interpretations will be more supportable, canonically, than others, and sometimes we simply won't be able to say "this character is that rep (as opposed to some other rep)" conclusively.

There has to be space in our readings of books to be comfortable with this ambiguity, and there has to be a minimum good-faith acceptance that if someone says "that book was queer to me," even if the book isn't explicit queer and doesn't read queer to someone else... that doesn't change the nature of the queerness.

Some of y'all really need to accept that there's not only one way to read a book, and there never will be, and that's okay.

Historical context is of course very useful for important things like Politics and Science and everything, but will also open your eyes to things like, uh... the way the clothing/textile/crafting industries try to use the word "natural" as an excuse to sell shoddy and bad quality goods and make you think that's normal.

God knows there are worse things going on in the world, but it really pisses me off when I see companies advertising "Real Shell/Pearl buttons!" like that's supposed to be some upscale selling point, and the buttons in question are the thinnest, roughest, most crudely-made buttons in existence... 🙄😒 "But they're made from Natural Materials! You can't expect Natural Materials to look refined and consistent like synthetic ones!" They are lying to you. THEY ARE LYING TO YOU! And I know this because I've seen "real shell buttons" from 100 or even 50 years ago. And most of them are sturdy and smoothly polished, of a consistent thickness, and sometimes even finely carved. The buttons on nice men's dress shirts? Those are the cheap, plastic IMITATIONS of what people expected actual mother-of-pearl buttons to look like! "Natural" isn't an excuse! Your product is cheap and badly and lazily made! And I'm so sick of this, because I see it EVERYWHERE. "Linen-look" has become shorthand for "coarsely woven fabric with visible slubs" and that drives me CRAZY because do you KNOW what kinds of linen I have seen??? Antique linen so light and fine and smooth you can't even SEE the weave unless you magnify it!!! A fragment of a linen damask tablecloth so smooth and glossy, it looks like SILK? 😭 (On that note, "dupioni silk" is so roughly woven that it would have been considered hardly fit to sell a century ago) "This fabric is woven of Natural Materials, so imperfections will be inevitable!" 🙃 No! 😀 You just made it cheaply and sloppily, and that was your choice! 😊

also "handspun" does not need to mean rough and uneven. It can be very fine and even and frankly historically (where people had MASSIVE amounts of practice at it, and also it is ALL THERE WAS! (see linen so fine you can't see the weave in above post) people would not have accepted the shit we get today!

(My personal hate boner for the fact that I cannot even find an online source where I can be sure they're selling actual high quality fabrics.)

May i profer up the following sources that my historical costuming buddies like to use (forgive me if you already know these). Most of these are just natural fibers and/or historical designs around the 1800's, but yeah...

I'm not importing anything from the USA under current conditions, but that looks like some lovely stuff!

My personal pet pieve though is the fabric quality itself, beyond "just" fibre content. But I don't have any experience with the above sources!

My "favourite" anecdote for this is that when they were making Phrine Fisher's costumes (in Australia) they had to import Kimono fabrics from Japan to get the fabric quality you'd expect for a rich fashionable lady from the 1920s...
