Bottom surgeries for trans people are done with the intent to maintain function and sensation in line with what the individual wants, they are functional just as much as they are cosmetic.

IGM on the other hand is purely cosmetic. It is done for the comfort of the parents due to the violent biases against intersex people sterily written into medical protocols. Visibly intersex genitalia is seen as already being faulty and disgusting; therefore anything done to change it would be an improvement, regardless of the side effects.

I need you to understand how they speak about what they do to us.

I'm 20 years old and I'm new to official queer activism. I'm young. I'm uneducated about the medical field, something which deeply fascinates me. I have a deep respect for doctors and what they do. But I know this is wrong. I know this is wrong. I know this is wrong. I wish the world would listen.

"...leads to great distress in the family" Pause. Why do the family matter?

"It is not a medical problem" Pause. Then why is it an issue?

Because perisex people's feelings matter more than intersex people's rights to keep our organs inside our bodies and our flesh intact.

I can understand why, so I'd like to explain.

In cases of ambiguous genitalia, these surgeries are required to issue a legally recognized birth certificate. Everyone must be sorted into M or F.

The thought of just.. not assigning a sex to a child & thus violating the sex binary, is more horrific to perisex cis people than the thought of literally mutilating that child.

This is what the core of medical intersexism is. An unwillingness to question the social construct of binary sex categorization.

This is also what it's like doing research into intersex issues, as an intersex person. We see constant shit like this, and constant photos and accounts of child abuse, molestation, and rape. This is why I cannot fucking cope with doing this research much anymore. It's exhausting. It's hurtful knowing my own clit was trimmed down for no other reason than to be less horrifying to my mother, who never developed a bond with me and told me I was born wrong and abused me for 20 years until I bounced. This is why I break down when any of my posts blow up and people start demanding more info or asking questions that imply shit I never said. It's exhausting doing this and living like this.

It's important for perisex people to learn about and contextualize what we do to intersex children the moment they're born, and reading this post helped me with some of that contextualization. The way that case report is phrased is almost exactly like what I've seen of conversion therapy for other groups. The focus is placed on "normalization" and making it so the people around the "abnormal" person don't have to think about said "abnormality" ever again.

Conversion therapy for your gay son so he marries a woman and continues the family bloodline in a traditional way and you don't wonder about his feelings or personhood until he dies -- probably by his own hand. Conversion therapy for your trans daughter, so she functions as a traditional man in society and you don't wonder what her real name is or when you last saw her smile until she's dead. Conversion therapy for your autistic kid, even, (called ABA therapy) so they grow up quiet and shut down and isolated but not "weird" or "different" in any way the mask doesn't cover. Conversion therapy for your intersex kid from birth. From the moment they take their first breath. From the hospital they're born in, before they even have the context to process the trauma of what's happening to them -- and the trauma WILL come later no matter how much you tell yourself it won't be a problem for your healthy and understanding family.

Imagine starting conversion therapy from the day you're born, and being told your whole life that you have to align with conversion therapy values, and when other people rightfully decry conversion therapy for adults you feel like you're in a twilight zone where nobody knows you exist. You've gone through the same thing, just earlier and from an even more vulnerable position than an adult who was forced after an intervention meeting. Other people are fighting for their right to bodily autonomy and self-determinism, and you're already starting behind the conversion therapy lines. You're behind and it seems like nobody will glance back and notice you, nobody will offer a hand to help you forward so you can move past the conversion therapy stage and fight for the rights everyone else is demanding for themselves.

Granted, I don't know the intersex experience of this firsthand. I'm trans and queer and autistic, but I've never gone through conversion therapy for any of those things -- only come close to ABA and recoiled in horror when I realized what it was. But you don't have to be the same as another person or have the same experiences to know they deserve rights. The "normalization" of intersex people from birth is not intersex people having rights. We need to do better. We need to fight so intersex people can have it better. Nobody deserves to go through non-consensual surgical alteration, and definitely not as part of a life-long conversion therapy process. Everyone deserves to choose how we do or do not alter our bodies, surgically or otherwise, on our own terms. Without our choices pre-made for us, without aesthetics prioritized over health to pre-make those choices, and without shame or stigma for either trans or intersex people regardless of what we choose to do with our bodies.

Mohammed is planning to distribute food parcels, each containing one liter of vegetable oil, one kilo of sugar, one kilo of rice, one kilo of lentils, one kilo of pasta, and a can of sauce, to the 70+ families in Mawasi Al-Qarara camp later this week.

Even worse, it seems that in Gaza, when it rains, it pours. Both literally and metaphorically. The cold of winter hand in hand with starvation and continuous relentless bombardment make people wish for fast death that would relieve them from this pain and suffering.

My family like families in Gaza get killed a thousand times each day with the horrific conditions they live in and the fear of getting killed in an airstrike every minute of every day. Today was an incredibly horrible and bloody day in Gaza. Many shocking massacres were committed by the cruel Israeli army across the Gaza Strip wiping off entire families. Innocent women and children were burned alive. This is the kind of place Gaza has turned into, a place of death and destruction. There is not life in Gaza.

I watch the news while I am too far away and I am filled with fear and agony. What if my family is the next to leave?! that is what I am constantly wondering and it drives me crazy!

There are hopes that the Rafah crossing will open soon. My family needs to be ready to evacuate when this happens.

I contemplate the happy faces of people around me here in Ireland and reminisce about the happy normal life my family and I had before the war. A life that turned into a distant memory for us and was replaced by an unending series of horrible nightmares.

Unlike my family in Gaza, people here have access to drinking water, all types of food, electricity, and a roof over their heads. Above all, they are safe, and I cannot help but wonder if they genuinely do appreciate these blessings in their lives enough.

People seem relaxed and laughing wholeheartedly around me in Ireland. I wish I could laugh too, but I am crushed way beyond recovery on the inside. I was evacuated by my Irish college after five months of living the horrors of war in Gaza. I hope you will never know what it feels like to live in constant fear and worry and be horrified by the most sickening and scary nightmares every single night while you are far away from your family in such circumstances.

When did my people in Gaza cease to be human beings worthy and deserving of a normal life? Has it become normal now for my family in Gaza to be starved and killed while the whole world is watching the genocide? If that is the case, then you will have to excuse me if I seek every avenue to bring them to Ireland and start a new normal life like all people here around me.

I was assured by the Irish Reugee Council (IRC) and lawyers in Ireland that there is hope I can reunite with my family in Ireland. In difficult times, it is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. For me and my family, you are literally our light and hope for a better life.

My family in Gaza crave normal food. Making bread from stale bad flour has become the norm!

Even worse, it seems that in Gaza, when it rains, it pours. Both literally and metaphorically. The cold of winter hand in hand with starvation and continuous relentless bombardment make people wish for fast death that would relieve them from this pain and suffering.

My family like families in Gaza get killed a thousand times each day with the horrific conditions they live in and the fear of getting killed in an airstrike every minute of every day. Can you imagine what that is like? Help yourself and take a look at what my family and people in tents and makeshift shelters wake up to every day.

Today was an incredibly horrible and bloody day in Gaza. Many shocking massacres were committed by the cruel Israeli army across the Gaza Strip wiping off entire families. Innocent women and children were burned alive. This is the kind of place Gaza has turned into, a place of death and destruction. There is not life in Gaza.

I watch the news while I am too far away and I am filled with fear and agony. What if my family is the next to leave?! that is what I am constantly wondering and it drives me crazy!

There are hopes that the Rafah crossing will open soon. My family needs to be ready to evacuate when this happens.
