This week's #zine #review is of "Electronic Organisms User's Manual Issue 1" by teratogenic on itch.io!
Lately I've been thinking about artificial life. The AI hype interests me because it's trying to capture the fun of artificial intelligence in science fiction while being mundane exploitation of human life. This zine, set in a sci-fi dystopia, illustrates that. The birth of a new life comes not with joy, but with the corporate eye looking for new resources. It's a fun, short zine.

Title: never.
Author: Keet Geniza of makeshiftlove
Review:
I’m surprised I don’t have more fiction zines. I’ve got some poetry zines and art zines, but only a few story zines. Earlier this year I posted a review of a small magazine, which is technically not a zine but I think it’s close enough. I wish I could read more fiction. It’s so hard to sit down and focus.
This is a short story about Mara, an art student in Manila. I really like this one. The author’s voice is inviting. The use of imagery and detail (“sweating water pitcher,” “her fingertips were sharply cold”) was excellent. I’d like to read more from this author.
The zine is printed on pink paper. The text is clear and readable. Please read it if you get the chance!

Title: A Queer Summary of Flowers
Author: Dairy
Review:
The first thing I noticed when opening this zine is that the author put the open side on top, which is rare with this minizine format. I don’t think there was any meaning to this… but given the content of the zine, maybe it was intentional, to show something noticeably different yet still good.
When I bought the zine, I’d thought the flowers listed would be more of the author’s personal symbols. It’s actually about flowers that have historically been used by LGBT people to identify themselves. (Non-binary individuals are represented in the list.) It was cool to learn something new here!

This little minor event has been weighing on my thoughts recently, thought l'd make a zine to process and move on! "High femme holy day" has been so memed and removed from context I thought it'd be worth revisiting the sweet and funny scene and talking about why valentine's day is so special to myself and many other femme4butches.
While this zine takes the jumping off point of someone saying something I disagree with, this isn't really a call out. l've blacked out in front of a crowd on a microphone and said some dumb shit too. But I said it in the zine and I'll say it again: there is no high femme holy holiday without butches
This zine is available as a free printable on my ko-fi
