john oliver watch out
One day, my mother’s going to walk out listening to a clip of John Oliver being delightfully bamboozled by a Monsters Inc fic, and I will be compelled to inform her,
“I know the person that sent him that. I know the person who wrote that.”
i super don’t want to get my hopes up too much but i mean he did an entire segment on somebody trying to AI generate pics of him marrying a cabbage so if my lovingly handcrafted monsters inc erotica featuring john oliver goes unnoticed…
Imagine your rich dumbass parents got scammed out of a ridiculous amount of money because they believed that determining how a bunch of cells would likely score on an “intelligence” test or which hobbies it would be good at once it’s grown into a human child was real and possible, and then they’d hate you for not being be a genius. I think these kids should be legally allowed to kill their parents.
M*A*S*H | 3.05 - “O.R.”
I think younger generations need to rediscover MASH. Yeah there are ‘problematic’ episodes and humor. It was made in the 70’s and early 80’s. There was WAY WORSE on.
It’s also about telling authority to fuck off, surviving hell, doing your best in the situation you’re in, and forgiving yourself when you can’t.
They did a whole episode about getting a gay soldier honorably discharged before his unit beat him up, again. IN THE 70’S!
This episode, O.R. came after the network told them to have fewer scenes with surgery and injury. They turned around and did an entire episode in the O.R.
There is a moment when the camp priest is describing to a reporter how on cold days the surgeons will take a second to warm their hands on the steam from open wounds and if you don’t cry just from the performance in that scene I don’t know what to say.
Another character in that same episode comments how he used to love Hemingway, until he actually went to war.
There are things in it that wouldn’t get into tv today for good reasons but also things that probably wouldn’t get in for the wrong reasons. There’s a scene where the camp is moving and mail is getting passed up the line of trucks. The C.O. offers to read the letter for the company clerk who is driving. He’s told he wouldn’t understand it because it’s in Arabic. The C.O. looks at it and comments how “it’s a right pretty language”.
Watch MASH. Even the really cringy season one and two episodes. Watch it without the laugh track, let it show you how to be strong while it breaks your heart.
I believe in the power of building a community and protecting safe havens, and in the power of being yourself when everyone wants you to be someone else. Some people would say that this isn’t enough to call it activism, but I disagree.
This was an interesting read. Surprisingly nonpreachy given the subject; and well worth the time.
This is oaywalled but it made me weep with relief to see an honest recounting for once, so I’ve saved some good bits:
He’s also not wrong about that last part. Or any of the other parts, but especially that last part.
There are of course potential genuine fanatics, the people so batshit they don’t care - but they were already a risk and they were already looking to find people like him, so the risk with them remains stable.
What’s important is that we know about him.
the secret to life is always having something to look forward to
to anyone saying there’s nothing to look forward to, I’m not saying it has to be anything spectacular or huge. it could just be a song or a book that will release in a few days, a tv show, anything!! no matter how small it seems it can keep us going
Quick! Put in the tags what you’re looking forward to right now!
I’ll go first: Im gonna go out to try a new restaurant this week with a friend!!
i was at a little park fest thing today and someone was there with their cats who were trained to hang out in a stroller?? like they were SO chill it was amazing. the cats were obviously enjoying themselves and were very well trained to stay right in or under their catmobile.
until, that is, i rolled up in my wheelchair and one of them turned and saw my vaguely stroller-like contraption and *immediately* jumped out of his cat-approved-stroller to climb around on my chair like OH WOW WHEN DID WE GET ANOTHER WHEELEY THING YAY! :D
i was like sir you are not supposed to be here and he just looked up at me like oh yes i am ! i must stay in wheeled contraption !!! and he was wearing a lil bowtie so i could not argue with him
[id: the Is This a Bird meme edited so that a stock photo of a gray tabby cat with a bowtie is the one gesturing at the It’s Free Real Estate meme that has a disability symbol of a person in a wheelchair edited on to it. end id]
