I still canāt see why marvel wants me to sympathic for wanda being sad over losing her AI kids that she barely knew for upwards of a weekā¦.
I mean the funny thing about her being so obsessed with finding āher kidsā (that werenāt even real) is that, even when she was living her little fantasy land life in Westviewā¦ she wasnāt actively being a mother.
Like she wasnāt taking care of them, raising them, getting them up in the morning, cooking them meals, driving them to school, etc etc. She was spending a few minutes with them at a time and then magic-ing them away when she didnāt want them in the scene. When they had needs (crying etc) sheād just wave her hand and alter reality to make them stop crying (not actually try to fix it like a real parent would).
My point is, she goes on and on about how important being a mother is to her, but sheās never been a mother. She was a spell-casting director overseeing a stage production that had a few scenes with kids in it. Her searching the multiverse for her children is ridiculous considering she never had children, just characters in her sitcom. That whole Westview situation wasnāt her parenting, she was essentially just playing with sims characters. Ugh.
I am a mother and thisā¦ just all of this.
Wandaās children were a tool, a part of the illusion she was using like a drug to escape her pain. At best she is deeply mentally unwell and fixating on dreams of a life she never lived.
The memes are true. Motherhood is poop and vomit and doing so much for another person. No, it doesnāt stop being full of the unpleasant body fluids when they are potty trained or in school. Yes, it is worth it, but it is nothing at all like what Wanda is doing in WandaVision. She throws the kids at Agnes or Monica when they are being difficult.
Now, Iāve been sick for years. Iāve got chronic problems and just last year my husband had the peanut gallery sent off to grandmasā houses (not a typo, my MIL lives on the same block as my mother) so I could rest and get tests done and all that. I understand that mental illness is an illness and that Wanda was Going Through It ā¢ but she had those kids for a few days, tops. She didnāt watch them grow slowly from a little loaf wrapped in a blanket to inquisitive little people with favorite colors. She never had that moment of cognitive dissonance when the helpless little baby does something like write some random misshapen letters unprompted and says they are ādo work do workā or get their own snack for the first time. They canāt get their own snack, thatās a baby itās illegalā¦ what do you mean they are almost three? Just yesterday they could just barely pick up their own head to watch the kitty walk by!
What is time?
Yes, you can get emotionally attached to kids really fast, but it takes time to really bond with them. Including time before they are born, where hormones are doing all sorts of things to momās brain to try to make that happen. PPD is when that love bomb doesnāt go off correctly or crashing from the high hits too hard. (To be extremely reductive.) That was one day for Wanda. One. Day.
Her magic really is cheating.
But really, it is like show in some ways. You put them down on a blanket on the floor and shake a little rattle and then you turn around one day to see them toddling about. You rush to stop them hitting their head on the coffee table and the kid in your arms is heavy and telling you a story about Paw Patrol and Tinkerbell working together. (Babyās first fanfic is always a crossover.) It takes forever and no time at all.
Wanda didnāt do that. If she knows the kids sheās after in MoM then it is only through voyeurism. She watched someone else being a mother and thought that was the same as doing it herself. Sheās in love with the idea but she hasnāt done it. Dear god woman, just adopt!
I think that is the point that supposedly snaps her back to reality at the end, but holy horse crap does this movie go out with a wheeze. A gorgeously imagined wheeze with a zombie payoff to a decent setup I didnāt see coming (though by that point there had been so much deus ex machina it isnāt all that satisfying) and the best CGI set one can pay to have made in less than a month (because Marvel cannot make the big decisions until after half the movie is filmed anymore, Iām looking at you Endgame time travel suit designs) but in the end a limp and rather empty moment of teenaged girl self-actualization. Power Puff Girls did it better in a 13 minute cartoon.
A part of me wonders what it looked like before the reshoots. Could it really be worse? Did it break something they wanted to use later in the MCU or did it just go too far into the horror genera and they wanted to keep it more mainstream? Maybe the ending wasnāt happy enough - many horror films donāt have very happy endings. Hopeful, yes, but Crimson Peak ends fairly mournful even if Evelyn does have a blond guy to kiss because it respects that the trauma is still there when an abuser is gone. Everything about Thomas in the end is just sad, and they let it be sad. The MCU could never.
Sometimes, you shred the villain into confetti with magic or break their neck with a clay-stained shovel. We have a Multiverse, we can get another Wanda if they need her to be not-evil for a plot point later.
im so much more interested in a hoo that lets Percy keep the status and power heād left off with in the Last Olympian and explores how he grapples with that instead of immediately forcing him back into the role of the underdog at the expanse of his prior development. Let the fact that he alone has the title the āSavior of Olympusā mean something. Let the fact that he is the sole survivor of the great prophecy mean something. Let the Curse of Achilles mean something. Let us see how itās a curse and how it could warp his sense of self. Let Percy be on a completely different playing field than the rest of the seven (or even the other children of the big three at this point) and show us how it alienates him.
like call me crazy but I just think Percy being offered godship should have irrevocably altered his standing within the demigod and godly worlds even though he ultimately refused it !!
and maybe this is cheesy of me but idc idc just imagine a SON where monsters and gods alike refer to Percy as āSavior of Olympusā or āthe god that wasnātā or āthe god that almost wasā or anything within that vein and think about how unsettling that would have been for an amnesiac Percy. How unsettling that would have been for Frank and Hazel.
and its unsettling for them in different ways because for Frank and Hazel theyāre quickly piecing together that the stranger theyāre traveling with is not just extremely powerful, but he is inexplicably known in the godly world. Monsters and deities recognize him. Title him as something thatās inconceivable, impossible really (The Savior of Olympus? The god that almost was?) and then for Percy itās unsettling because even though he doesnāt have his memories, these titles resonate with him. They feel right even though he doesnāt have any of the context for it because Names have power. Titles have power.
Percy jackson supremacy should be an all-time tag in the pjo fandom. After all, itās a fundamental truth. Personally, I am pretty sure no one has the heart to hate Percy Jackson himself. I am sure you all agree with this to some extent.
Pre redemption Jamie tartt was the funniest bitch alive and Iām tired of pretending heās not. āRoy, if youāre gonna go to the shower, you should take your sweater off first, palā is objectively hilarious. āBabe, itās 2020, women can do anythingā in response to keeley not wanting to bid on him? Feminist king. Some welsh newspaper asked him for a quote about a teammate he hangs out with on the reg and he pulled the phrase ājaundiced wormā out of thin air. He hit on bumbercatchs mom (in front of his dad!), probably only because his own stone cold milf was safely in Manchester and it couldnāt be reciprocated. Roy scolds ted about wanting to know if the snacks in the locker room are tasty enough and he just slides in there with āuhā¦they are not.ā A Comedian^ā¢
I was supposed to be finishing Boots & Bottles. But instead, a vision came to me.
Season 1 Jamie, at a bar with the team, trying to figure out why Colin, Isaac, Declan, and Roy were hiding behind a wall and spying on someone in the dining room bar.
If that doesnāt make sense, ignore it. Itās all a thin plot to get to Jamie offering to seduce the guy. Heās Declanās sisterās boyfriend, sheās out of town, heās at a bar, they think heās trying to cheat on her.
This isnāt a fic. Itās barely a story. Mostly just sentences strung along with a few descriptions to give an idea lmao.
āNo oneās ever accused me of being subtle afore.ā
Lmao imagine for a moment being Colin Hughes, terrified that your teammates and coaches will hate you if you come out, watching as literally everybody on the team believes Jamie to be gay and have absolutely no bad feelings about it, like yep Jamieās gay, weāve known for years, isnāt that right Jamie, bro? And Jamieās like meee? š³ you think Iām gay? šš Iām flattered! š³ and you know that in that moment all Colin could think was āwhat the actual fuckā
Not to be overly sensitive but I will admit Iām not such a fan of Jamieās inability to read sarcasm being used to communicate to the audience that heās stupid
Canāt believe this guy asked his girlfriend and team captain a question about an event theyād participated in before but was new to him, and they told him something and he believed them. Hilarious stuff. What an idiot
No one has said this here. But I know there are people who think ābut it was so outlandish and obviously not something that would happenā.
Except it does, in fact, happen. Itās not outlandish in his experience!
Another Ted Lasso, Jamirle Tartt obersvation. And there might be a few as I rewatch and blog my thoughts out there, because I love Jamie and his arc.
In season 2, when he comes back, it is his first time back in the locker room. He steps up and apologises, and the team pretty much tell him all that he needs to apologise for and why they dont like him pr want him back. And to be fair, most of them were valid reasons and things he should apologize for cause he was a prick. Like calling Colin a worm, or hitting on Bumbercatchās mum in front of his dad (even if that is a little funny And he probs meant nothing by as flirting and shwoing off, thatās just his personality).
But the part that seems really unfair to me is that Issac blames him for getting them regulated, and the whole team jumps in to agree. And shout at him for it.
Yeah, Jamie didnāt do anything wrong in that scenario, and he doesnāt owe any apology to anyone for that. His a professional football player, and his job is to play the best he can for his team. His team was Manchester City at that time. He owed it to his team mates, coaches and the fans to give a 100%. He didnāt get you regulated. Your season performance did.
I get it felt personal and maybe he took some joy in it. (I donāt blame him for that eithier, from Jamieās perspective, (which is a separate post I want to make as I think his season 1 storyline is a completly differnt story in his eyes.) He got pubically benched for not being a team player, told to man up and get over himself, he did that and shared personal information and tried to buy into the Lasso way, only to get told the next morning he was getting sent back to Man City. We know it wasnāt Ted who did that, but he doesnāt. To him, he did what was asked and then got sent away anyway. If I was him I would want some instant caramel too.) and I mean my team I go for has lost a final in over time, after the siren to a free kick and I donāt have a lot of love for the player from the other team who did it cause that hurt to watch but I donāt blame the player.
So yeah, Jamie owes apologies, and I get the 5eam aint thrilled to have him back at the beginning, but no one should have made him feel bad for the Manchester City game. Jamie also didnāt hurt Roy in that game. Roy hurt himself in a legal tackle. Jamie did nothing wrong that game.
Def good insights here. I understand Isaac being mad, because it is a human response. But him having the opportunity to take that anger out on Jamie, and then taking said opportunity? And then bringing others in to abusing the situation? Was not his best moment.
But that is one of the things I find interesting (and unbearable) is that Jamie coming back has made him into an easy target for anger and mockery. And his position feeling tenuous plus wanting to be accepted means he just takes it. Without any complaint at any time in the next 1.5 seasons.
Itās almost like heād been trained from a young age to allow himself to be berated and belittled. Without hitting back. And had to find a way to move forward despite the extra hurdles.
And boy does that make me sad. Even when he is embraced and part of the
teamfamily. People will revert back to punching bag/scapegoat Jamie. And he allows it as though it is a service he is providing.

can we pleeeease talk about how rushed the whole Nico and Will relationship was? They talked for 2 minutes, don't see each other forever and boom they're together. Like ??? When did that happen? Certainly not in the books? (okay I haven't read the books in ages, but it felt so forced and extremely rushed or is it just me? I'm queer myself so I'm all for LGBTQ+ representation, but that's not it)
Alright letās tackle this! Sorry for answering so late, I always answer asks that will be longer super late ^^ anyway. Iāve sorta received this ask twice but the other one has more focused on Nico with a little bit Solangelo on the side so Iāll just fully tackle the Solangelo side on this one.
I have three simple issues with Solangelo.
Alright. Letās start off with the first point or problem. Age. Or rather time. As in timeline. Because we all know that Rick Riordan basically spins a wheel whenever it comes to his timeline and I wonāt go fully into the maths because Iām terrible at it and Iām not in the mood for embarrassing myself in that metier. Anyway, letās proceed. My question is: what is their canonical age? The one from Will and the one from Nico?
Iāve caught glimpse in a group convo at the fact that Will was supposed to be 18 actually if you pay close attention to pjo? And I mean Nico is like 15 or something? Which is also sorta wrong? Because Riordan made him younger than Hazel who was 14 in the Herpes of Olympus saga. 14 and 18 is a fuck no from me, son. I guess Riordan forgot that HOO essentially took place in two days or something.
Riordan aging his characters down or rather refusing to let them age (looking at you, Percy and Annabeth!) because it doesnāt convenience him isnāt something new. So, should they be mathematically speaking have that much of an age gap, yeah. That is problematic. Thatās Frazel level kinda problematic. Even worse. I know that people are more inclined to look past age gaps in same-sex relationships but I always wondered why? Thereās still a disproportionate level of maturity + a mighty power imbalance. So yeah. Watch out for that. Also theyāre kids. So thereās no need in tying the knot and popping expensive champagne for their wedding just yet.
I mean I donāt have a problem with the time traveling aspect as in Nico still being mentally and physically a kid/teen. A little odd, sure. Itās not like Nico and Will are Edward and Bella and Nicoās goth ass is mentally aging along and stalking Willās sorry self. Itās still weird because itās so unbelievable? Nico is barely struggling finding his way into the modern world, chills at Hades and calls it a day? Now thatās something I have an issue with. I need more struggle. I need more vocab mix-ups. Nicoās brain exploding at the modern world. The difference between the 1940s and the late 2000s is massive. That isnāt just oh, weird little haircuts and why are women wearing pants, it would be not being able to comprehend things and questioning every new little object. Will couldāve been an amazing support character for such an arch, buuuut Iām deviating from my actual point. The timeline/age-line in the Riordanverse is for sure more on the concerning part for all new characters + OG side characters.
Second point. Substance. The thing youāve touched in your ask.
How and when did Nico and Will become a thing? My memory is terrible and Iām too lazy to browse the wiki. The only thing I remember was Will being a nagging bitch in Blood of Olympus after Nico essentially said āIāve got to move on and be who I am, I just donāt belong here, I hope you understand, we might find a place in this world someday, but at least for nowā¦ I gotta go my own wayā¦ā to Percy who just went ??? That marked the beginning for this ship. Basically. I think. Wellā¦ I said before in my Percabeth ship roast (more like ship analysis, I have to redo that, that was way too mild and unfunny, omfg): most of the romance is in your head because thereās barely anything romantic in Riordanās books to begin with (which we all should actually be thankful for!). This applies to essentially every goddamn ship in this series but especially Solangelo. Holy fuck. Yāall are pulling out the wildest stuff out of your ass based onā¦ what exactly? I mean props for creativity!
It is abundantly clear to me at least, that Riordan didnāt write Nico with the intention of being gay. There was no real indication in the Percy Jackson series (and I refuse to believe that he was this sort of mastermind, that plotted about doing all of this behind Disneyās back to get the gays and latinos in. Thereās a market for everything and diversity was a coming trend in the 2010s).
One could say: Hey! Isnāt it great that Nico wasnāt labeled as being gay? It normalizes homosexuality and makes sure that the lgbtq+ community isnāt something abstract but rather folk like me and you. And to that Iād say yes, I mostly agree if the follow-up arch is believable and plausible. Which it isnāt in my opinion. We jump from the Heroes of Olympus saga to The Trials of (Mo)Lester I mean Apollo and weāre having this HUGE jump? From barely knowing each other to being soulmates, sitting next to each other, hanging out, going on in their business, having the picket white fence, two kids, three dogs, living in a gentrified neighborhood and baking cherry pie on Sundays? HOW IN THE ACTUAL FUCK DID ALL OF THIS HAPPEN?! That is incredibly rushed.
Arenātā¦you shippersā¦.Mad? Thatās so cheap? Iād say so? Wouldnāt you like to have more pre-existing relationship and plausible development? With Percabeth you at least have a five book long progression, Solangelo is Riordan basically taking a dump on your plate and forcing you to eat it. And no, Riordan teasing the last Apollo doesnāt count.
Additionally, wouldnāt it be way better to still have a character say āYeah, Iām gay. Pass me that salt, will ya?ā without it being gimmicky or a foil or something for woke points? Just showing kids: āHey, if you think this is a label that suits you, itās fine! Itās perfect even! No worries!ā (Also, the ācoming out sceneā with Jason and Cupid wasnāt it, my loves. That was horrifying and insulting imo).
I mean. Show and tell are powerful tools in narration and telling more than often resolves unnecessary conflict/dialogue. And whereas season one from Percy Jackson had barely anything in that direction with Nicoās identity, season two didnāt make it any better. And season three is a complete cluster fuck.
Yeah. For me, the ship is super rushed.
Final point. The fandom.
I have to inter-subjectively state that Solangelo shippers are fucking crazy. I know Percabeth shippers (including me, helloooo) and especially the Annabeth stans for some odd reason are insane, but Solangelo shippers take the fucking cake and then some. Thereās already a disconnect between the age groups in the fandom and itās clear that more of the older teens and adults center around the Percy Jackson story and some in the Heroes of Olympus sequel, but from what Iāve seen the Trials of Apollo fandom is super young and on a whole different level. Might be the reason why facing some criticisms seems harder, because the minute you open your mouth to say something about Solangelo, you have people attacking you left and right. Chill guys, itās not that deep? And itās definitely not a personal attack on you. After all, I donāt know who you are and tbh Idgaf.
Talking about the lack of substance, fanon will automatically come in and fill the gaps. Which is fine and something we all do, but I really have to wonder about the levels of extremes that some take?
We all center around certain tropes and what not and while the trope and dynamic behind Solangelo isnāt particularly something for me, I really have to ask why people are behind it. Donāt get me wrong. My question is touching on more on M/M fetishization because I think that is mostly the driving force for some people rather than liking the actual ship? I see more people projecting things into Nico and Will and itās really turning their characters into something they arenāt? Especially with Nico, who gets turned into this 5 ft. UwU punk princess which is hella strange???
All in all, I donāt have anything against the ship apart from itās overrushed nature and Riordanās wacky timeline. Do whatever you want with it (apart from fetishizing and sexualizing the ship), no oneās stopping you from liking it. But I do believe there are some things to look out for, especially in the fandom.
Take it easy, guys.
History loves to repeat itself
