there aren’t enough posts going around about the swedish cryptid known as the skvader which is a rabbit with pheasant wings and also a very good boy.

like this one dude just made a fake taxidermy and spread it around as a hoax for a good ass while and it lead to this really cool fantasy creature and i am genuinely dissapointed that it never gets used in anything

THE BOY

Rabbirds, by the amazing @tkingfisher/Ursula Vernon (source).

The lack of skvaders is particularly frustrating when you realize it forms the third point of a wonderful cryptid trifecta.

You got the jackalopes, which are rabbits with antlers.

And you got the wolpertingers, which are rabbits with antlers and wings.

And then… what? Do you escalate? That’s unbalanced, those two rabbit cryptids don’t have the same number of extra things, the wolpertinger is clearly the jackalope But More.

BUT with the skvader on the other side, balance is restored. Antler rabbit, winged rabbit, winged antler rabbit. It’s a classic Venn diagram of imaginary lapine beasts, and it’s only complete if you acknowledge the fucking skvader.

Good thing Ursula’s got our back, at least.

This is a really excellent point and I applaud your advancements in Cryptid Theory.

Alright, hmm…
I guess Imma add my (apparently unpopular) opinion here and say that… I actually think it was the right call? I honestly believe keeping it would have taken away much more than it would have added.
As in, the only thing it really does is bludgeon you with the explicit, in-your-face confirmation that Jayce was indeed crying. However, I feel like in storytelling, going the path of blatant, escalated emotion is rarely the right thing to do when you can convey it in other ways.
(In this case for instance, Jayce’s VA works absolute miracles - we may not see the tears but we hear them clear as day in his voice. I’ve rarely heard someone do “choked up and trembling with barely contained emotion” quite like him as Jayce.)
On the other hand, one thing it would have detracted from in a major way is Viktor’s emotions - or apparent lack thereof - at learning the news.
It’s a delicate balance to strike, because of course Fortiche/Riot wanted there to be a noticable contrast between the two characters’ reactions, but they also didn’t want to put so much focus on one character’s emotions as to make it difficult to pull the audience’s attention back to those of the more subdued party’s. I think they struck that balance really well.
(Besides, despite being a highly emotional person who is not afraid to show it, in this specific scene it also just makes sense and is in line with Jayce’s character that he - y'know, believing that he is about to deliver absolutely crushing news to Viktor - would want to be as strong and composed for him as he knows how in this moment.)
More importantly though:
I think it would have - even if on a somewhat subconscious level - detracted from Jayce’s emotional journey throughout the show.
It’s a little difficult for me to explain what precisely I mean (also I am no expert when it comes to story composition so there is likely proper terminology I’m lacking), but while there are many points throughout the story where we can absolutely infer that Jayce is or has been crying:
It still makes a difference that we don’t ever fully see it - until, of course, this moment happens:
When finally, as Jayce finds himself isolated with only the company of himself and his own regret, removed from anything left to fight for or against, no distraction to keep the tears from falling, we do get to see the dam break.
I prefer the impact of this, really.
