The HUD as seen in Survival mode

The heads-up display (HUD) includes various UI elements shown on-screen during gameplay. It is superimposed on their view of the game world.

Description

[edit | edit source]

The HUD encompasses all superimposed UI elements and rendered objects shown during gameplay that are not menu screens or GUIs which are opened by the player. Most elements can be hidden by pressing F1; some screen overlays are excluded in Java Edition.

In Bedrock Edition, the "Hide HUD" video setting toggles all elements except for the player hand and idling overlay. Many elements also have their own, independent options. The /hud command can toggle the visibility of many individual HUD elements, though not all.

The GUI scale option/setting changes the size of UI elements in the HUD. It defaults to the largest possible size, some smaller options may only be available on higher screen resolutions. The "Screen Safe Area" option in Bedrock Edition allows to set a margin between the edge of the window and the display of UI elements.

In Bedrock Edition, the UI style can be toggled between Classic and Pocket. Pocket UI (default on mobile) moves certain objects such as the health and hunger bar to the top corners of the screen.

Hotbar

[edit | edit source]
The hotbar
The hotbar in Bedrock Edition when using touch controls

The hotbar is a selection bar that appears on the bottom of the screen. It is where the player stores and selects commonly used items. It consists of the bottom nine slots within the player's inventory. Items do not show their stack count here in Creative mode.

In Java Edition, players can dual wield allowing a second item to be shown on the other side, along with an additional hotbar slot on the same side. Both the slot and the item are shown only if it contains an item, which can either be added using the GUI or by pressing "swap items".

In Bedrock Edition, tapping on a hotbar slot with touch controls selects the item. It also has an additional button for the inventory when using touch controls.

Status bars

[edit | edit source]
The most common bars in the HUD. Clockwise starting from the bottom left: the experience bar, the health bar, the armor bar, the oxygen bar, and the hunger bar

Above the hotbar, various indicators and bars can be shown for the player's gameplay status. In Survival and Adventure mode, this shows the player's health points and hunger points. Health icons can take on a different appearance when the player is in Hardcore mode, freezing, under the Wither effect, or with Absorption, and hunger icons take on a different appearance when under the Hunger effect.

Armor points may be shown above the health points when the player is wearing armor. Breath icons can be shown above the hunger icons to indicate the player's air supply unit when underwater or suffocating.‌[BE only] These bars are shown on the top-right and top-left on the screen when playing with the "Pocket UI" profile in Bedrock Edition.

Experience bar

[edit | edit source]

The experience bar is shown in between the health and hunger bars, and the hotbar. It displays green progress for the next experience level, and shows a number for the player's current experience levels.

Locator bar

[edit | edit source]
Main article: Locator Bar
Locator bar in Survival mode

The locator bar appears in place of the experience bar when in a multiplayer game, except when gaining XP. It shows the position of other players as colored square indicators, often referred to as waypoints. They appear approximately within 120° of the camera facing towards the target. If the target is on a significantly different Y-level, an arrow pointing to the target vertically appears over the square indicator. The player's experience levels are still shown above the locator bar.

The locator bar is shown on any game mode, when it is toggled on by the locator_bar‌[JE only] or playerwaypoints‌[BE only] game rule.

Riding mobs

[edit | edit source]

The empty jump bar/dash bar
The full jump bar/dash bar

Upon mounting a horse, donkey, mule, llama, pig, strider, camel, happy ghast, nautilus, or zombie nautilus, the ridden mob's health bar appears above the hunger bar. It uses a slightly different heart texture than the player's health bar.

Also, upon mounting a horse, camel, nautilus, or zombie nautilus, the jump bar (for horses) or the dash bar (for camels, nautiluses and zombie nautiluses) also appears above the experience bar. When riding a skeleton horse underwater, the oxygen bar, if necessary, appears above the mob health bar.

Item text

[edit | edit source]
A held item tooltip above the hotbar

When the player switches an item in hand by hotbar scrolling, its name is shown above the experience level for a short period of time. In Bedrock Edition, the background opacity can be adjusted with the "Background opacity (text & tooltips)" option in the accessibility settings.

The held item tooltip contains the name of the item which can be formatted. In Bedrock Edition, certain tooltip lines are also included, displayed in color
 #C6C6C6
:

Only one held item tooltip can be shown at a time.

In Bedrock Edition, playing a music disc shows "Now playing: music disc name" in
 #FF66B2
(a color not available through formatting codes), positioned slightly above held item tooltips. Pocket jukeboxes can also show "Music paused" here.[upcoming: Music Features Add-On]

Additionally, when the player attempts to drop an inventory-locked item, it displays a message as item text that it can't be dropped.

The player's hand is always shown on the right side of the screen (left side if the player's main hand is set to "left"),‌[JE only] and corresponds to the player's hand in the skin. In Bedrock Edition, all animations from the hand as seen in third person are also seen on the HUD, including the breathing animation and eating/drinking. When an item in the hotbar is selected, it shows in place of the hand rotated similarly to held items in third-person, with a switching animation. Some held items can show animations, and when charging a crossbow in Bedrock Edition, the left hand can also be seen. Items can also be held in the offhand slot, which will show on the other side, but an empty hand is not shown. With Vibrant Visuals, directional light effects (shadows, caustics, light) are also visible on the hand, and held items apply their texture sets.

The hand can be toggled independently from the HUD in Bedrock Edition, meaning that it can be shown standalone without other HUD elements. However, pressing F1 still hides the hand.

Crosshair

[edit | edit source]
Close-up of the crosshair

The crosshair is a small cross in the middle of the screen. It shows the aim point of the tool or item being held to entities or blocks for attacking or any interactions within a specific range from the player. The crosshair inverts the colors of the area it is upon, which can result in a nearly invisible crosshair if the area is a medium gray.

On touch controls when the control mode is set to "Joystick & tap to interact" or "D-Pad & tap to interact" with "Split controls" disabled, the crosshair is only shown when aiming a ranged weapon or using a spyglass.

Effects

[edit | edit source]
All effect icons at the same time in Bedrock Edition

All effects the player currently has are shown on the top-right of the screen. Ambient effects have a blue outline, and effects with particles hidden are not indicated in the HUD, including Darkness.‌[Java Edition only]

In Java Edition, effects are organized from right to left in order of time remaining. Positive effects are shown on the top row and negative effects on the bottom row. In Bedrock Edition, effects are organized from top to bottom in order of time remaining, with space for more columns on the left.

Effects that are about to run out start to flash. Tapping on an effect icon in touch controls opens the mob effects screen.

Bossbar

[edit | edit source]
Main article: Bossbar
The bossbar for the ender dragon.

A bossbar is a bar at the top of the screen that can track health of a boss mob or the total health of raid mobs. The bossbar appears naturally in the game through three means: during a raid, after constructing a wither, and upon entering the End if the ender dragon has not yet been defeated. In Java Edition, a bossbar can be created manually using the /bossbar command. There is a limit of 6[verify] bars shown.

Action bar

[edit | edit source]
Main article: Action bar
A dismount message on the action bar

The action bar is a space just above the player's hotbar where text can be displayed. Some gameplay elements use this to give contextual hints to the player. Text can also be displayed here using the /title command. In Bedrock Edition, the opacity of the black background of the action bar can be adjusted with the "Action bar opacity" option in the accessibility settings.

Autosave indicator

[edit | edit source]
Main article: Autosave
The autosave indicator in Bedrock Edition.

The autosave indicator indicates when the game is autosaving. In Java Edition, this is turned on by default and shows "Saving world" in the bottom-right of the screen. In Bedrock Edition, this is turned off by default and shows an animation of an arrow pointing into a chest in the top-right of the screen.

Whether or not this appears can be toggled in the options.

Main article: Chat

Chat messages are shown on the HUD, in the bottom left corner‌[Java Edition only]/top left corner,‌[Bedrock Edition only] showing anything recently spoken, commands recently executed, or other informational messages. In Java Edition, this can be expanded with T, allowing the player to enter chat messages or commands, and view the full chat history. In Bedrock Edition, pressing Open Chat opens the chat menu, which is not part of the HUD but a separate menu screen.

The background opacity and message duration can be changed in the options/settings. Additionally, the text color, font, font size, and line spacing can be changed in the chat settings.‌[Bedrock Edition only]

Closed captions

[edit | edit source]
Main article: Closed captions

Closed captions display text for sounds in-game. When turned on, this lists sounds in the world that are nearby to the player on the right of the screen. If the sounds are offscreen, "<" or ">" point in the direction the sound is coming from. As the sound fades away, the text also fades, becoming less white.

They can be enabled in the "Music & Sounds"‌[JE only] or "Accessibility Settings" sections of the options/settings menu. In Bedrock Edition, subtitles use the same styling (font, color, size, spacing) and background as the chat. Their duration can be changed, and the position can be toggled between the bottom-right and top-right at the same height as the chat.

Screen effects and overlays

[edit | edit source]
Main article: Screen effects

Screen effects encompass a variety of effects applied alongside or beneath the heads-up display as augmentations to the player's point of view as a method of conveying further information about a player's current state.

Screen title

[edit | edit source]
Example of a screen title

A screen title is displayed to players as a single line of large center-aligned text in the middle of their displays, and can include a subtitle; a second, separate line of text displayed just below the title. It is controlled with the /title and /titleraw commands and can be styled or set with custom durations and fading.

In Bedrock Edition, the opacity of the black background of the screen title can be adjusted with the "Background opacity (text & tooltips)" option in the accessibility settings.

Scoreboard

[edit | edit source]
Main article: Scoreboard
The scoreboard on the HUD

The scoreboard system is a complex gameplay mechanic utilized through commands. Mainly intended for mapmakers and server operators, scoreboards are used to track, set, and list the scores of entities in a myriad of different ways. It is displayed on the right side of the screen.

Toasts

[edit | edit source]
Main articles: Toasts and Tutorial hints

Toasts are text boxes shown for various notifications and when the player unlocks new crafting or smelting recipes. Most of them show up in the top of the screen, and are displayed in front of other HUD elements. They are not specific to the HUD; toasts can be shown anywhere in the game.

Tutorial hints (also known as game tips in Bedrock Edition) are toasts that show up for new players, guiding them into basic understanding of the game's controls. These can be turned off or reset in the settings.‌[Bedrock Edition only]

In Bedrock Edition, the duration of toast messages can be adjusted in the accessibility settings.

Debug screen

[edit | edit source]

The Java Edition debug screen is triggered when F3 is pressed. It functions as a menu for accessing debugging information and many toggleable graphs with technical information. Specific keybinds are used to toggle debug features.

In Bedrock Edition development versions, debug text is shown at the top of the screen with some technical information about the game's state. It can be toggled in options.txt.

In both versions, this is displayed in front of all other game elements. Neither are specific to the HUD; they can also be shown in the menu screens.

Demo timer

[edit | edit source]

In the demo mode, a timer shows on the top-right indicating the remaining free playtime for that world.

Bedrock Edition exclusive elements

[edit | edit source]

Controller hints

[edit | edit source]

When using a controller, available actions the player can take are listed on the bottom left and right of the screen, alongside the icon of the button to press to perform that action. Controller hints can be toggled in the settings or by pressing F10 on a keyboard.

Mobile controller

[edit | edit source]
Main article: Controls § Touch
Joystick control mode
D-Pad control mode

These buttons are present only in mobile and desktop versions with a touchscreen, and they are used to control the player. Players can sneak, fly and jump using the mobile controller.

In the settings under "Controls" → "Touch", players can choose between D-Pad, normal joystick (touch control mode), and joystick with crosshair aim control mode. D-Pad crosshair aim is available separate using "Split Controls" setting.

The control customization interface. Note that this does not show the top buttons.

The position, scale, and opacity of individual controls can be customized in the touch settings.

In addition to control buttons, there is a row of static buttons at the top of the screen, allowing to change perspective (if enabled), open the game menu, open the chat, and access emotes. The size of these buttons can be adjusted.

An independent action button sometimes appears above the hotbar when a unique action can be performed.

Paper doll

[edit | edit source]
The corner of the screen with the paper doll, position, and days played

The paper doll is a side-view of the player displayed in the top-left corner of the screen, accurate for the player's appearance with skin, worn armor or held items, and animations. The paper doll is visible when the player is sprinting, sneaking, sprint-swimming, emoting, or flying. Locked in the top-left corner of the screen, it pushes elements such as the chat and closed captions down.

The paper doll can be toggled by pressing F8 on keyboard, or in the settings. This can be done independently from hiding the HUD, although pressing F1 also disables the paper doll.

Position and Days Played

[edit | edit source]

If the respective game rules are enabled, the player's coordinates and/or days played will be displayed in a box in the top left of the screen. If both are enabled at the same time, the position is listed above the number of days played. Both are shown below the paper doll, and above the chat. The background opacity of this text is affected by the "Background opacity (text & tooltips)" accessibility setting.

Identify

[edit | edit source]
A mob described above the hotbar after the button has been pressed

In the controls menu, a keybind can be assigned to Identify for keyboard & mouse or controller modes. Once pressed in-game, this shows above the hotbar (as an item tooltip) the name of the block or entity the player currently faces. If an entity has been renamed, the custom name will display instead. This is only shown when an object in front of the player can be interacted with (usually hitting or breaking), so water or objects far away are not described.

This also reveals names from technical blocks, like Piston Arm Collision, Lit Furnace, or Cave Vines.

As this uses the same space as held item tooltips, they cannot be shown at the same time and are affected by the same settings.

Splitscreen

[edit | edit source]

Splitscreen mode on consoles divides the screen into sections for each player, each having its own HUD. The gamertag of the respective player is shown on the top-right of the HUD for each section, which can be toggled in the video settings.

The overlay when the game is idling

When no input is detected for 15 minutes, the game enters "sleep mode" where the screen is darkened, FPS lowered, and an animated toast-like message appears on the bottom. Any new input instantly takes the game out of sleep mode.

Compass

[edit | edit source]
The Editor's compass on the top-right

Available in the Editor only, a compass shows on the top-right of the world viewer in tool mode. This rotates accordingly with the player's view, showing the increasing or decreasing directions of X and Z coordinates. Clicking on a direction of the compass turns the camera into that direction. It shows as part of the HUD in the actual world viewer; not as part of the GUI overlay from tool mode. It can be toggled in the settings.

Java Edition exclusive elements

[edit | edit source]
The attack indicator, empty (top) and full (bottom), when the Attack Indicator option is set to Crosshair
The attack indicator, empty (left) and full (right), when the Attack Indicator option is set to Hotbar

Attack indicator

[edit | edit source]

The attack indicator is a subtle element that can be displayed as a sword silhouette, or as a sword sprite next to the hotbar, depending on the player's options. The attack indicator is not displayed at all when the respective option is set to "OFF".

If the option for the attack indicator is set to "Crosshair" mode, the attack indicator will be displayed as a horizontal sword silhouette directly underneath and in the same style as the crosshair, in the following way:

  • when the attack cooldown timer is active, the attack indicator will signify the remaining cooldown time, and subsequently disappear once the cooldown ends
  • when a fully cooled weapon is being held, and a mob or player is within reach, the attack indicator, along with an additional plus-sign (+), will signify that the weapon is in range to land a full-damage blow. The cooldown timer is displayed the same way on the attack indicator even if this condition is active, except for that the plus-sign will not be displayed until the cooldown is over.

If the option for the attack indicator is set to "Hotbar" mode, the attack indicator will be displayed as a unique sprite of a gray sword to the right of the hotbar. As the attack cooldown timer advances, the sprite will begin to adopt color and fill progressively from the bottom-up. The sword sprite disappears once the cooldown is over.

In the combat tests, a shield indicator could also be enabled in the same locations.

China Edition

[edit | edit source]
This feature is exclusive to China Edition.
The HUD in China Edition.

In China Edition, a "2 button" can be seen at the top of the screen. There is also a button to allow the player to take a screenshot or switch the camera and change voice settings.

At the right of the screen, a button can be seen that is used to lock walking, sprinting or sneaking.

  • The player's hand does not disappear in first person mode after death.‌[Java Edition only][1]
  • The hearts on a mounted mob's health bar resemble saddles.
  • The background of each hotbar slot uses a unique texture that resembles sand blocks when darkened
  • The crosshair is not centered.
