that ask about Brothers in Blood got me thinking about them again. have something I've just written. set in my blending of pre and post crisis universe

"You know, when we first met you I wanted to take you in," Dick's voice was deceptively casual, as if he hadn't just destroyed Jason's entire worldview. "Bruce wouldn't let me."

Jason sat straight up and stared incredulously at his older brother. "I'm sorry, what?"

"Mhm, yeah, said I was too young and that he also knew what it was like to be an orphan. That he could support you just as well as I could."

"No, no, you don't get to breeze past that as if it's nothing," Jason said firmly, eyes wide. "What do you mean, you wanted to take me in?"

Dick glanced over, noticing the stunned look on Jason's face. "Did you... did you not know?"

"No. No I didn't," He whispered.

"I thought you did. I thought it was obvious. I gave you Robin."

The younger man's brow furrowed. "What does that have anything to do with it?"

Dick blinked. "Robin was my mother's name. Giving that to you was me saying you're family."

"Oh."

in my hc/au, dick and rose met during his apprentuice arc (tgt with terra) -> based on this fic

so

on this au

when dick and terra ran away, rose stayed.

after some time, dick and jason started to be like brothers, but... dick saw A LOT of rose in jason

even switched names sometimes.

after jason's death, he had no one anymore. tim came and made things a bit better, but he still missed them

and them he re-encontered rose (renegade arc). they reunite and he couldn't be more happy. except for.... he sees jason in rose now.

allucinating him in her

now they're both ok, his siblings are both ok

but it was a hard time for sure

in the early seasons of supernatural, sam wears unique clothing. he wears jeans with detailing on the pockets, his signature hoodie, and lots of graphic tees. even his computer has cute little stickers on it.

yet as the seasons go by, he loses more and more of his unique clothing until his wardrobe is nearly identical to deans. this loss of personal style tracks with his willpower and willingness to fight with dean and his assimilation into the hunting lifestyle.

Bruce would give up the mission if Dick ever died. And not in the angry-grief way of "this is the last straw on the camel's back" aka the way he sorta kicked Dick out, but in the "hasn't set foot in the Cave in over a month because the last time he did he kept hearing Dick's laugh echoing across the stalactites" way. He literally cannot bear to put on the cowl, to be Batman, because Batman has existed longer with Robin than without. Bruce doesn't remember being Batman without Robin (without Dick) anymore. He can recall his first meetings with a few of the Rogues, but beyond that? It's been so long that those first 2-4 years are all just a haze of self destructive grief. Dick flipped his entire life in a 180 to the total opposite direction. He showed him how to hope, to love, to live. If Dick dies as an adult, Bruce would've spent half his life with his first son. No matter what age Dick dies at, Bruce will have always spent more time being Batman with Dick Grayson as a son rather than without him. Dick changed Batman, changed Bruce so irrevocably that Bruce wouldn't ever be able to wear the cowl without remembering him.

Okay, so, Dick, right? Everyone's like, "Sunshine boy!" and all that. But, seriously, think about it.

His parents? Gone. Just... gone. Right in front of him. That's, like, super messed up. You don't just forget that.

And then he goes to live with Bruce. Which, yeah, cool, but it's also, like, a whole different world. Secrets, shadows, all that.

And then Robin. First Robin! But then there's more Robins. It's not mean, but, like, things change. That's... weird.

He's so good at pretending he's fine. Always smiling, making jokes. But I bet when he's alone? He remembers. The falling, the noise, the scared feeling. It's still there.

And I bet he feels kinda... lost sometimes. Like, who is he, without Robin, without Bruce? That's, like, all he knows.

He's always making sure everyone else is okay. But who's making sure he's okay?

He's got this "I'm fine!" thing down. But I bet he's just... tired. Tired of pretending. Tired of all the stuff. I bet he just wants someone to, like, really ask, "Are you okay?" And listen.

confusedhummingbird asked:

What would you say are key aspects or characterization that make Dick Grayson well Dick Grayson?

Thank You! ☺️

psychemochanight answered:

Obviously I can’t say everything (although everything about him is iconic), so…

First of all, I’ll say that it’s his background.

His life story is what sets him apart from the other members of his family in the first place. They may all share skills, aspects of their personality… But that background, that life in the circus, that meaning behind Robin’s name in him, that’s what’s different in first place. Even when they tried to make Jason have a similar story it wasn’t the same, that’s just Dick’s thing.

Something that goes beyond being the first Robin. Even in age-reversal fics, people agree most of the time that the other brothers aren’t named Robin, and Dick is the first. Why? Because of his story.

It is also the fact that his unique fighting style is due to the place where he was born.

Second, his charisma.

Not his kindness, no; because even in universes where he’s not the good guy, he’s still Dick Grayson, and why? Because of his charisma.

That personality that he has that attracts everyone to him like the sun attracts the planets and keeps them revolving around it.

That charisma that allows Dick to manipulate everyone, and even after revealing his intentions, everyone simply accepts it as something that had to be. Nobody doubts him, it just feels right to listen to it and follow along.

And third, I would say it is his resilience.

He adapts. He struggles, but he adapts. He survives.

He never stays in one place. Somehow he keeps going. For his family, for his friends, for the citizens who trust him, for himself.

He has to get up and move on, and he will. Sometimes he needs help, yes, but he will still move on somehow.

He is one of the strongest characters I have ever seen, and I’m not talking about physical strength, but mental strength. No matter how unstable the fandom tends to present him, if there’s one thing that characterizes Dick, it’s his mental strength.

Obviously there are more things, like the way he acts with others, his love for the world, his sense of justice and responsibility, etc.

But I tried to focus on things that, even in worlds where he’s the bad guy, can still make you feel like that’s Dick Grayson.
