🍙Chie: Only by old Mrs. Yuyume, who really enjoys to ambush her on the street to ask her silly questions whenever she sees her carrying heavy sacks of groceries to the restaurant.

👺Tani: Almost by everyone. He's the captain of the Shinsengumi's 7th Division after all! The Shinsengumi's reputation on the city is bad in itself, and (since Tani is one of their most unpredictable wild cards), people not only recognize him, but do their best to stay out of his way as well.

🌸Kohana: She's Kyoto's most popular maiko/geiko so she's not only recognized wherever she goes, but is also harassed by crowds of desperate fans who try to talk to her, touch her, and invite her to places; which makes it necessary for her to go out accompanied by such a fear-inspiring guardian as Yumiko (and, subsequently, her Shinsengumi kenban/bodyguard).

💊Mantaro: He's usually recognized (and highly esteemed) by his patients belonging to the poorer stratum of Kyoto's society, but is practically invisible to the wealthy population.

🍑Ume: She's usually recognized by members of the Choshu, Tosa, and Satsuma clans due to her father's intellectual influence in their cause, but none of them pay much attention to her since they think she's just an ignorant/irrelevant woman.

🍳Izanagi: Widely recognized by the customers of the Mao restaurant (especially after the fire where a Shinsengumi captain was injured) as well as by most members of Kyoto's commercial district.

🧹Yumiko: Frequently recognized within Shimabara for being the oldest geiko of the Okiya "The Red Heron" as well as Kohana's mentor, but most people outside the neighborhood won't know who she is since she rarely leaves the place.

🗻Ba: She's literally a celebrity. If Kohana is the equivalent of a Japanese idol, then Ba is a Hollywood star, lol. The poorer classes don't know her personally like the aristocracy does, so they don't recognize anything other than her tayu rank; but that's enough to generate awe in people who catch a glimpse of her in public.

😭Chie: Sadness.

😒Tani: Envy.

😡Kohana: Anger.

😳Mantaro: Embarrassment.

😨Ume: Fear.

🙄Izanagi: Disgust.

Just as it happened during the Mao Restaurant fire, he couldn't help but wonder if the lord of the Toudou Domain would despair in the same way upon learning that his first-born son had been brutalized or murdered.

For Heisuke might be a bastard, the fruit of an unofficial relationship... but he would always be the first, wouldn't he? The one who bestowed the title of "father" on the man who sired him. That had to count, didn't it? It was valuable, wasn't it? No one... could just bring a son into the world and get rid of him without his conscience keeping him awake for the rest of his life! He would never settle for sending money to the son who was at risk of being impaled on some random ronin's steel just because society said he wasn't welcome in his own home!
