my father just found out about the murderbot casting and sent me like a dozen angry texts about it back to back, and his take is that for thematic reasons murderbot needs to not be a white man because it is constantly misjudged based on its appearance and assumed to have no real inner life or personhood, which is (1) very insightful, (2) not actually a take i have seen elsewhere in The Discourse so far (though i have not gone out of my way to look for The Discourse tbf), and (3) not remotely what i expected a not-very-online 60something cishet white guy not ordinarily given to literary analysis to say about it??? really caught me off-guard and now i’m also annoyed i didn’t think of it. like, i, the litcrit queer am over here going “idk i just think it’s the least interesting choice you could make” and he’s thinking about the subtextual resonances and/or ways of communicating the marginalized status of a secunit to the audience on a visceral level. goddammit.

And on the one hand, in ASR Secunit is treated as an appliance because they cannot see its face, they don’t even know it’s what they think of as a person until it drops its helmet, and on seeing it in civvies in their space they are confused about the new person. Knowing that it is a person, they immediately also ascribe interiority.
And on the other, they automatically grant Secunit personhood and meaningful interiority because none of them are white, either. A room full of white corporates would not, in either case.
Even once the operations are done, and the routines honed, to let Secunit pass as an augmented human, nobody looks at it and thinks it has status. Nobody looks at it and thinks it’s an important augmented human. Except for the people who learned it was really a person all along, and those who are willing to see and have solidarity with marginalized persons from the word go, usually because they are also marginalized persons.

The best part about being asexual is knowing that you will never be honeypotted. I often picture myself as a mark in a James Bond movie who has information or something and Daniel Craig saunters up in his sexiest tux to seduce me and I’m just like “No thank you” no matter what he does and then he has an existential crisis and walks away in a daze then sends in Moneypenny cause maybe I just like women and I’m like “hey girl, no thanks” and send her away as well and they just never get the information.
