Japan has been quietly building something that could change how critical data is secured. Since 2010, NICT has operated the Tokyo QKD Network, covering roughly 100 km around central Tokyo. The network uses quantum key distribution to detect attempts to intercept encryption keys. But the bigger breakthrough came later. In 2025, NICT, Toshiba and NEC demonstrated that QKD signals could be multiplexed onto the same optical backbone carrying 400 Gbps and 800 Gbps data, over a 25 km test link. No dedicated fibre just for quantum security. And in June 2026, NICT described its QKD testbed as having the world’s longest operational track record for testing quantum cryptographic communications. That changes the conversation. Japan isn’t simply trying to build a separate quantum network. It is working toward putting quantum security onto the networks that already exist. The real race may not be about who builds the biggest quantum computer.
