TYOTC: food zones

Ya know- apart from the time travel- I have to say the thing that’s messing me around the most are the food zones- seriously forget timezones- I can catch up to those eventually with sleep- but eating!?

I have no idea if I’m meant to be eating breakfast, dinner, or if I’m meant to be sleeping- my body cant decide- so far I’ve just been eating nuts and muesli bars- never quite hungry but never quite satisfied either.

And then I discovered how cheap the sushi is in Canada.

So. Much. Sushi. I’vs pretty much decided to live on it for the next 6 days.

It’s been a very agreeable plan thus far.

But blah blah food and sleep- the boring norms of a wandering jet-lagged tourist- let’s talk about Vancouver!

It’s beautiful. Just full stop- beautiful is the word to use for this city- the architecture and the people- it’s just lovely! They have electric buses, rainbow zebra crossings, and silly two dollar coins that have two coins inside it- I keep overpaying people because Australians are a logical sort- our two dollar coins are the same size as our five cent pieces but thicker. Our one dollar coins are larger- because logic?

Eh- either way I keep getting the twos and ones mixed up because I’m a special sort.

Also I went location hunting today! My roommates and I drove to Fort Langley and it was just so darling. Picture a stereotypical small Canadian two- are you picturing it? Little painted houses- tree lined streets- rivers and little diners and classic wooden churches. Are you picturing it? Now times it by two and thats Fort Langley. Quaint, green, friendly and cliche in a adorably cute way- this little town was just so pretty. We found five different locations from supernatural there and I took… Well a lets just say a few photos.

Tomorrow is the convention- so I’m gonna keep this short for now- maybe edit in the morning- being awake and conscious and maybe even possibly lucid sounds like a good plan!

So bring on the con! (And more agadashi tofu!)

TYOTC: Green light

I’m sitting here surrounded by stuff. Some of it’s familiar and well known; the colourful doona that’s covered my bed since I was a kid, my glasses and notebook and arm band, but scattered amongst that are new things. Bits and pieces I’ve collected and ticked off from scrawled lists over the past few weeks. Lists I’ve lost and had to re-write, that I’ve amended and scrapped and lost again.

Power cords are tangled, new luggage locks are still in their impenetrable plastic packets, and as the 7’oclock news yells Australian politics, election dates, and nauseating economic stats (89c AUD to USD – Kill me now), I’m sitting here watching a blinking green light.

It’s the flashing power bar of my new external battery. And it’s just struck me that I’m going to be watching this gadget charge on the other side of the world.

Over the next month, I’m going to become very familiar with this thing.

I’m  timing how long a full charge takes.

I’m going to start packing my bag tomorrow.

It keeps hitting me in waves, that I’m getting on a plane, that I’ve bought all my tickets and applied for my ESTA waiver, that my passport is sitting in a draw in the desk waiting for me.

I’ve made plans; they’ve changed shape, been tweaked and rethought, but I’ve stuck with them. Over the past two years I’ve put this all together.

I’m about to get on that plane.

Fuck me.

Apparently I’m about to head to Canada and the States all by my lonesome.

Ill be traveling back through time, loosing a day- a whole day- a day that i’ll never get back when I eventually head back home, return Down Under. (And really who says we’re ‘DOWN’ under, whose to say we’re not UP top?)

I’m going to see the Grand Canyon, I’m going to be navigating 11 airports, and goddam I hope my luggage survives 13 flights.

I’ll be seeing a baseball game in Detroit, Ill be visiting a State Fair in Texas; I’ll be checking out an Illustration College in Maryland, I’ll be wandering through the strip in Vegas.

Ha, Just think of the comic book stores in Chicago! The convention in Vancouver! The bookstores in Baltimore! I’ve got places to see, Mates to hug, CV’s to hand out like candy at the party run by the SPX team from Supernatural!

13 days to go.

So what have I forgotten?

Another Chapter

So…
I may or may not have been neglecting this blog. It’s been what? Seven months? Sheesh- In my defence can I just say that A LOT has happened.

Another chapter down- life’s galloping along, the worlds-a-change’n kinda jazz.

I finished my three year degree- I held and organised my Graduation Exhibition (300 guests SAY WHAT?), I’ve organised my second degree, I’ve moved out of Brisbane, i’ve been doing freelance work, I’ll be moving to Sydney next year, and I’ve organised my trip to Canada and the US- Oh did I not mention that before?

THE trip.

Yeah, so i’ve been saving my ass off, and Im about to head to Vancouver, Chicago, Baltimore, Austin, and Las VAGAS BABY over 42 days!

It’s the meaning of life- and damn i’m excited to get mine started! (Yes that’s corny as hell- but fuck it- IM EXCITED FOR THIS WORDLY DEVELOPMENT IN MY LIFE OKAY?)

I’m starting it all off with Salute to Supernatural, one of THE BEST Supernatural Conventions out there, and i’ve got gold tickets! Cocktail parties, breakfasts with the cast, Photos with Jensen and Jared and Location tours- i’m even heading to a SFX party run by the Special Effects crew who work on Supernatural, and I cannot wait to pick the brains of someone IN THE INDUSTRY! Not only am I going to be geeking out, but Im going to be networking and learning while I squee.

And there will be much squeeing.

Im not even going to try and lie about that.

Reason number two why this trip shall be RAD on every level, is that fact im going to be staying with my amazing mates from the States. Each stop is another friend and it’s past due we all hug in person!

The question left is do I create a blog solely  for my travel shenanigans or use this one?

Ahh well, i’ll leave you with two pictures I drew recently while i ponder this decision-

I’ll be back.

Sorry again its been so damn long 😦

SPN: Time and Place

Time and Place

I have the worst artblock.

It’s driving me insane, I’ve had three pictures I should have had done weeks ago, and every time i opened photoshop I just sat there, starring at the rough sketch or the blank bloody document and it just stared back. Waiting, insolent and smug, asking ‘whatcha gonna do eh? whatcha gonna do?’ and I just didn’t bloody know- so I took the high road and closed that little bitch of a program, and went back to watching Battlestar Galatica.

It’s been productive week to say the least…

I’m halfway through season two though.

But this was due today! And I guess the deadline got my ass in gear, because I started this at 10 30 last night, and posted it just in time by 3am. My plan for an early night kinda fell to pieces, kinda like the first sketch I had planned to finish, but luckily this one came together from scratch. I fell back on the background, and that alone is astounding- I used to HATE backgrounds, activley avoided them. They’re where painful, cruel, fiddely and just too big and now? I made the characters as small as possible because I just couldn’t be fucked and went to town with the rest of it.

Characters are usually my happy place.

Times are ‘a’changing.

Still got two more pictures I’ve gotta get done, but my hands a touch stiff this ‘morning so im going to take today off, head to see RedDawn with a mate, and hopefully get some sleep tonight with the party my Roomates hosting :/

Anywho, theres a little ficlet to go with the picture below the line

Hope you’ve all had a good one and are feeling creative and fresh!

SPN: Farmstead: First Snow

Fun colour pallet to work with! I’ve been focusing on warmer colours for so long that i’d almost forgotten about the whoolllleee other side of the spectrum, which is ridiculous becasue my favourite colour is teal!

So heres a snowy teal picture.

Being Australian, haven’t really gotten the chance to examine snow or snowy weather, but i hope I managed to get a bit of that ‘on coming storm/cold snap’ vibe.

This is part of my online prompt based Supernatural AU: The Farmstead, which is steadily becoming my happy place. Its also the best background and consistency project i’ve ever attempted, I used to HATE backgrounds. Now its my favourite part of drawing a scene, background, lighting, and of course figures.  I’m using the Farmstead as a tool, an exercise, in developing this new style which my arm is so happy with, and I’m  finding that i’m just loving the technical side of it! Focusing on perspective and playing with distance and mood as well as my usual story telling has been a ball.

And now I really need to get back to my Nano! Im falling behind and I’m determined to make it to the 50k again this year! So onward! CHARGE!

P.S a little ficlet below the cut 🙂

Giswhes: A trebuchet.

Item 112. Build a mechanical catapult that sends a pumpkin more than 100 feet across an open field. MUST be mechanical.

A trebuchet.

We built a trebuchet.

Out of 30 meters of rope, a tree, a bin, a hack saw, a swiss army knife, a goal post, the handle bars of a scooter, and sky potatoes.

And it BLOODY WELL worked! We threw that butternut about 28 metres!

Thank you Gishwhes!

Giswhes: Misha, a single stallion, The Queen, and steampunk fashion.

Item 35.

Can i just say, Misha Collins is glorious. I love that he uses his powers over his puppets for good; with random art and acts of kindness. He realised how much influence his fan base held and decided to make something of it.

He came from nothing, was homeless for a short time as a child until a family friend offered his family a room at their farm, this inspired Random Acts. He had an internship at the white house, built his house and all his furniture, is a published poet, created his wedding rings, and there are so many more things that just prove he is just a generally beautiful human being.

After meeting him, I can also say that he is ridiculously kind to his often rabid fans.

I for one, am proud to call myself his Minon.

P.S: There are too many limbs in this bloody picture- why are horses so damn hard to draw!

Gishwhes: Skittles.

So.

Many.

Skittles.

Item 40: Create a portrait of Jensen Ackles doing his ‘Blue Steel’ out of skittles, must be 2 foot x 2 foot.

So I left my ‘two feet’ in the picture for good measure, to be witty and to show how bloody big this thing was!

God damn, we were eating skittles for days.

I don’t even LIKE skittles!

…well, I didn’t after five days.

Gishwhes

Gishwhes was a thing of beauty.

Crazy, chaotic, random, creative beauty!

We had a week to create, find, and record 157 items in teams of 15 for Random acts, a charity created by Misha Collins, which is all about random acts of kindness, and has been helping a lot of people in Haiti.

May i just say that my lovely team: Team Auzombies, with exams and full time jobs, did an amazing job and i’m so proud to be a part of this group! We managed 47 of the items, and I wanted to share a few of my favourite ones with you!

This! Is Item 80.

‘Create a spaghetti gun and woven spaghetti hunting jacket and pose with it’. The gun was easy, with enough elastic bands anything is possible! But the jacket! The jacket was evil, pure fiddley frustration incarnate, held together with masking tape and hope.

And swearing.

Not sure how useful the swaring was, but there was a lot of it going on, so it merrits a mention.

But it held together just long enough for a few photos, so thats what mattered in the end.

hah, the guns still on my bedside table 🙂
