Do you think the reason that Mai and Ty lee were non-benders was because Azula would have felt threatened at the potential idea that they could of become better benders than her, and therefore making her less than perfect so she purposely chose friends who were ‘weaker’ than her?

She‘s the best bender from her generation and if they were benders she would’ve learned from them. She befriended them when she was a little child and I don’t thing she was very popular, so she became friends with people who liked her and who she liked. And because she’s the strongest she ‘chose’ people who were the strongest in different battle areas.
