I made a quick Goncharov moodboard because I am OBSESSED
While making dinner tonight, I very very fleetingly, but very seriously and legitimately thought “I should watch Goncharov tonight”
And then I Remembered.
straight people are so fascinating even when they aren't actively trying to be homophobic. I had a class a few years ago where one assignment was to summarize some eighth century arabic poetry about going out for drinks with the lads before indulging in some gay sex and like half the class came in and said "I'm sorry idk what was happening in this one, they mention having sex with a servant but they also say the servant's a man? where'd the woman come from? I'm so confused." and a few days ago in a shakespeare class I made a comment about how cleopatra and octavius caesar are kind of parallel characters in possessively bartering for mark antony's attention and one of my classmates responded as though I'd been talking about octavia and not caesar, despite the fact that I said "caesar" and "him" multiple times while describing the actions he specifically took. fully incapable of comprehending of anything that's even a little bit gay.
This reminds me of the time my class was discussing parallels between Hamlet and a novel we read for our Russian literature course. We spent like ten solid minutes on the Freudian reading of Hamlet being sexually attracted to his mother and that influencing his actions in the play.
After we had established the main character and his best friend/rival as having a relationship very similar to Hamlet and Horatio, one of my friends spoke up and asked whether we could then transfer the homoeroticism between Hamlet and Horatio onto these two characters. My professor looked vaguely confused and asked him to elaborate. He talked about the queer reading of Hamlet and how their relationship can be read as variably platonic or romantic. My professor thought for a second, then said pensively “I had never heard that before, that’s very interesting…”
Ma’am, you have self-admittedly read this play multiple times and looked into some of the scholarship. You just gave a lecture on Hamlet possibly being in love with his own mother, but the idea that he could be in love with his best friend—the one whom he talks about his soul having “sealed…for herself”—is completely foreign to you??? What???
discourse aside, one reason i headcanon enjolras as gay is because i think the way he would incorporate it into his worldview would be incredible. like i don’t think he would believe straight men actually exist. he would be arguing about how men are objectively more attractive than women since they are of course superior intellectually, physically, etc. so naturally one will be attracted to a man over a woman but it is the duty of citizens to form patriotic unions whence come new citizens that will be raised to cherish the Republic and patrie. thus the beauty of a woman is not physical but the way in which she assumes the form of the Republic herself in bringing forth citizens that will be suckled at the breast of Liberty, drinking the milk of Equality. thus while a man may hold great affection, nay admiration for a woman as she performs her sacred duty, it is impossible to compare to the love a man feels for his equal in the bonds of Fraternity, his brother in arms who valiantly guides him towards the new dawn of the ages. obviously you all only have mistresses for clout.
and everyone is like ENJOLRAS WHAT
