to the person who sent me an anon ask about a particular person using iNaturalist: I know, but they have also requested that inat users not mention this outside the website and allow them to keep it private. I’m not posting the ask for that reason and I recommend you don’t go around posting about it either. Respect their wishes

@cutenconfused ? Not entirely sure what’s being asked. If you mean my tone, neutral, I don’t blame anon for not knowing, but I think its something important to keep in mind, hence the post. If you mean “am I positive about this” yes, the person in question has stated it multiple times
disregard this if you have, but if you haven’t you should definitely post these to inaturalist! you’ve got a great variety and great photos
[Images Description: Several photographs of American Kestrels being grasped by hand. The birds are small raptors that are about the same size as an adult human’s hand and are easily held. /End ID.]
Get grabbed on.
The birds are being handled for research purposes by licensed professionals.

@rjalker
they usually use mist nets to catch them, they look like this

they check them regularly, remove the birds when they get caught and then band and release them
the tags on the original say gray hawk, but this is actually a peregrine falcon

@ilikeit-art This is just a quick overview, because I’m not a falcon expert. Kestrel can chime in if I’ve forgotten anything. I can go more into detail on gray hawks if you’d like
A peregrine has a black “hood” on the head, a clear breast, a black barred belly band and a yellow eye ring

A gray hawk is uniformly gray, with slightly darker barring across the entirety of the breast, a head the same color as the rest of the body, and no yellow eye ring

In flight, peregrines have a much more triangular flight silhouette, consistent dark barring across the underside of the wings, and a dark gradient and terminal band on the tail. A gray hawk has a much broader flight silhouette, light gray wings with faint barring and a dark terminal band around the edges, and a thickly barred black and white tail

Studying for a bird quiz like

hey op, if you want any tips/good tricks for differentiating hawks, feel free to dm me!
Aww, thanks a bunch, but I’m fine! I only needed hawks for this one quiz and am taking the course for fun. Though, my friend is more serious about bird watching so I’ll relay any questions she has, if that’s ok!
Of course! Feel free to pass on any questions! My expertise is in accipitriformes, but I can provide resources for other birds as well

Buzzard is an ambiguous identifier for a wide range of species. In Eurasia (the ‘Old World’) it refers to Buteo hawks, which are similar to the Red-tail. However, in the Americas (the ‘New World’) it mostly refers to carrion eaters such as vultures with Buteo hawks either being referred to as Buteos or buzzard hawks.
(Red-tailed hawk)
This post is a bit misleading, so some clarifications
it refers to Buteo hawks, which are similar to the Red-tail.
Not similar to, but red tailed hawks(buteo jamaicensis) are in fact also in the genus buteo. Eurasian buteos are almost always referred to as buzzards, this is true. However, the usage of buzzard gets even more ambiguous than that. “Honey Buzzards” refer to genus pernis, which aren’t even closely related to genus buteo. They are pernine kites. Same for the Lizard Buzzard(kaupifalco monogrammicus)
See buteos are up here in “buteonines”. Note how far away pernine kites and kaupifalco are from it. Old world vultures are actually more closely related to “true buzzards” than honey buzzards are
(Though new world vultures are not related to old world vultures. They aren’t even accipitriformes)

with Buteo hawks either being referred to as Buteos or buzzard hawks.
They are not referred to as buzzard hawks. All buteos in the Americas are simply called “hawks”, though not everything in buteonines is. Genus buteogallus includes both Great Black Hawks and Solitary Eagles. Hawk, eagle, buzzard, and so on aren’t actual taxonomic categories. It’s like a fish. This isn’t even getting into Hawk-Eagles and so on.
The real lesson we should learn here is that common names mean nothing taxonomically, and in accipitriformes they definitely mean nothing. I’m looking at you kaupifalco.
@doodlepede good* news, none of the birds shown would have taken the bait. argentavis is a scavenger and ate carrion, pelagornis were seabirds and ate fish, and omimegalonyx ate largeish rodents. the only bird megafauna i could think that would hunt people would be Haast’s eagle, which ate Moa so…
*good news if you don’t want a bird megafauna themed human sacrifice religion. as the guy who made an animal crossing island themed around a megafauna cult, i might be biased
this meme is only funny to 3 people and none of them use tumblr

@rjalker broad winged hawk! in accipitriforme and especially buteo ID its really common for birders to misidentify any given raptor as a BWHA and get tetchy when corrected(and refuse to update their ID :/). Presumably because its rarer I think? Either way, its become a meme among me and my friends who do raptor ID
