like okay to elaborate on this obviously they couldn’t go super explicit because this was disney in 2003, but in the original idea for the film jack and captain barbossa were like. confirmed as having been in a relationship and while a lot of it was obviously cut what you need to know about the original pirates of the caribbean set was that it was like. almost lawless so some of that did make it through to the film like for example this line
and just in how the two of them interact with each other like in this shot for example
and we see more of this in the later movies like this bit in at world’s end
and this bit in on stranger tides

I was rereading the Song of Achilles, and I knew Miller used foreshadowing before, obviously about Hercules’ wife and being left alone, and the “there are no happy heros” scene, but I am just now noticing how Peleus’ story by the fireside was foreshadowing too. I was so busy focusing on Achilles and Patroclus messing around (and by the way, I mean the scene where Achilles grabs Patroclus’ ankle and is practically pulling him out of his seat and his dad is just like ‘wtf kid, why aren’t you listening,’ and then tells Achilles to go sleep with the servant girl and he is like 'nah man, I’m tired’) but anyway, his father is telling him a story about an amazing soldier who was offended by a king who wants to take from him and his gifts, and out of pride, stops fighting for him (a.k.a. what happened between Achilles and Agamemnon), like Achilles’ father was trying to warn him, but the teenage boy was too busy focusing on getting the attention of his best friend and love of his life, like no wonder this dude’s downfall was pride

i think one of the saddest things about “the song of achilles” is achilles’ change in personality throughout the book. the first half or so, he’s a boy who seeks adventures, a boy who laughs all the time, a boy with light and hope in his eyes. a boy who says he will be the first happy hero.
and then, he is the hero. the legend. the one who will lead them to victory. but with that comes darker things. with that, he becomes the boy who can defeat twenty-five men at once, the boy who can kill a man from an impossible distance, the boy who you should be scared of.
the final change that comes is after patroclus’ death. after that, he becomes the boy who seeks vengeance, the boy who cried so loud the skies shook, the boy who has a part of his soul missing.
