Wolf and Shepherd is a Hawkahy werewolf fic. I have a trilogy planned, and book 1, "Dog Tags", is done. Hawkeye is bitten by a patient, and over the next three days, he slowly goes insane, ultimately running off into the woods at Francis's direction. When he returns, he's half-transformed, in immense pain from said partial shift, and has delirious amnesia, but has enough awareness not to attack anyone. Even when his mind returns to him, Hawkeye can't turn back to his human form even after the full moon is past, because he's fighting opposing drives -- stay in a more powerful form to be better able to protect his people vs turn to his human form which is what he really wants. While he, Trapper, and Francis are hanging out in the river, Francis is shot by an unknown sniper, and the opposing drives are joined -- Hawkeye has to be in his human form to operate, and if he stays in wolf form, Francis may die.
The sequel, "Kill on Sight", is an investigation into the unknown sniper. It's discovered that he's from the 2038th, which is a bit infamous -- they do good work, but they have rampant AWOL behavior, to the point that there hasn't been a single complete head count in the past year. It's also discovered that they're actively hunting werewolves, as well as letting lycan casualties die. Hawkeye, Francis, and Trapper go over in secret and discover that the chaplain of the 2038th has turned the unit into a bit of a cult, instructing them to hunt all evildoers. The 2038th discovers Hawkeye is a werewolf and intends to make an example of him. In the ensuing fight, one of their people manages to hack off one of Hawkeye's paws as a trophy. It's successfully reattached, and it will fully heal with enough lunar shifts, but that's not nearly fast enough for the army, and Hawkeye is sent home, potentially for good.
The finale, "Human Names for Animal Things", is post-canon. Hawkeye has been home for a few years, and while he's not out as a werewolf, it's a bit of an open secret that Crabapple Cove has a really big black wolf that hangs around. After a depressive episode, his father tells him to go in search of whatever it is he needs, and Hawkeye goes off to find Francis. When they meet, they live together for a few weeks, and then Francis tells Hawkeye that he thinks a lunar shift or two might fix his hearing. Hawkeye, of course, is overjoyed that Francis wants to become a werewolf, but he's a bit concerned that he's willing to do something so antithetical to his faith. Hawkeye does turn him, though, and the two return home as mates.
I'm expecting this series to be about 75,000 words in total, judging by the 22k on this draft of Dog Tags. (For those of you who know me, Dog Tags is the thing I wrote in a five-day fugue state of pure Hawkahy hyperfixation.)
