Trying to find examples of themed restaurants (& etc.) outside of the US/Canada/UK & the coverage is so bad. Obv bc coverage is spotty in English - and sometimes there isn't much coverage in the original language, either - but also it's just. Bad in all the ways Western media discussing other countries is bad

One that keeps coming up is this one in Beirut: Buns and Guns, a military themed restaurant that was covered widely as a niche curiosity in 2008. I don't think it lasted much beyond that, but I can't find much information beyond that initial flurry of stories

Written coverage of this, naturally, plays up exoticism, talking about the Situation in Lebanon, and noting the veils worn by female patrons. They talk about how strange it is to have a restaurant themed to war & play up that it was in an area controlled by Hezbollah to imply that it was, like, a Hezbollah themed restaurant

So anyway this is Mission BBQ. It is a military-themed American chain. Every day at noon, every location (142+!) does this

And like, don't get me wrong: a restaurant themed to the military with menu items named after weapons is bizarre and novel no matter the context. But nobody's lavishing attention on Mission BBQ, a chain of over a hundred restaurants that demands a literal loyalty ritual from patrons every single day. Nobody's writing articles called "restaurant in MAGA-controlled Florida demands patrons pledge loyalty to leader, complicating the the Situation in America"

I ate at a Mission BBQ during noon once without knowing they did this, and it was so fucking weird and off-putting.

Nobody cared that I just say there finishing my chicken and thinking "what the fuck," because I wasn't even the only person there doing that, but I never, ever went back. It's bad enough I get this shit at hockey games, it isn't worth it for, frankly, overpriced, dry chicken and mediocre at best cornbread.

"Should trans women be allowed to compete in women's sports" I don't think there should be women's sports. I think it's a silly artificial construction that only upholds the gender binary while it's benefits are incidental and would be better addressed directly.

Care about giving people with different body types and muscle mass a shot? Split your league by weight categories like boxing, or some other direct physical measurement. Gender is at best a poor proxy for these and we only do it because we still treat women are a different species. "But that still wouldn't be fully fair to everyone?" Sport isn't fully fair, it's about rewarding people with the most biological advantage. That's the whole point of it.

You want to give more sporting opportunity to women and minorities specifically? Okay then do that. Create your own opportunities league, but if we're giving up the pretense that it's about essential biological advantage then you better let trans women in.

What's that, the extra league would be treated as a novelty afterthought and would lack the prestige of the real main event? You mean like how women's events were treated when they were introduced? True! In fact women's leagues are still largely treated as secondary now, and you know how we can fix it? Make the main leagues open to everyone with weight, height or muscle mass categories so that people with different body types can excel. Like I suggested before. Problem solved.

someone mentioned that this is just duskmourn but the thing is it isnt. wotc decided to put only 4 whole demon cards into the main set whereas in tarkir dragonstorm so far they have spoiled 21 dragons. thats such a large number and really drives home that this is the dragon plane whereas duskmourn had no demon identity outside of its main villain. and even tho i love valgavoth they did not print enough demons for my liking so im still holding out hope for a mostly demon plane

my girlfriend also mentioned that isnt this new capenna but that set only had 5 demons, the crime family leaders, in it and they were only demons on a surface level and not indicative of the set as a whole so we still dont have a set that gets the same treatment as dragons unfortunately
