Oh my god holy shit...

Holy shit, I fucking understand the impact the Norse myths have...oh my god, I'm sobbing. 😭

I get it now. Like actually.

I would love details!! ♥

Imagine that you are three years old, living on an Iron Age farm nestled deep within the mountains of Scandinavia. Each night when your mother tucks you into bed, she tells you a story about the gods and their farm, called Asgard.

You learn that the gods have a big tree protecting their farm just like the one protecting yours. It's called Yggdrasil. It's got snakes beneath it just like your tree has.

You learn how Odin and Frigg are wise like every grandpa and grandma are. You learn Odin got his wisdom from exploring the world. You also learn he's a badass chief because he wins every battle he fights and his warriors always come out victorious.

You learn how Thor keeps the frost giants away with his hammer, so whenever you hear thunder in the distance, you know it's because Thor smashed a giant that may have otherwise eaten you. You have no fear of the frost giants getting you because Thor's hammer never misses.

You learn how Loki is always causing everyone problems (and solutions) with his clever antics, and the reason why is because he's the mover of stories—stories would be boring without him. He becomes your favorite playmate.

You live in the Iron Age. It is a violent time. But you learn that if you die in battle far from home, Odin—the Allfather, who is everyone's grandpa—has room for you at his table.

These stories would have been the things that shaped the Norse people's understanding of the world, back in a time when information about the world was unknown. All of it was designed to make children feel safe, courageous, and like they belonged in the fabric of all things. And it's not like Santa Claus, where you're expected to stop believing in the gods after a certain age. They would be with you your entire life.

When you think about it, the mjolnir pendant is ultimately a symbol of love; a reminder that "whenever you're afraid, just say Thor's name, and in an instant he will be here to protect you."

You can write down as many correspondences as you want, memorize entire lists from someone else's blog or book or whatever, but none of it will matter if you do not understand those correspondences. It's so critically important to ask "Why?"

Why is spirit purple? Why is love red? Why is chamomile calm? Why is quartz "all purpose"? Why does cinnamon speed up a spell?

Why, why, why?

What do you actually believe? And why?

THIS! THIS THIS THIS GODFUCKINGDAMNI THIS!

So many witches just parrot the same correspondences to things - colors, elements, plants, planets, crystals, whatever. And I would bet MONEY that most of us don't even know where those correspondences come from or why the associations are there.

I mean, spoiler alert, a good chunk of them are just Things Somebody Made Up Once And It Stuck (-cough- crystals). Others are based on older associations from alchemy, astrology, or medicine (back when the doctor would draw up your natal chart as part of your diagnosis and treatment).

It's fine to go with the "standard" Western Correspondence Canon if it resonates with you. But PLEASE, at some point, do just a little bit of background research into the origins of the things you use most often. Just to have the context. Even just to have the Oh That's Kind Of Neat. (We should all be doing practical research alongside magical learning anyway.)

(And yes, you CAN make up your own correspondences if you find that something doesn't fit.)

If u want to write a story about a character that’s just you but hotter with a dark twisted backstory and magical powers and a pet falcon or something, I think u should just go ahead and do that. Who’s gonna stop you? The government?? Fuck the police.

What if someone barges in, points at said character and scream, “Mary Sue!”

Tell them to come back with a warrant

This post came across my dash again and now I am having an absolute blast with self insert hotter me that gets the girls and guys everywhere.

This is the Way

need a permission slip? have a permission slip

my existentialism professor once showed us this meme and then said softly “reintarnation” and started laughing for about 5 minutes straight but he was laughing so softly we thought he was crying and didn’t know what to do about it

Ever notice how any time someone calls you "cringe", 99 times out of 100 what they mean is "you're happy and I don't like it"

No one ever calls bullying cringe. No one ever calls rudeness cringe. No one ever calls toxic negativity cringe. Only hobbies get called cringe. Only enjoying things get called cringe. Only jokes and mannerisms and interests get called cringe.

Personally I've never been a fan of the "magic is a beast that needs to be tamed" metaphor. Magic is more like the ocean: powerful, terrifying, capable of unbridled force. But at the same time, it is gentle, warm, the lifeblood of millions of people. The folk who know the ocean know you cannot harness it's force, you must work within or around it, lest it destroy you. Similarly, magic is great and terrible and gentle and kind, all at once. And those who work with it need to work WITH it, not reign over it. Because the primordial forces have no rules about biting the hand that feeds you.

I think any inanimate thing you regularly care for becomes a little alive.

Quick question: Have you ever heard of either animism or panentheism?

Cause this is kind of those.

I have heard of animism and pantheism yes.

more importantly have u ever heard of the velveteen rabbit?

cuz this is exactly that

I am aware of many things.

Have you heard the lone cricket cry in the cool, cool grass?

have you heard of armored core 6 that game fucking rules

Armorws core 6 so badass...

I've met a wannabe occultist who didn't know who Hestia was (or more specifically that she was a Greek deity), which is bizarre given that she's an occultist.

Hey nobody comes out the pussy knowing who Hestia is. I don't think I could name more than 3 or 4 Hindu gods off the top of my head.

Honestly, the occult is so huge and varied that depending on where you get into it, it's pretty easy to miss anything you might think of as common knowledge. And most of the occult just does not revolve around Greek gods, so.

ok but like how can you be into magic if it doesn't exist... I'm so confused i thought it was a bit

I mean, magic is a thing that people do, and have been doing for tens of thousands of years. I'm just continuing that tradition. Whether or not supernatural forces get involved isn't really relevant to the existence of magic, as I see it. Magic is just the steps we take. It is an attempt to effect change.

My feeling is that it doesn't really matter if the magic I do has any supernatural effects. It's cool when it seems to work, and it's enrichment for my enclosure, even when it doesn't.

Why do people have sex when they aren't trying to reproduce? Why do they snack when they aren't actually hungry? Some actions are enjoyable and satisfying in and of themselves, outside of fulfilling their primary purpose. The study and performance of magic is like that (at least to me -- other people are a lot more results-oriented).

Doing magic allows me to think about and engage with the world in a different way than if I maintained a purely materialist view of it. It's a way to connect to our ancestors from thousands of years ago, even if the magic I'm doing takes a completely different shape from their practices. And it's fun! I'm not like a true believer in the supernatural. I am open to the possibility of it not being a thing. Still, we do the magic. Does the magic do anything? I don't fucking know! But with that said, I have Experienced Some Shit, and I like to keep an open mind.

So yeah. It's a thing I really do, but it's also a bit. After all, sufficiently advanced witchcraft is indistinguishable from shitposting.
