thinking about how will graham called hannibal in mizumono, assuming he would leave. thinking about how he, in that moment, makes his choice; not between jack and hannibal, not between moral and immoral, not between “good” and “evil” but to run and to hide with his tail tucked between his legs. thinking about how he so desperately wanted to let hannibal escape, with no regards to his own future, hoping for his safety but praying even harder that he wouldn’t be forced to confront the reality of who he really is, what he can really be. thinking about how, even though season 2 is entirely about his choice, he fights tooth and nail to not *have* to choose, to not have to admit to his guilt, his enjoyment, until he chooses to push them off that cliff, embracing and smearing blood onto one another, almost 4 years later. thinking about how everyone talks about how he betrayed hannibal but not how he betrayed himself while attempting to keep hannibal safe from him (the consequences of his inability to choose a side, to commit to him) and himself safe from hannibal (to be dragged into a reality he isn’t ready to embrace), unaware at this point how deeply conjoined they are. thinking about how we see hannibal give him at least 5 different opportunities to choose him, to simply admit, while he pretends to not understand the implications of the words spoken to him, willing himself to ignorance. thinking about how, even though he needs and, more importantly, knows that he *wants* his family, wants hannibal and abigail, he cant bring himself to utter the words needed to stop the teacup from shattering, over and over, until he’s left bleeding out on that kitchen floor, with the shards of what could have been piercing into their daughter’s corpse.
