Bogdan B. liked thisBogdan B. liked thisWhen I was at VMware, we turned around the platform and the product, so much so that a utility that enabled migration to vSphere had to be resurrected from the dead. If you remember the *VMware vCenter Converter Standalone*, it was abandoned software. But thanks to the remarkable resurgence of the vSphere platform, and the love customers had for it, I was reviewing architecture specs and designs on how we could enable it for customers moving off AWS and onto vSphere. Before that turnaround, VMware folks would ask: how do we prevent people from leaving our platform? The implication was that the solution was some technical device, some API change. My answer was: "Have a better product that customers want." So we focused on that. How times change.

Десетки хора чакат на опашка не за заслона, не за вода, не за храна, а за снимка. Защото преживяването се превърна в съдържание. Понякога имам чувството, че не живеем моментите, а ги произвеждаме за социалните мрежи. Най-парадоксалното е, че колкото повече се стремим да покажем колко специално е едно преживяване, толкова повече го превръщаме в масов продукт. Истинският връх тук не е Мусала. Истинският връх е да можеш да оставиш телефона за десет минути и просто да се насладиш на момента, гледката и самото изживяване.

Bogdan B. liked thisBogdan B. liked thisI don't understand how people with an engineering background can say something like: "we need to trust LLMs because we already trust compilers". What? 😮🤯 Deterministic and reproducible compilers and stochastic LLMs? In the software industry EVERYTHING is built on determinism. We trust compilers not because they are good, but because of the following: Your source files are deterministically compiled into byte code. After verifying that your byte code does exactly what is desired (via manual or automated testing) it equates to the fact that your source code is verified. Because source code and byte code are equivalent! Which is absolutely not the case between spec and your LLM generated source code. If LLMs were deterministic, we would easily only commit specs into git and regenerate the app on CI (well, it has to be incremental, which may not be the case). So as long as LLMs are non-deterministic, unfortunately we cannot treat them the same way as we treat compilers and other deterministic tools.

Last quarter, a client told me bluntly, "No fintech background, no chance." We were hunting for a Senior AI Engineer for a $12M Series A startup, and he dismissed my first two candidates after a 10-second resume scan because they hadn't touched financial transactions. On our Friday brief I told him to look at what a candidate built instead of scanning for fintech keywords. I had a healthcare AI engineer in the pipeline who had shipped production models, and I persuaded him to test her architectural thinking instead of rejecting her CV. Every strong AI engineer I've placed from a different vertical before picked up domain context within weeks. The hard part is building production systems that don't break, and she'd already done that. He hired her and eight weeks later, she shipped their core production model. Do you have cases of successful cross-domain hiring?

Bogdan B. liked thisBogdan B. liked thisWe’re accumulating code faster than we’re accumulating trust. This phrase hit me hard today. We thought, narrowly, that code was what we produced. That was only half of it. We also produced, one safe deployment at a time, one needed improvement at a time, we produced trust. Three responses: * Oh well, we’ll just have to learn to live without being able to trust programs & programmers. * We need to slow down code production to match the production of trust. * We need to learn to accumulate trust faster.

I failed my .NET interview last month. Badly. The question: "Explain garbage collection in .NET." I froze. I'd been coding in .NET for 2 years. Built entire applications. But couldn't explain how .NET actually works under the hood. The interviewer saw it in my face. I knew how to code. But I didn't understand the fundamentals. That day hurt.
