In Germany and Austria, racism shapes mental health care. According to the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), around two-thirds of Black people in both countries experience racial discrimination, with many reporting lasting impacts on their wellbeing. Yet those most affected often face barriers when seeking support. In Hungary, decades of exclusionary policies have created a deeply segregated education system for Roma children. Schools with majority Roma students are routinely underfunded, understaffed, and left to deteriorate. Many Roma students in integrated schools are funnelled into segregated classes, whilst they’re excluded from church-run schools altogether. More than half of Romania’s ancient forests are situated within EU-protected Natura 2000 areas – a EU-wide network designed to conserve key species and habitats. Despite this, unregulated logging in the southern Carpathian mountains is decimating the country’s forests. Whilst NGOs fight to save Romania’s forests, some locals say conservation efforts have made daily life harder, as rising firewood prices deepen energy poverty in rural communities. Romania’s forests sit at the centre of a growing conflict between environmental protection, economic survival, and local livelihoods.
