A Daily Disappointment

@b0nes-mcgee

Art and spam. But mostly spam. My name is Kat, in my 20s and studying animation ✨

OK but I do genuinely believe we need to push for something like this before it's too late - and not just in digital spaces. We should have the right to peace and quiet from advertising. There should be more limits on how much and where we get advertising because otherwise it'll just become a creep of more and more until every fucking public space is lit with several billboards blasting us with ads, and the walls between spaces lined with ads, and our commutes filled with ads, and local parks sponsored by corporations to offset the cost of local councils, and so on and on and on and on. No. I need quiet. I need spaces where ads cannot touch me.

There are places working on it! Here's some:

Grenoble, France, in 2014 banned any new billboards and took down the city owned ones in a step towards de-advertizing public spaces. They swapped out the billboards with trees btw!

The city of Nantes in western France has recently banned most electronic billboards, dismantling 110 in one night. The municipality is also cutting digital advertising in shop windows and on the public transport system. It’s also banned all advertising near schools. Which is apart of Frances over all goal to reduce visual noise and light.

In 2009, Chennai, India prohibiting billboards, digital banners and placards in public spaces.

São Paulo Brazil created a law "Lei Cidade Limpa" (Portuguese for clean city law) in 2006

Several states, namely Maine, Vermont, Hawaii, and Alaska have banned Billboards and have been working on other electronic ad bans.

This article goes over what some other locations might look like without such advertising

So just know these kinda policies are possible! Whether your in Europe where the UN is working on anti-Ad legislation, in the US, or South America!

Spell of Ad Removal

Like to charge, reblog to cast

This YouTube comment had me leaning hands braced on knees like that person who had to take their shirt off to process Destiel becoming canon.

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck

It’s called dark oxygen because it’s produced without any light fueled chemical reactions such as photosynthesis - instead, it’s produced by water electrolysis, an oxidation/reduction reaction occurring due to metallic nodules with differing electrostatic potentials on the sea floor. In essence, a natural electric current is splitting seawater into hydrogen and oxygen.

It’s not called dark oxygen because it’s made of dark matter or anything like that, if anyone was wondering.

dark oxygen, show me the forbidden electron orbitals

let’s all hold hands and think about louis binge drinking alcohol to cope as a human contrasted with his refusal to drink blood & starving himself to cope as a vampire

honestly i don’t think we talk enough about louis’ alcoholism prior to his transition into vampirism. the days are for sleeping off the nights previous damage, i got nothing but broken souls around me, im a liar im a drunk im a coward, i look in the mirror i know what i am, floating on a sea of vodka, etc.

whenever characters have a weird dad and a missing/dead/unmentioned mom the fandom tendency is to assume she's normal to balance it out. but it's always valid to instead assume she matched his freak. that she was freakier. if canon won't give you enough insane women to work with it's always morally correct to fill in the blanks with your own

starting to suspect that tech bros actually just don’t know what reading is

I know I just reblogged this but I think the really important takeaway here is that this techbro is not genuinely asking “how can we improve fanfiction?” What he’s asking is “how can we tap into this massive market?”

I keep thinking about how many of these chat bots are free—for now. And of course they are! It’s a classic marketing technique when you’re trying to get your foot in the door with a novel product: let folks use it, let them get used to it, then start charging for it. You don’t have to look any further than streaming to see a very recent example of how this happens.

And it’s going to happen with AI.

There’s nothing these assholes love more than making money off of other people’s hard work. But you can’t legally charge for fanfic! So how do you get around that? You charge for a chat bot (which you trained on other people’s fanfic). You can’t charge for the content, but you can charge for the thing that produces the content.

AI is theft, and there are a whooooole lot of people gleefully looking to make a buck off of our hard work.

Don’t use AI, don’t feed AI your favorite fic writers’ and artists’ work, don’t read AI fic, don’t engage with it. And if you do, well, I can’t force you to give a shit about other people, but AI is a paywall being built, brick by brick, between you and the things you love. Stop slathering on the mortar.

Reblogging for yet another coherent anti-plagiarism argument as well as another reminder for folks to lock your AO3 fics
