Nic Scarce reposted thisNic Scarce reposted thisThis week the UK media led with the story that going forward social media would be treated as the new smoking. In essence the concept that technology had become toxic. This narrative follows Australia’s social media ban (the proposed/rolling restrictions focused on under-16s) is basically a mainstream-policy acknowledgement that “toxic technology” means products optimized for engagement can create predictable harms (addiction loops, anxiety, bullying, sexual exploitation risks, sleep disruption, attention fragmentation), and the cost lands on kids and their parents while platforms capture the upside. All of this indicates Social harm at scale: from the bullying/harassment, grooming, pile-ons. To the insidious growth of Data extraction: profiling minors, targeted ads, dark patterns. Yet the ban/restrictions are a blunt instrument aimed at reducing exposure during a critical developmental window of children. By forcing platforms to implement age assurance and safer defaults the responsibility is shifted from families to platforms and the government. Yet this trade-off also creates the danger of what happens to adults who have not been presented the perils of social media which are all to real but still unavoidable in a modern life. Essentially the technology literacy of young adults may be harmed and this becomes more pertinent as the impact of AI grows. Firstly the damaging aspects of social media will pale besides the harm AI can bring especially if the AI owners are allowed to operate with the same freedom from responsibility as is gifted to social platforms. The good news here is the AI titans appear more aware of their responsibility Anthropic particularly stands out. This may be a reflection of how obvious the negative aspects of AI are to us. Secondly at the heart of social media growth was a distortion they offered a product for free and kept the fact that they were using the data to generate vast income behind a curtain. This lack of transparency seemed to corrode a bigger sense of responsibility to user in general. If blanket bans may not to the best solution it seems that social platforms, AI engines, government and consumer need to come together to protect all of us not just children.

Human divers are still the state of the art for most ocean science and conservation. Yes, really. Coral reefs around the world are unmonitored, leading to ineffective management. Coastal ecosystems generate minimal data, making it hard to use AI properly. This photo from Fiji is one of those places. We have top nonprofit and science partners throughout the Pacific. These are my business trips these days. Life is too short to sit in an office all day. Right? Want to help the ocean and make super cool AI robots with a couple Google X alumni? Ping me.

At yesterday’s Academic Honours Assembly, we celebrated students recognised for their commitment to learning and academic excellence. Earlier in the week, our Principal, Matt Corbett, and Director of Teaching and Learning, Mark Solomons, welcomed students from Years 7 to 12 to a special Learning That Matters lunch with members of the All Saints Learning Team. Building on insights from last year's student survey, students shared honest reflections on what helps them learn, feel supported and thrive. They spoke openly about their experiences, offered thoughtful ideas and imagined what great learning could look like in the future. The lunch also provided a wonderful example of learning in action, with our Year 12 Hospitality students preparing and serving the lunch for their younger peers, showcasing their own learning in a meaningful way. Congratulations to all students recognised this week, and thank you to everyone who generously shared their experiences and ideas.

Nic Scarce reacted on thisLoved heading back to the Women of Influence QLD Annual Great Debate yesterday morning - This year's topic was a tough one: Confidence vs. Competence. At work. Surely you need both, right? But the debate really got me looking at this through two practical lenses: 1. From the interview seat Having spent a fair bit of time on both sides of the interview table, confidence is usually what we walk away remembering (or kick ourselves for not having). Candidates only get their foot in the door based on competence. Yet, as interviewers, we often walk away thinking, "That person owned the room," or, "Oof, that was hard work." It’s easy to automatically favour the "wow" factor. But often, the "fake it till you make it" crowd don’t deliver. Give me competence any day in the workplace. Look, if you're a bit dull - we might not be having a beer after work, but you can do your job, and we can get things done. 2. From the consumer's perspective When I engage with a brand or a new company, I always head straight for the 'About Us' section. I want to see the real people behind the work. More importantly, I want to know what their actual competencies are before I trust them. A thought-provoking morning with a brilliant panel and many laugh out loud moments. The ‘Confidence’ team at times had me questioning my initial stance but ultimately the ‘Competence’ teams arguments reaffirmed it – in the workplace your competence makes you a keeper. But in my personal life, I’m unashamedly drawn to the confident crowd—give me a somewhat wild, captivating personality any day of the week!Nic Scarce reacted on thisThe team spent the morning at the Women of Influence Annual Great Debate at RACV Royal Pines Resort. The topic sparked plenty of conversation: “Is confidence more important than competence in the workplace?” While the Affirmative team put up a brilliant fight, the Opposing team ultimately brought home the official victory.
