Most Australian organisations are treating AI like a productivity hack. That's a mistake. PwC's 29th Global CEO Survey reveals a striking pattern: many organisations are aiming for moderate productivity gains of 10–20% through AI augmentation — chatbots, automation of routine tasks. Meanwhile, organisations adopting AI-first design principles are seeing ROI of 200–400%. That's not a marginal difference. That's a fundamentally different outcome. The gap comes down to how AI is being integrated. There's a world of difference between: ❌ Bolting AI onto existing workflows ✅ Redesigning your entire operating model around AI-first principles The survey is clear — the real opportunity lies in comprehensive transformation: embedding AI into the value chain from the ground up, not as an add-on, but as the core design principle. And yet only 18% of Australian companies have built strong AI foundations. The organisations that made material AI investments two years ago are now capturing outsized profitable growth. Their global peers are reporting revenue gains from AI at more than twice the rate of Australian businesses. The question for every CEO isn't "should we invest in AI?" It's "are we redesigning our operating model to make AI work as a growth engine — not just a cost tool?" That's the work.
