Nicky said the twins chose to study German because Nicky could help them pass, and I don’t doubt that was part of it, but I wonder if they chose it as a sort of apology, too. We’re sorry you left Germany to take care of us; we’ll learn German so you have something of it to bring home with you. And their fluency is interesting, too. Two years of foreign language in high school won’t get you that far, and none of them are studying it in college, so I wonder if they used German at home a lot, to make Nicky miss it less? To make him feel more at home with them?

Or maybe it was Nicky pushing them to use it at home. He’s got these two traumatized cousins that he’s responsible for, so he tries to share something of himself with them, to show them they can share pieces of themselves too. Maybe Nicky started refusing to speak to them in English because he knows that emergence is the best way to learn a language, and maybe he can’t raise them or heal them but he can teach them this. He didn’t know hot to give them a home, so he gave them a piece of his. And you know, maybe the twins let him, and accepted what Nicky was giving them to make up for the fact that they couldn’t give him anything. Or didn’t trust himself or themselves enough to try. Maybe small parts of each of them could understand that this was the little way they could be a family, even if that was all they had. Idk, you got me thinking man
