Dishonored 2 sales down 38% on first game in UK charts

It’s been an underwhelming launch for Dishonored 2, as Call Of Duty: Infinite Warfare earns itself another week at number one.

Bethesda’s cerebral first person adventure Dishonored 2 looks to have been another casualty of the Christmas games rush, entering only at number four in the all formats chart and selling 38% less than the original.

The first game did very well when it launched in early October 2012, but by releasing a month later the sequel has hit right in the middle of the rush, and follows several straight weeks of major first person shooter releases – including last week’s Call Of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

Since Bethesda refused to provide advance review copies gamers may see it as too much of an unknown quantity at a busy, and expensive, time of year. And although the PlayStation 4 version got to number four in the individual formats chart the Xbox One version had to settle for number 11.

For Infinite Warfare it was a second week at number one, with its drop in sales of 65% being normal for a major title (Skyrim was down by 64% in its second week). Sales of FIFA 17 rose by 6% this week, while in its third week Battlefield 1 dropped by 39%.

Although neither made it into the individual formats chart there were two other entries in the all formats, with Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization reaching number 33. VR game Eagle Flight soared as high as number 39, while the more expensive, but higher profile, Robinson: The Journey failed to chart in the top 40.

Most of the other movement in the charts was due to retailer discounts, with Forza Horizon 3 sales up 60%, Overwatch up 144%, and Lego Dimensions up a whopping 556%. Star Wars: Battlefront sales also increased by 30%, with DLC relating to the new movie on the way soon – as well as a promised free VR spin-off.

The biggest release of this week is tomorrow’s Watch Dogs 2, and it will be very interesting to see if that manages to knock Call Of Duty from the top spot. Sony console exclusive Killing Floor 2 is also released on Friday, along with a new wave of Lego Dimensions packs.
