Answer:
You should read it as an A!
I started writing it as a triangle years ago as a Quirky Teen and I could probably stop doing it, now, but at this point I feel like it’s a part of me…. My precious quirky triangle A……..

Answer:
I like this question because it gives me a chance to think about the world outside of Eth’s little sphere, which is something I admittedly haven’t done very much!
So to start: while there are a lot of Townships in near-ish proximity to each other, realistically I think it’s safe to say that while things in Eth’s bubble are stable (and growing: they talk about expanding their home Township to make more room for new families), the global (human) population is absolutely in a slow but definite decline. The people of Eth’s Skin inhabit a really thin area (the shore lines, smaller islands, and shallow waters), because the idea is that a lot of the world (in general) isn’t for them. They share the space with things that had established there before them (and don’t want much to do with them), and since most of those lines are respected you can kind of extrapolate that to encompass the entire globe, with a lot of niche populations flourishing in their own areas, but not looking to expand outwards in any major ways.
An idea lurking around the edge of the story is that it takes place in a world where industrialization just never really… caught on. There’s some evidence in earlier pages or there being something larger out there (Eth gives Töby’s mums some canned salmon with a printed label, and they talk about missing a sea plane delivery) but none of that is really a big part of anyone’s life, and it’s all considered kind of old and… not that big a deal.
The way society is mapped out, then, is probably/definitely unsustainable, but I kind of like that. The idea that Eth’s Skin takes place in a comfortable “sunset” phase of human/sapient society, and while “the end” of things is still a long, long ways away, there never will be enormous global population booms and mass concentrations of people like we have here in the non-Eth’s Skin world.
(Though to be fair, the places where Eth’s Skin take place are currently super devoid of big built-up society, so you could still have these little mossy turnips wandering around on a beach up in Northern BC somewhere totally oblivious to a city like Vancouver existing (unlikely, though).)
